I removed the MAF and the throttle body, cleaned both very carefully, cleared the codes, and started it up.
Leading evidence: 'Clean very carefully, cleared the codes, and started it up' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fuel filter)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check codes w/ obdii scanner' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. They also found an electrical problem for me and fixed it, charge was one dollar for a fuse that they installed after pulling my seat up to look at something.

It ran perfectly, better response than before likely due to the MAF cleaning.

Suspected cause
The poor engine running could be a fuel pump (or less likely a fuel filter).

Suspected cause
The whine is probably the secondary air injection pump that runs upon a cold start.

Suggestion
Do not try to restart the car again, check for oil leaks on the floor of the garage, if the engine sound like a coffee grinder when you restarted, cross your finger is not the infamous IMS.

(While you report you change the oil regularly some owners believe that is all the servicing these cars need and while regular oil/filter service is very important it is not the only important service these cars require and should receive.)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I would like to introduce myself with this very first post before getting into the problem I'm having. My name is Rachel, I live in Las Vegas and I've been a Porsche owner for the last twenty years. I currently own a 2015 Cayenne Turbo S and my very much loved 2002 Porsche 911 that I purchased brand new. Now my problem...My 911 has 108,000 miles on it. It's an automatic transmission. I change the oil regularly and have never had any problems with the car until a few days ago. I was driving along and noticed that the car had no acceleration. The car still would go 50 mph but with zero pickup. I tried using the tiptronic and the car still had no acceleration as I went through the gears. I drove it home, put it in the garage, turned it off and than restarted it. The car sounded very very rough so I turned it off and it's been sitting since. I did notice a slight whine from the engine when I was warming it up but nothing after that during the day. I'm really hoping it's just a sensor or a hose that's loose or something simple but being a Porsche I thought I would get some opinions from some of the experts on this board before bring it in for service. I would hate to get ripped off. Thank you very much in advance for any help.
Do not try to restart the car again, check for oil leaks on the floor of the garage, if the engine sound like a coffee grinder when you restarted, cross your finger is not the infamous IMS.
No oil leaks and definitely not the IMS. It didn't sound like a coffee grinder more like when something is obstructing the exhaust. (nothing is obstructing the exhaust). Thanks for the response though.
It could very we'll be your mass air flow sensor; which is a fairly common issue. My car exhibited similar issues when the MAF sensor went out: loss of power, rough idle, etc.
I was thinking the same thing after reading about something similar on the Pelican parts website. Is that an easily replaced part or something I should have the dealer take care of? Of course we're just guessing at this point but is there a test or something we can do to see if it is in fact the MAF sensor?
Many possibilities. And the best solution is to have a knowledgable mechanic do the diagnosing. Dealers are more expensive than idies because they have many more costs before they break even. If you haven't developed a relationship with a mechanic that you can trust then now is the time to do so.
There is a 996 expert that owns a clean modern shop here in town. The shops name is TROPHY PERFORMANCE and the owner is Todd. They are honest and have good prices. I also live in Vegas, if you need help feel free to ask. Dave
I had a very similar problem with my '01 with Tiptronic.
Rough idle at times, no acceleration. Same symptoms that you've described.
I threw a code reader on the OBD port and it detected two fault codes that relate to the throttle body.
I removed the MAF and the throttle body, cleaned both very carefully, cleared the codes, and started it up.
It ran perfectly, better response than before likely due to the MAF cleaning. I really don't know which system was the problem (MAF or TB) since I cleaned both at the same time.
Can you drive it to a service shop in its current state (I couldn't with mine)?
If not you might try cleaning the MAF, or having someone do it if you don't care to. It is a 30 minute job for a beginner and maybe 10 minutes if you've done it before.
Or, have it flat bedded in to a shop for a look at the problem.
1) Mass Air Flow sensor. It is located on the air filter box with a wire harness going to it. You need a security torx bit to remove it. First clean it with MAF cleaner available from the auto parts store. Second option is just replace it. Is the CEL light on? The auto parts store can clear codes for you for free, after they tell you which code(s) are there.
2) Broken oil filler pipe. Check the oil filler pipe for breaks, especially in the accordion section. This can create a huge vacuum leak and make the car run very badly.
Banana in the tailpipe?
(OK, you all were thinking it - I'm just the first to say it
)
Oh, and welcome!
Finally, a Rennlister with a username that MIGHT elicit more ill will than my own.
Now, go spend $18 of that money left in the slot machines by little old ladies on a Rennlist membership! It's the best $18 you'll ever spend.
Another great Porsche shop in Las Vegas is Carl's place. My experience with trophy performance is that they are ridiculously over priced. Carls place is a shop of real Porsche enthusiasts and Porsche racers. They do awesome work. Gaudin is a scam artist with a $220 an hour labor charge!
Could be a number of things. Could be something internal in the engine and really serious. Could be something external to the engine and serious -- in that the car is undriveable -- but repairable without a lot of drama.
The whine is probably the secondary air injection pump that runs upon a cold start.

