I just changed the oil on my car to Mobil1 5w50 again and before I drained the oil the engine looked like there were various leaks and the spin on oil filter was loose and it spewed oil out of the edges.

Hello, I left my car with my sister for a few months. She took the car to a friend and got an oil change and drove it nearly 4K miles. Her friend put valvoline 10w30 synthetic in it. Wrong oil. I just changed the oil on my car to Mobil1 5w50 again and before I drained the oil the engine looked like there were various leaks and the spin on oil filter was loose and it spewed oil out of the edges. Despite this the car runs perfectly fine and still had enough oil in it. Could using a lower viscosity 10w30 make the engine leak? What potential damage could have happened? thanks for the help.

Hmmmm... Bummer! I'd think you're not very happy with your sister or her friend Is the Valvoline a Porsche Approved oil? Why would they use that? Was it recommended by someone? At this point, it's water under the bridge...but I wouldn't think (pure speculation as I'm no oil expert) a 10w 30 would damage anything seeing as 0w30 was the original spec. - then again who knows with these engines. As for "causing leaks" - maybe if it has more detergents in it? I would think that the way the car was driven would have a greater effect than the oil itself... I hope you get it figured out

I would run it for a while on the Mobil1 5w50 and see if the leaks continue. Be sure to check around the spin-on. Based on "just changed the oil on my car to Mobil1 5w50 again" you used Mobile1 5w50 previously. It may the detergent package in the Valvoline synthetic promoted the leaks, so once you're back to Mobile1, watch to see if the leaks diminish or stop. Then clean it up and drive it.
