Most of my Porsches have been weekend cars, expect a few that I used a DD.

Running the A/C some then turning off the compressor and letting the cabin fan continue to run and dry the evaporator is a good idea.

my allstate policy allows me to keep my porsche in suspension with full coverage at measly $15/month cost - if i want to use the car, i just send an email and they bill me for each week of use which is usually $20 per week.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'll buy it, I'm on the hunt for a C4S, there, problem solved.
I rarely drive my 03 c4s. Due to work circumstances and kids, it pretty much sits in my garage without activity months at a time. I've thought about selling, but I can't get myself to be without a Porsche. Having said that, what preventive measures should I take. I try start the car every 2-3 weeks and let it get up to operating temperature. Any other watch outs?
About all you can do is what you are doing. Starting and letting the engine idle is better than not running the engine at all. At least the seals/gaskets and what have you get splashed with oil which helps keep them from shrinking.
Be sure you have the brake/clutch fluid flushed/bled on time (every 2 years).
Running the A/C some then turning off the compressor and letting the cabin fan continue to run and dry the evaporator is a good idea.
Be sure you take steps to prevent rodents making a home in the car. Clear away stuff on the floor and if you can set out traps.
Also, consider scheduling some "me" time and taking the car out for a nice drive once in a while. You don't have to cover hundreds of miles. A nice drive that gets everything up to temp and lets you enjoy the car is good enough. Well, better than nothing.
Have some of your friends drive it? Hire a company to drive it for you?
Not kidding about hiring a company, there are companies that do just that. Apparently there are a lot of sports/exotic owners who never drive them, so they come over and drive them for you.
If you were in Phoenix, I would gladly beat the hell out of your car weekly.
The other problem is the house I bought 2 years a ago has a steep drive way. I had to build a small ramp to get the car (yes the car is lowered) to clear the drive way. My 535 clears it just fine, but the Porsche doesn't. So in order to drive the Porsche, I have to pull this ramp out, pull the car out, then put the ramp back in the garage. Same process to to pull the car in...
I hate all the work involved to pull the car out, so I don't end up driving it.
I know this sounds ridiculous, but the alternate is to raise my car to stock height or redo the drive way...
Don't worry about it. Your using the car as it was intended. I was in the same situation as you and just enjoyed doing PM instead of driving it. Had planned on saving mine and passing down to our son but decided to sell it because the PM costs became absurd.
You know I'm having a hard time building much sympathy for you.
If getting the ramps out -- I bet there's a way to fix that steep driveway with some wooden ramps that are bolted to the drive -- or putting the car back to its proper ride height -- why do you car if the car is lowered if you never drive it anyhow? -- is too much a road block to drive the car I'd offer the opinion you really should just sell the car.
Really that's lots better than idling the engine every so often or letting the car sit unused for lengths of time.
I can't believe it is necessary to tell someone to drive their Porsche.
When I bought my house (before owning the 996), the slope of the driveway was bad and my previously owned BMW would scrape on its way into the garage. Well, know and behold, redoing the drivway was the 2nd major job I did after buying the house.
I wasn't asking for sympathy. The intention of my post was to ensure I was storing my car properly, nothing more nothing less.
I lowered the car prior to buying buy my house. This car was my daily driver when I first bought it.
Well since no one else is blatantly saying it I will.
Staring your car and just letting it idle is bad for your car.
You really should take her out and drive her. Letting her idle is not good.
There I said it.
If you're not going to use it then sell it. Buy another when the circumstances are right. I know it's hard (I do) but if the car's just sitting there and it's too much of an inconvenience or hassle to take it out then don't waste your time worrying about it. It doesn't matter what anyone says else says or thinks about your driveway or whatever your reason is for not taking it out...whether it's the worst or the best reason....at the end of the day it's your reason. And, we've all been there. Sometimes life gets so crazy that doing the most basic things are just too much of a hassle. When life gets to that point, get rid of the distractions that are giving you unnecessary heartache...like the car that's sitting in the garage and going nowhere.
My $.02,

Agree. I'm surprised people still have this notion about stored cars. Drive it and get it hot or keep it properly stored. Prolonged idling is not good for any car, Porsche or Toyota.
I'll buy it, I'm on the hunt for a C4S, there, problem solved. Or, keep it on a charger and drive it once a month, up to temp, get all systems a bit of exercise. Seriously though, I'm having one PPI'd on Tuesday and if that falls through, or if your car is much nicer and well priced, let me know and you'll feel good knowing it went to a good home where it will be driven regularly and tracked occasionally. You'll feel much better.
Totally disagree.
Starting and driving it long enough to bring it up to operating temperature is the best. If all a person does is let it idle for 10-30 min then they may as well not start it up.
I think it's great advice! I bought my first Porsche in my early 20s when I started to work professionally. Most of my Porsches have been weekend cars, expect a few that I used a DD. Every time I thought of being rational and sold a car, I found my self buying another Porsche within a few months.
As weird as it sounds, I get satisfaction just knowing I have one in the garage, even tough I don't drive it as much as I would like.
Did you know letting a car idle or sit there and warm up before use is " Verbotten" in Germany. Not good for the car at all. But I digress, this is not Germany, lol. Just my 02.
Sell.
Wait awhile.
Buy another one later.
We've all had intervals during which Porsche ownership or use was inconvenient: Whether finances, or location, or family needs, or...whatever. If this, and ONLY this Porsche is the love of your automotive life, have it packed away by someone who knows what they're doing, and unwrap it again in 2-3 years. Or, just park it at the office. People do that.
If in contrast it is one in a series, then: sell, and then either buy the same thing in a few years at lower cost, or move up to the next generation (which will also be less costly, by then).
I have the exact same model & year. I
had
an '02 C4S, which I traded away for an S600: Easier to fit two adults, two kids, etc. Couldn't justify the extra vehicle.
Eventually the time came when I could return to the fold, and justify an extra vehicle. Miss the old one?
Yes. Enjoy the slightly newer and better current one? Yes.
We enjoy our automobiles. But they're like streetcars and gas stations: Another one will come along.
Enjoy the extra garage space and spare cash.
Meh...
If a person has the car already, and can afford it, AND has a place to put it, then no harm in keeping it. They would then be no different than the many, many, collectors of anything.
I'd just make a point of driving it once every other month or so long enough to get the temp up, and then hard enough to burn off any moisture in the exhaust system or any buildup of gunk in the head/cylinders.
Just kidding - I can tell. Both.
OP, rip out your driveway apron and pour a new one correctly sloped so your car can come and go without scraping.
You can also address this issue with suspension changes. Not all airbag / hydraulic suspensions go into ridiculous low-riders...

Insurance cost is another factor to consider. If you start getting too many vehicles to the point that one or more are rarely used. It gets hard to justify the extra cost for insurance. I would think most people would keep full coverage on their Porsche, even if its mostly garaged. This was one of the reasons I sold mine. @2000 miles per year with full coverage insurance just doesn't make financial sense for most people. I couldn't find a policy that discounted for that kind of use.
if you have many policies insured with allstate, they are very kind when it comes to auto insurance - we have several rental properties, personal umbrella, a boat and 5 cars.

I think mine drops down to $30 a month or something when I'm not using it - although it would be a bit more per week. This is regular coverage for a mid 30's driver who lives in a not so great part of town.
But yeah, it's pretty easy to get it in and out of the storage cost.
Every time you write
Allstate
the voice in my head automatically drops a few octaves. Am I the only one suffering from this when reading your post? lol
-Eric
I vote for pulling the car out of the garage, getting a head of steam, and jumping it Dukes of Hazard-style out onto the street. You already built a ramp, just turn it around and let'r rip.