I like the converter that one poster mentioned. There is the AOS.
There are other possible explanations for the engine behavior as well.
My best advice is to find a shop that knows these cars inside and out and flat bed the car to the shop and describe the car's behavior and symptoms and let a professional Porsche tech make the diagnosis.
Just to be safe I have to emphasize avoid running the engine any.
Still trying to get past

Welcome and I also wonder if any lights are coming on in the dash or if you have any stored codes.
Based on your description, it could be any number of things at this point. Probably best to get it to a good Indy based on some suggestions here.
What service have you had done on your 108k mile 2002?
It is way past time for new spark plugs. If it happened to be raining when this happened you might have cracked coils, which is fairly common, they are often changed with the plugs.
Check for codes w/ OBDII scanner. Running rough plus not accelerating could be a plug, coil, or injector, MAF, lots of possibilities. Hopefully a stored or pending diagnostic code will point you in the right direction (MAF or misfire on specific cylinder(s))...
Trophy Performance does complete oil and filter changes for 100 dollars, that seems fair. They also found an electrical problem for me and fixed it, charge was one dollar for a fuse that they installed after pulling my seat up to look at something. I had a quote from them on the dreaded IMS before I sent it to Jake and they were more reasonable than many prices I have seen posted here since then. I really don't care if they are enthusiasts or a racers but I do care about their knowledge. The owner has been doing P cars including race cars for over 20 years. I don't know anything about Carls but I heard he is good also. I stick by my opinion of Trophy Performance and don't think they are " ridiculously over priced".
Thanks Dave! I'm having the car towed there on Friday. I work for the Wynn/Venetian so if you ever need a room, a meal or would like to see a show just let me know and I'll get it comped for you. I highly recommend Le Reve. It's my favorite.
I would like to thank everyone for replying to my post. I really appreciate it. I've decided to have it towed to a local shop and will post again when I have the diagnosis.
JD everyone has an opinion. When trophy quotes roughly $800 to purchase and install fister mufflers when my Indy in Reno did it for $400 I start to questio their pricing scale. They also quoted me I believe $2300 for the IMS replacement alone, give or take $100, and that is by no means a fair deal when gaudin did it for the same number. Simply sharing my experience where as Carl's place and Reno rennsport have been nothing but upfront, honest, and fair with everything I have had them do. My $.02
P.S. I wouldn't know their simple maintenance pricing, as I enjoy wrenching on my own 996 to the extent I am capable of. But $100 seems fair when I look at my own materials cost and time spent.
Thanks a million Rachel, I appreciate it and will take you up on the offer. I am sure you'll get good treatment there and I'd like to hear what you think. You have a great guy in the Wynn downstairs thats the service manager of the Ferrari dealership, his name is Rich and he would be good for you to know. They got great mechanics and also could work on your car if need be. If you do meet him tell him you met Dave. They know me because I ride the V8 powered motorcycle that they've detailed and the guy that used to own my Porsche also has a couple of Ferrari's so I went there with him sometimes. Do you get on this site often? Is this the best way to contact you again? Dave
Thats a great price to PURCHASE and INSTALL the Fisters as it seems from what I read on this forum that the Fisters themselves can cost plenty sometimes. Also I change my own oil but it cost me almost a hundred to do it myself, I just like tinkering. In any case here in Vegas I think Trophy Performance is a good shop and they do good work. I'm sure there is always someone cheaper and they may or may not be as good. If you find some place that makes you happy you should use them, its as easy as that.
Have to agree. Most likely the other $400 price tag was just doing a gundo "HACK". The only other substitute for a Fister Sport can is another Fister Sport can.
Purchase fister mufflers from Darin fister himself brand new- $350
Reno Rennsport charged me (and only took) 3/4 of an hour of labor to install per the suggestion from Darin- $80 or so. (They did a beautiful job)
Total- $430
No it was not the "hack" I don't take the cheap route when it comes to any of my cars, I do it right the first time, whether it's the 911 or the S550 (S is brand new and under warranty so that helps)
The guys at trophy were either trying to get me to pay $700 for a $350 set of mufflers, OR trying to get me to pay for 4 hours of labor on an install that Darin says his shop does in just under an hour or so. I would say paying anything over $500 maybe $550 is unreasonable for the legitimate FisterD exhaust, even if the shop has a markup on the mufflers.
