Unsuccessful attempt
In a factory installed system with sound canceling technology and multiple mics mounted in just the right places the audio quality is just acceptable fidelity but still not like being in a quiet room on a quality speaker phone (IMO).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. So far I've just been throwing it in the door pocket (I'm still not used to having an actual glove box!).
Hi Guys... new owner of a '04 996 here..
just wondering how you guys mount your phones... do you put it in that storage bin or do you have mounts for it... if you do, let's see it
In my pocket, can't use it when driving anyway and with a manual I can't really get all that distracted.
It fits in the cup holder if I need it for navigation. I don't usually charge phones in cars.
Cubby for me. As a comparison, I am currently driving a 2015 Cayman S for the week and there is no place to put a phone but, it does have ventilated seats and that makes up for everything.
+1 My phone goes in the door or glove box. I'm to busy enjoying enjoy drive. Everybody that knows me, when I do call back later, they ask "How's the Porsche?" lol.
There's no way you're driving that thing aggressively enough, grandma. One turn, and my phone would be flying around the car...
To answer the OP's question, I keep it in my pocket - I'll see how the cubby works when I get it installed.
I usually wedge mine in the seam of the passenger seat. Othewise, between my legs on the driver's seat.
I've had a vasectomy - not worried about sperm count...
I have a "cubby" just below my cassette storage unit
It holds the charger when not plugged in, and the phone and usb charging wire while I'm driving. I don't check the phone until I reach my destination or a safe place to pull over and check messages.
No way I am bending over or dropping the soap in front of shim. When I had the iPhone 5 I put it in the drink holder but it is too small for my iPhone 6. I put my XM in the cubby so I will probably order a cubby to replace the CD box.
I put it in the lower cubby. It's close enough that I can hear the GPS if needed, and just out of reach of the gear shifter to ignore it if I see who is calling.
I got one of the Scosche magnet setups for about $30. Stuck the holder part up high on my dash and everything I get in the car I just put my phone there, works like a charm. I also swapped out my original Becker radio for a new Kenwood receiver so now I can use my phone via Bluetooth for phone, GPS, etc...
Ditto:
I do the same thing; however, I was happy to see this thread because I have been keeping my eyes open for a device that I can secure my phone when I am driving. I listen to Pandora so it has to be close to me
Why do you still have the CD and/or Cassette storage thingy? Worthless waste of space. Get a replacement second cubby and swap it out in 30 seconds. Worth the time investment...
^This^
Yup, I've actually still got some decent cassettes hanging around so why not? between them and 6 CD's I don't have to change them out any more than every few months or so...And God forbid I should listen to terrestrial radio!
I find that cassette holder to be 100% useless. None of my 8-Tracks fit in it.
'Nuther vote for cubby. I use I-Heart-Radio all the time, so need the phone handy.
.
I use an iOttie One Touch cell phone holder. The cell phone is docked and removed with one hand making it very fast and convenient. I have it in the windshield. My hands do not get in the way when driving aggressively, yet it's close enough to reach the keypad with an extended finger without removing hands from the wheel. It is infinitely adjustable. Very nice phone holder. We have them in all our cars.
it grips my iPhone 6+ like crazy. has never slid off. The trick is you must keep the surface clean
Ha ha Yeh, I didn't notice the song but its a thumper.. My bet is it's not the typical you'd expect of a Porsche, but neither am I...
mate there is no way your fitting through there! lol
I'm a cubby hole man
at least until I upgrade to something stereo wise that has Bluetooth / mirroring and all that good stuff
Not to hijack the thread but don't waste your money on Bluetooth if your looking for a quality hands-free talking on the phone experience . I already went down that path. The car is just too noisy for the person on the other end to hear you clearly with good fidelity unless the car is completely sealed up and you're not going very fast...
Yep, I have a BT phone system too... use it all the time. I had the microphone installed right in front of the steering wheel. When it was off to the side, it didn't work well.
Have you ever actually heard what you sound like on the other end? Guess it really depends on how you define quality (My bench mark is when the person on the other end can't tell the difference)...
Without sound canceling technology in close proximity, at best you sound like you're on a plane. In a factory installed system with sound canceling technology and multiple mics mounted in just the right places the audio quality is just acceptable fidelity but still not like being in a quiet room on a quality speaker phone (IMO).
