All I can tell you is when I rebuilt an engine and reassembled it I left nothing to chance and checked the camshaft timing -- twice -- very carefully to ensure it was correct.

i am not feeling confident about the chain tensioner in bank 4-6 so i am going to replace it (might as well while the engine is out of the car)....and then check/set the timing again on both sides...

I rotated the engine 7 times and checked the timing again.

Setting Timing on 2001 996

Suggestion

While it is possible that upon reassembly you managed to get the timing just right -- at least to you it appears that way -- you should still double check the timing to ensure it is correct, for both cylinders and all 4 cams.

In engines that allowed it I used a 1/2" drill motor to spin the oil pump with an extension to prime the oil system.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Question for the folks that know (Macster, Jake...) Is it common to have bank 1-3 timing allocation be correct after a total rebuild of the engine? My Bank 1-3 was dead on and didn't require any adjustment at all (first pic), and my 4-6 was only slightly off (2nd pic).

POST 2Original post

Sorry, I'd like to help but I'm no expert at this timing business. All I can tell you is when I rebuilt an engine and reassembled it I left nothing to chance and checked the camshaft timing -- twice -- very carefully to ensure it was correct. While it is possible that upon reassembly you managed to get the timing just right -- at least to you it appears that way -- you should still double check the timing to ensure it is correct, for both cylinders and all 4 cams.

POST 3Original post

Subscribed. I don't know anything but I would think at crank TDC each bank of cams would be the same amount advanced/retarded.

POST 4Original post

That pic isn't slightly off.. Its a mile off. Rotate the engine CW 7 times and re- check. Also, ensure the chain tensioners are pumped up when doing this.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12114828

Thank you for the advice. I will rotate 7 times and try again. Also, i had the chain tensioners pumped but had to relieve some of the pressure because i couldn't screw them in (as they were too tight). Is that okay???

POST 6Original post

They must be all the way in and torqued to 59#. This isn't adding up, sure you had them in the proper positions? They should not be that tight.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12114890

I got them torqued to 59 ft lbs with no issues....what i mean to say is that when i pumped them in oil they got very stiff. So much so that i couldnt screw them in without draining off just a little bit of the oil so that the pin would go back a bit and let the thread on the screw reach the threading on the case.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12114906

That's a relief! Btw, the tensioner for bank 4-6 did not get as tight as the other 2....should I look to replace it?

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 12114916

Did you replace the main timing chains?

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12115783

Yes. All chains are new...just that the tensioner on 4-6 did not pump up as hard after immersing (and pumping) in oil. It was rather soft i thought.

POST 12Original post

jshalmo, I am at the same rebuild stage as you. The issue that concerns me is how to carefully prime the entire oil circulation system before it runs. In theory ,a dozen short bursts on the starter motor with the fuel relay/fuse removed should do it ? But this is an M96 - there must be some obscure 'gotcha' issue?

POST 13Original post

From what I've seen at the track that is what the racers do...run the starter, get about 10 full crank turns out of it, then hit the ignition switch and fire it up. I've also done that on a couple of engine rebuilds myself. Seems nerve wracking to just let the starter run and turn the engine over and over, but it works to get the oil primed and moving, particularly to the camshafts and lifters.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12116929

Hi Schnell...i was reading a really great thread a few months ago about another rennlister who did a complete rebuild. It was beautifully documented...anyway, that gentleman kept the plugs off for several cranks and then installed the plugs and coils and fired it up on the first try. He attached a video at the end of the post...

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12114828

Jake, thanks for the tip. I rotated the engine 7 times and checked the timing again. Both banks were still perfect... i am not feeling confident about the chain tensioner in bank 4-6 so i am going to replace it (might as well while the engine is out of the car)....and then check/set the timing again on both sides...

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 12116929

In engines that allowed it I used a 1/2" drill motor to spin the oil pump with an extension to prime the oil system. This pumps oil throughout the engine's oiling system *without spinning the engine*. The oil flows into and around and out each bearing interface. In the case of the Porsche engine you can't spin the oil pump. Thus my suggestion would be to explore rigging up a pump fed from a bucket of fresh oil that would feed oil to the engine through the hole the oil pressure switch screwed into. The pump could be driven/spun by an electric drill motor. Another way would be to get one of those oil/grease guns used for greasing/lubing grease and oil fittings on heavy equipment and machine tools. I used one in the shop where I worked to lube heavy/large machine tools. I filled the thing not with grease -- I had a different gun filled with grease for those fittings that required grease -- but with the proper machine oil. I would pump the handle until I spotted oil oozing out from between the machine ways. Spinning the engine with the starter motor with the fuel pump fuse removed would be the last way I would try to lube an engine before starting. Who wants to spin the engine on possibly under lubricated bearings in order to generate oil flow and pressure using the engine's oil pump? Not me, that's for sure.
