Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Reverse lights and parking sensors were not working so I replaced the switch on the side of the gear lever, part number 996 613 212 10. After replacing the switch, when I reconnect the battery I get a selector lever not engaged message and the car will not start. I can move through the gears and the display indicates the correct gear, but it doesnt go into park. The transmission worked fine before I replaced this switch. Is the switch faulty or do I need to do a reset of some kind? I removed the switch while in neutral with battery disconnected.

POST 2Original post

Are you positive you reinstalled everything correctly?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I forgot to remove the pin in the switch, so I had to remove the center console again to remove the pin. I had tried to start the car with the pin still installed. I moved the gear level back to neutral and disconnected the battery when I removed the center console to get to the switch pin. With the pin installed and you move the gear lever does that damage the switch? I was going to try installing the old one to see if that makes a difference, that could tell me that I ruined the switch. It is a Tiptronic transmission.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I picked up a new switch, part number 996 613 212 10, and followed the instructions of having the car in neutral, etc. and now the car recognizes the gear selected. Best of all, my reverse lights and parking assist both work now, which was the whole point of this exercise. Nice to get everything put back together.

POST 6Original post

Good evening everyone, My name is Sbastien, I'm 45 years old and I live in France. I own a 2004 996 4S convertible with Tiptronic. I get the error message "Selector lever not engaged" in the on-board computer when I'm driving and I flick the lever forward. After this message, I simply push the lever back and the error message disappears. What part could be the cause? Thank you for your help.