Aftermarket car stereo systems (all except the very latest) do not use sound canceling technology so even with the most directional mic with a wind filter is still not going to sound great (even in a fairly quiet car)...
So unless you've got the absolute latest car audio system with multiple mics, I don't think anyone is going to "want" to have a conferance call with you while in a moving 996...
I haven't had any complaints about my Bluetooth sound. If I did get a complaint I could always use the old fashioned earphones w/mic that you get with every iPhone. Either way from a safety and convenience standpoint, Bluetooth is a must have. Shifting gears while trying to talk on a phone is no fun.
I agree. The amount I have to raise my voice to be heard over the sound of the motor is very frustrating. More than quick conversations can leave me pretty hoarse.
I don't know about you fools, but my 996 is going to be classic very soon and I'm keeping the cassette cases.
Missed out dawg! I'll check it out though! I could still get creative but I'm on my 3rd beer.
Damn!
The part I find amusing is that you probably had to come up with a 2nd phone to take pictures of the other one in all its various storage locations.
WHERE DO YOU KEEP YOUR 2ND PHONE?
Was out of town for two days. Glad to see that this most important of threads is still at the top.
Where do you guys all put your sunglasses? Or should that be a separate thread?
I offered to take one when we pick the car up. I'm not quite sure what the look I got meant, but I've felt the need to be wearing warmer clothes today...
I don't know if I can commit to that. I'm still waiting ok Rubik's missing picture to make up my mind. I also want to know where he keeps his second phone that he used to take the pictures of the first.
Dude, I have like 16 phones, so I know a thing or two about where to stash the phone. But I still like cerex' idea the best. I checked with Pelican and they did not have one of those phone holders.
You've got a MkII so you should have cup holders that help you to avoid that happening. LEO tends to frown on open containers too so you might want to watch that...
This is what this really means:
Philia (/ˈfɪljə/ or /ˈfɪliə/; Ancient Greek: φιλία), often translated "brotherly love", is one of the four ancient Greek words for love: philia, storge, agape and eros. In Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, philia is usually translated as "friendship" or affection.[1] The complete opposite is called a phobia.
God damn it lost my phone in the car today 3rd time!
If only I had chosen then special place, this wouldn't have happened.
Now I have to go call myself. Again!
Rubik trolled me into an incredibly dull thread so I think it's time to bring back his favorite thread for a bit more discussion.
Since Mr Rubik is thinking of selling his 996, maybe he can enlighten us as to how phone storage will weigh into the consideration of a replacement car.
Damn!!!
I just took my cupholder apart to clean behind it and found some epoxy there. I'm a bit concerned on this repair and thinking of trading my car in. What do you guys think?
IMG_2406_zps11d4053f.jpg
In the mean time, I'm very afraid to use it so using this temp solution for the time being.
That looks like a total loss to me. Probably doesn't even have a salvage value.
You might try calling F6I tomorrow though. I hear they were involved in the development Cupholder Solution so I'm sure they'll be interested in buying your dead cupholder for further study.
This thread started on July 20 and I can't believe that F6I has not responded to this thread and proposed $900 phone holder gizmos, like the $900 cup holders in the 918 spyders.
mann: please, please close this thread. (This makes me miss John Ireland.)
Haven't you heard? Jake doesn't give a damn about potential customers
And if you think closing this thread will help you, I've got a "New Thread" button with your name on it
while on this thread..thought to ask a question.
Does our car accept the connection to the cell to allow Pandora operate?
tried mine the other nite and used AUX..but no worky!
any suggestions...or is it similar to programming for a garage door......
PITA?
fred z
Never thought of that. If that's the case, you can kill two birds with one stone as you can use the available space in the shoe as a cup holder.
Maybe we should link them to this post for someone that starts a "Where do you put your phone AND drink?" thread.
I was wondering how we went a whole 15 hours without hearing your screams of rage at the resurrection of your favorite thread
I didn't even have anything to do with it this time
I think that's the one place I didn't take a picture of: At the caliper in place of a brake pad.
Why would someone even imagine to use a phone as a brake pad?
Sara just got this cell phone holder a few days ago for the Cayman. It plugs into the CD slot. Happy with it so far. I'll prolly order one for the 996. About $10 on FleaBay (the holder, not the 996. That's almost $15).
