I have inspected this car twice now and the only signs of a possible reoccurance of the RMS problem is a ever so slight bit of oil on a small plug just aft of the transmission in the very center of where the trans and engine meet.

Wouldn't Porsche just use their existing resources/tooling/product to leverage for the motor.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After over 18 months of looking at several 911 coupes, I have finally found the car that nearly meets all of my specifications....with one maybe big exception. The car in question, is a 2002 911 coupe with no frills. The options are: Factory sport suspension, PSE, and PSM. This car was leased from a Porsche dealer who evidently used it as a personal car for one of the dealerships family members up until 9700 miles. It now has 26k miles on it. The color is what I am looking for and the price is right. The exception, or problem is that when I called the dealer that the vehicle was leased from, they told me that a RMS was replaced at 9,600 miles just prior to it being leased in April of 2003. I have inspected this car twice now and the only signs of a possible reoccurance of the RMS problem is a ever so slight bit of oil on a small plug just aft of the transmission in the very center of where the trans and engine meet. No signs of oil on the ground. The warranty on this vehicle is up in December of 2005. My question is, should I run as far away from this vehicle as possible, or bite the bullet and take my chances on more RMS issues in the future and/or engine replacement out of warranty? HELP!!!

POST 2Original post

Keep looking! Right now it is a buyers market for 996s. With warranty up in a few months and known issues I would continue looking. The only way I would buy a used car is with a warranty. My 2 cents.

POST 3Original post

I say, buy the car, splurge $1500 on a powertrain warranty and enjoy. The more I learn about 996s the more I realize that if RMS leak has not occured yet, it will at some point...

POST 4Original post

Can you get it as a CPO? If so, then pull the trigger. But, by no means is it the only one you will find, as most will say, if you are in the market for a 996 your choices are a plenty.

POST 5Original post

I am in the market for a 996 as well and the effects of the RMS issue has me concerned. I plan on using the car for week-end and time trial track-days. Will put a cage, race seat and strip the interior as much as possible but still keep it street legal. No engine mods. No suspension mods (other than factory sport suspension). Will Porsche void any extended warranty as soon as they see the cage? I guess this is probably the dealer's choice. (Anyone know a track friendly dealer in Southern California?) I'm not too worried about the RMS itself as long as the extended warranty can cover any catastrophic engine failure. At this point, RMS, if it is to come up, is another maintenance item. Unless... it causes engine failure (thats what the extended warranty is for). I see people posting that the GT3 is immune from RMS issues? Is it really? Why would it be? Wouldn't Porsche just use their existing resources/tooling/product to leverage for the motor. Afterall, its inline with Porsche's 'platformization' plan. One can get a 996 + time trial prep and have enough left over for 5 engine swaps for the price of a GT3.

POST 6Original post

RMS in the GT3 has been posted over on the GT3/2 forum. Rare, but does happen. As for your cage being the reason they deny warranty, they can't unless of course the cage damaged something you want warrantied.

POST 7Original post

Don't be so sure. If they say that the car was on a racetrack and raced, then they can deny the warrantee.

POST 8Original post

Racing is one thing, participating in a DE is different. The local dealer hear sponsors our local PCA chapter, promotes DE events, hell even comes out to sell merchandise. But unless they can prove that you did what you are claiming for warranty b/c of racing, etc, then they can't deny the claim. Heck, you do worse on the city roads not racing and just acting like a jackass.

POST 9Original post

The GT3 is NOT immune from RMS--there have been a few on Rennlist so far. The Turbos and GT3s seem to suffer much less from the problem than the regular Carreras as they have different engine blocks if I recall correctly, but they are certainly not immune from the problem. By the way, basdass 968...I have been looking into getting one to share daily driver duty with my 993, but prices are all over the map...
