Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I changed my dash speakers first, then the doors and lastly the rears.
Leading evidence: 'Replace dash speakers first' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'upgrade' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check front trunk and see what (if any) amp you're' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I replaced the stock amp with a real Alpine amp that is located where my CD changer was in the frunk.

I used Gorilla Glue and RTV silicone to secure the Alpines to the stock speaker cradles.

The Alpines made a huge difference, but my two dash speakers were both blown so anything was probably an upgrade.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone's upgraded their speakers in their 996.
Are there 6 total?
What type/size would you recommend?
I have an aftermarket head unit, but want better sound from the speakers...more base, sharper sound, no distortion at higher volumes.
Is there a specific fitment?
Any and all help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
Your musical taste and budget would go a long way in help answering your question along with how particular you are with sound(audiophile type ears or casual listening ears, etc).
He's all about that bass, that bass, that bass. No treble.
If you've already got an aftermarket head unit, check the front trunk and see what (if any) amp you're running. Speaker upgrades, more power, and a sub box...
Thanks guys!
haha I listen to about to a little bit of everything, and yes, its all about that bass, no treble. But mainly country.
I will probably ask the BestBuy installers what speakers fit in the doors, probably skip out on the sub (SAVE WEIGHT SAVE WEIGHT lol jk) but a good amp and good speakers should do the trick.
I just need to figure out the speaker configuration.
Thanks for the help guys.
Your speakers are not standard sizes. I know, I have replaced all of mine. You will need to cut some plastic from the existing speaker mounts and epoxy in the replacement speakers. It takes about 15 minutes each to do this if you are somewhat handy and have a Dremel tool or equivalent. I bought Polk 4x6 plate speakers (DB461P 2 pair) and Polk 6-1/2 (DB651's 1 pair for the doors). The dash and rear speakers are the same and there is 1 tweeter and 1 mid-range in each one. The Polk plate speakers fit nicely into the spaces. If you search you will find pix of mine and the other guy that did it before me. The biggest issue with speaker fitment is that except for the rear location, the spaces are shallow and most speakers will not fit. Good luck.
I found this DIY to be very useful:
http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...-speakers.html
I did the same install using:
4 X Alpine SPS 410 4" coaxial speakers in the dash and rear (from Amazon)
2 X Tang Band W5-1138SM 5-1/4" Neodymium Subwoofer (from Parts Express)
I think it sounds great, for not having a subwoofer. The speaker boxes in the doors are easily modified.
Amazing info, thanks so much guys.
Why does Porsche have to make everything so complicated?
I'll keep you guys posted on the setup once it's done.
Thanks again for the link as well as the part numbers, can't thank you guys enough.
All the best!
I updated the head unit to an alpine CDE-HD148BT
I updated the front dash speakers and rear seat area side panel speakers to JBL GTO 328
I updated the front door speakers to JBL GTO 528, these required the factory door speaker mounting buckets to be trimmed a bit to make them fit
So far I have left the sub box speakers factory
I put a pair of Infiniti reference 4" in the dash. Requires some modification of the housing but made that work.
I have a pair of 6.5" Infiniti reference that I may try to fit in the door. I know 5" would work better. But I have these laying around and they match the fronts. So figured worth a shot. Has anybody fitted 6.5" in the doors?
I will likely then disconnect the rear fills and add a sub box sitting on the shelf behind the rear seats. I have a old kicker Stillwater designs tube and amp left over too and looks like it will just fit there. I am building a removable board for that. Just need to figure out the best way to run power to it. The rear of the wiring is easy. I have an alpine head unit too with sub rca.
Mine has the 40x6 factory amp which is decent so far but will see if it drives good door speakers ok. I may upgrade that too. I have a nice 4x50 amp also sitting around that I could pull into duty here.
Having installed 6-1/2's in my doors I don't think that 5"ers would be any easier. The exception would be if they are too deep for the location.
I changed my dash speakers first, then the doors and lastly the rears. Swapping out the rears made more of a difference than I predicted.
I replaced the stock amp with a real Alpine amp that is located where my CD changer was in the frunk. My music is played through thumbdrives and iPhone now.
Everything went just fine. The Alpines made a huge difference, but my two dash speakers were both blown so anything was probably an upgrade. I have M490 option with door speakers and 6x40 watt OEM amp and Kenwood BT362U head unit.
I used Gorilla Glue and RTV silicone to secure the Alpines to the stock speaker cradles.