It took about 80 years after invention of the automobile for the manufacturers to realize that most people wanted cup holders designed into the vehicles. At that rate, we should be getting integrated phone holders by about 2095.
Just really a shame to let this thread fall off the first page.
Cuda - That's a new phone holder that I haven't seen before. Given that CD's have gone the way of the 8-track and cassette, very clever.
I've got a double DIN aftermarket stereo in the new car with the CD/DVD slot behind the screen, so that won't work for me. So far I've just been throwing it in the door pocket (I'm still not used to having an actual glove box!). I need to get rid of the CD holder and replace it with a cubby, but my giant Samsung Mega cell phone didn't fit in the cubby on my '99.
I have got something similar - a mountek... link here:
http://www.mountek.com/
But I don't think it fits well with our radio.. at least on my CDR23 it doesn't .. all the buttons below the CD slot are blocked and it's a bit flimpsy... mind you this mountek worked well on my other cars.
Hey, whilst being ignored by DT yesterday at Home Depot, I found this cell phone mount in there.
Expensive ($40) but I think it's just what I needed.
You stick this little metal disk on the back of your phone. Then, the base with a powerful magnetic ball easily clips to a vent vane. Then, just pop the phone on! Easy to transport from one car to another.
.
Mike great find.
I used to not like this thread, but I'm growing quite fond of it now; it's a sign of camaraderie for me although I am not a 996 owner anymore.
But, what is it with that flower? All this time with the Boxter, Miata, and hairdresser jokes and now you are showing hints of your hidden side we don't know. What is up with that?
Mike, I know it's easy to confuse a 911 and a Beetle from the outside if you squint real hard, but I feel you should know better than that.
So WTF is with the flower in the dash?!?
Ha! My youngest daughter put it there. She was wearing a flower hairband one day, and this fell off of it, so she stuck it there. I keep it there as a constant reminder of her. She lives with her mom, but not far away.
Damn it. I just realized that you still owed us some location pics and now that you sold your car out from under your poor son's nose, you'll never be able to deliver.
I tell you what: You guys help me with a get rich quick scheme where I have a disposable $20K sitting around and I promise to get you pictures from all 996 places imaginable.
On a (somewhat ) serious note, over the weekend I bought a external hard drive carrying case that I stuff between the e-brake handle and console or the console and seat bolster. I leave the end unzipped and use it as a sleeve to hold my phone. The bottom of the phone sticks out so the charger can plug in - it's a Samsung Mega, so a really big phone (but I don't use a case for it - so the same size as a regular sissy-sized smartphone with an Otterbox, only much thinner). Anyhow, the working theory is kind of like a rifle holster that the cowboys like John Wayne used to have strapped to their saddles back in the Wild West.
And for the trip to Memphis in the soccer mom mobile last night, I just used one of the multitude of cubbies. I think it was the tampon holder (you know, like the ones they built into the Miatas and Boxste`s).
Was just teasing her today that the only reason they still publish telephone books is so that she can stack up three of them on the seat so she can see over the dash.
I could probably modify my design for my 3D printed phone holder that fits in the Ashtray of the 964 to work with the cubby in the 996.

I don't believe in distracted driving, so I have always put it somewhere out of reach. I put it in the front trunk area. In fact, I like to pretend that it is an offering to a monster that protects my car when I am away.
A Frunkenstein, if you will.
Having followed this thread with interest, I would note the preferred option as lovely has she is has one flaw - Iphone screens can't be read covered in baby oil! making extraction pointless from the holder..
As a mk 1 owner I leave my android phone out of site (as you would with an android) and have it forward calls to the un modified PCM1 which has the built in phone card capability. All works great leaving me free to drive the car.. And keep an eye out for phone holders.

Update: Got back from a short spring break vacation yesterday to find my center console cubby that I ordered before leaving waiting for me on the front porch. After a grueling, tortuous install session removing the old CD holder and replacing it with the new cubby, I now have a proper place to hold my phone. Phew!

Just read the TT link. Wow! Like ice cream brain freeze. Painful. Think I'll stay here. Much more fun.
"Turbros"...funny...that's supposed to be funny...right?
First off... using proper forum etiquette I did read this entire thread. There is one suggestion I did not see posted and, accidentally using this method myself, I felt compelled to share. My solution is a tad complicated so please follow along.
This works for 2004 996 with carpeted floor mats.
1) Open cup holder.
2) Place phone in cup holder (I sport an iPhone 6 with thin case).
3) Drive
4) Allow phone to fall through cup holder and into passenger foot-well.
5) Brake hard while approaching stop light. The goal here is really get the phone slid as far up the passenger foot-well as possible.
6) Accelerate like you're in a drag race from light in step 5. The goal here is to slide/lodge the phone under the passenger seat.
Once the phone is under the passenger seat it will stay there. For whatever reason, anything that gets underneath that seat can only be removed while on your knees next to the passenger door and bending inward at 90 degrees putting your head level with the seat cushion then reaching under the seat to retrieve secure items. Small hands recommended.
If you can get the phone to fall screen up that's better otherwise all the sliding may scratch the screen. I know the door pocket seems easier at first but trust me when I say the phone is very secure under the seat and there is no risk of distraction from it while under there because you simply won't be able to get to it until you pull over and kneel down in a strange parking lot with everyone looking at you like your nuts.
I'm considering swapping the CD holder for the tray but the above is a no cost option and, again, is way more secure. That bloody phone was _not_ coming out from under the seat no matter how I drove. Good luck with this method. It may take practice but I was lucky enough to get it right on the first (accidental) try.
Nice ip!
I'm sure if you tried hard enough you could have gotten it to slide under the carpet which would have made for extra fun while looking crazy in a strange parking lot
I put my iPhone 6s Plus in the lower cubby because I have a alpine ilx-007 head unit which itilizes CarPlay. It doesn't fit in the cubby though. Looking for other clean looking options.

You moron, there is no such thing as a $2 million bill.
And I've heard those carbon ceramic breaks aren't affordable AT ALL. I think they cost like five hunderd dollars or something. And that doesn't even cover the cost of the calibers.
Okay, here's one I haven't seen. With an iPhone 6, I (embarrassingly) have cassette holders in the upper console and a cubby below that. I open the lower tape holder and put my phone sideways behind the the little pins that keep the tapes from unwinding. I then push down a little and tuck the top edge just under the radio preset buttons. Works great for using Waze on the daily commute.
OK, wanted to post an important update.
Ron Burgundy URGENT NEWS BULLETIN - YouTube
I did the CD holder delete cubby conversion last month (man, that was a huge pain the ***, had to remove the entire dash to get that baby out). My unnaturally large, 3 year old Samsung Mega would then fit in the cubby, but barely and without any type of protective sheathing. I was happy.
Then, two weeks ago, my first grade daughter ate my phone. Well, technically, she just bit it, but absolutely shattered the screen. So, I had to get a new phone. Since they don't make big-*** phones like the Mega anymore, I had to settle for an S7 Edge.
Because it is smaller, it fits much better in the cubby. Even with the phone case that I put on it. I bought the phone case on ebay. It was like half price of the same one in the Sprint store.
That is all. Please resume your normal activities.
She sounds vicious, or really hungry. Make sure you watch your fingers.
My phone fits in the cupholder pretty well, and if I get the charger plugged in just right, it might not fall out.
Wow, you carried a Galaxy Mega for
three
years? That's commitment. S7e must feel like a pretty substantial upgrade.
Until I get around to putting a CarPlay receiver in, I've resorted to just tossing my phone on the passenger seat. When I have passengers sitting in that seat, it's their duty to hold onto it. Also, I need to find a computer with a CD drive in it so that I can burn some new ones, this whole cassette + 6 disc changer setup is hilariously late 90s.
I just tried a similar vent clip in the center clips and the weight of the phone tilted the vent and screen down so it was difficult to see. I use Waze for navigation.
Do you actually use the kenu or were you just suggesting it? Do you use it in the center vents? How do you keep it from tilting down?
I REALLY want to like the proclips product but the universal magnetic mount is SO ugly.
I have an iPhone 6+, my husband has an iPhone 6. We need to have one solution that will fit both.
The bright red plastic ring on the universal mount is heinous. I don't want that in my car.
I use one of these, on the side vent above the headlight switch. Does the job. Wire from the iSimple adapter thingy snakes through the instruction manual bracket so you hardly see it in less you're using it.
How in God's name do you guys create a 17 page thread from this?!!
My 0.02c worth: my Huawei Mate 9 with Spigen case chose the car for me as it fits absolutely perfectly in the cubby under the CD holder unit.
I rejected all manner of Lamborghinis, Ferraris, and late model Porsches on my search for the perfect phone slot.
Amazing how 14 years ago Porsche predicted the Huawei/Spigen combo and built the car to fit....
And I'm guessing this may be a hint of how such a simple thread title builds 17 pages! Idiots!
I fabricated a metal angle bracket that slides between CD Drawer and bottom of dash. I then split some vac line and glued it around the part of bracket that slides in to keep it secure. I applied a magnet onto the down leg (as seen on photo) so the back of phone just sticks in place. This bracket easily slides out for CD access.
The charger cable is plugged into a cig adapter that is part of the FM Modulator and Bluetooth (had to add this since I had the Most system) that is behind the cd drawer where I used the phone wiring for my power, see toggle switch and Bluetooth adapter to left of center console mounted to lower side of dash. I can now use my phone for GPS, Pandora and making and receiving calls without handling the phone.
It says 17/17 at the bottom on my phone. But I do the 9 box out to the right also now.
Either way, crazy long thread about where people carry their phones. Lolol
Silly thread, but i'll play...
I have Apple Carplay in my 996TT, so the phone is usually plugged in. I took an old CD holder, removed the inner CD portion, attached a piece of aluminum L, hot-glued some high strength neodymium magnets on the L bracket, and put a piece of hobby shop leather over the front. Like many of my projects, first one was a prototype, but worked well enough that never felt a need for V2. Color difference between factory leather and plastic is much less when not being lit up by a phone flash, looks very close.
Phone now just magnetically sticks, holds tight, typically runs Waze while the carplay unit is streaming apple music.
The last time I looked for a place to keep my iDevice in my previous 996, I made things a bit more complicated.... Of course this was before CarPlay, so I simplified on my later installation.
I use a PanaVise custom in-dash mount:
http://panavise.com/pdf_indash/75132-198.
Then I put a Scosche magnetic mount (
Amazon
Amazon
) on the PanaVise using the 2 sided tape. Then I carefully drilled 4 holes through the Scosche mounting plate in line with the holes on the PanaVise. Inserted and tightened 4 screws and nuts with a bit of thread locker. The steel plate from the Scosche goes between the back of the phone and the phone case.
Rock solid...
In all seriousness, Waze is the best radar detector...and the only one that is legal in my jurisdiction. So mounting a phone where I can see it is of vital importance.
My mount can be seen here. Just pan left, zoom and
Enhance.
You just don’t know when...so be ready!
Could we please stop focusing on minutiae like car phone holders and get to what’s really important...OIL! I’ve found my Kenu holds 1 bottle in a very useful place. For those of you wondering, yes, only the back of the bottle is carbon-wrapped. I didn’t want my spare oil reservoir looking
too
ostentatious. Should I paint the bottle to match exterior?
Just ordered Kenu wireless charging vent-mounted phone holder. Main attraction is the wireless charging with no cable fiddling. Doubt I will like the vent mount aspect, and expecting I will either return it, or MacGyver it to something based further down and to the right of the center console area.
https://www.kenu.com/products/airframe-wireless
[UPDATE: now just getting click-happy on Amazon. Found this one which I ordered as well. Something's going back!]
The factory bat-phone! Very nice. In the meantime I will enjoy my car that was ordered with zero options - so I dont have any nice once or even naughty ones.
Daryll
I keep mine on the passenger seat and if I have a passenger I keep it in the center cubby.
I'm blown away that as late as 2002, there were people who thought a hardwired car phone was a good idea.
The great thing about the hard wired phones was the range.. In rural areas they stomped any handheld,, they were 2 watts out not 200mw....
Heck my old motorola digital brick seemed like you could reach mars compared to my Iphone..
Hi everyone
I'm reactivating this thread b/c I'm very interested in this factory setup; more precisely the console trim part of it.
I find the larger side trim very useful for mounting any type of phone holder, hiding a BT module inside, accessing charging cable thru the side port & even fitting Aux & USB ports nicely..
this is a project I'm planning for the car &
I'll be grateful if someone could help with providing part#s for this console setup in Savannah Beige.
sharing any similar projects is also highly appreciated..
