White Out -- I checked KSport on EBay, and a complette set is about $1400 or Best Offer.

I ran K-Sport on my last 996 and it was a great product.

Yeah, I'm talking about UNDER $1000 (not "$1100", etc.), and new, not someone's used "low mileage" high priced set).

Suggestion
I hope you didn't encounter all the maintenance/repair nightmare that's usually associated with the 7 series.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's time to replace the shocks on my 2002 C2 Targa, and, as many other 996 owners, I'm thinking of lowering as well as using coilovers.
EBay has a couple auctions for a set of 4 coilovers that actually are UNDER $900 for the set ( you have to try a "Best Offer" option).
Here is an example:

Like many Rennlist 996 owners, I do not track the car, nor do we drive fast (except occasional spurts to make sure that I still know what 100mph feels like -- and to pass Japanese rockets).

So, is ANYONE WILLING to tell me if they have tried a set of these lower-cost coil overs, and give me a hands-on opinion based on their experience?
Thanks.
The valve and piston seals, tolerance, QC, spring material/quality, adjustability, and warranty are the weakest spots.
There are a few different private label brands on eBay but most originate from the same manufacturer(most in Taiwan).
1. Valve/piston seals tend to leak and go out prematurely, especially the more you lower it. Think of these as 1-2yr coilovers at the max.
2. Not very good QC control. You may luck out and get a good set or you may not.
3. Inferior spring manufacturing processes. Some do not shot peen, heat treat, nor powder coat their springs, which could lead to sagging or broken springs over time.
4. Adjustability is a joke. For marketing purposes, they try to wow the avg consumer into thinking you need or can feel 35 way adjustable shocks. Usually 35 position shocks usually mean 3 position shocks in reality on these things.
5. Warranty is a joke or non existent if you ever need it, regardless if they come with "lifetime" warranty.
Alpine hit the nail on the head. Coming from the e36 BMW crowd I've seen many reviews on "cheap" coilover kits. Sure, they tend to work just fine if a lower ride is all you're looking for, and I've heard of kits lasting 3-4 years, but I wonder how good the quality of ride remains after that time?
For the price of those coilovers you could invest in some H&R springs and bilsteins which would last 5x longer, improve the feel/handling, and still lower your car.
^^^ Pimp. I hope you didn't encounter all the maintenance/repair nightmare that's usually associated with the 7 series. I lol'd at the cost of sway bars for example...
Also, it's important to note that the avg consumer or "style" crowd doesn't really know how to detect or know what good dampening is. Their primary concern is the look and as long as the car is being held up. If you put any of these ebay CO's on a shock dyno and compare it to something like Bilstein or Koni, you will immediately be able to see the difference in dampening.
I can second that
As someone mentioned if all you want is a lowered stance buy
"some H&R springs and bilsteins which would last 5x longer, improve the feel/handling, and still lower your car."
Side note:
nice 7series I came from the VIP scene so I can appreciate long bodies. But mine were extreme on the ride height, excessive wheel fitment, and camber haha.
I have had several 7 series, they are great cars. They just always want coolant repairs and suspension stuff. Everything else is bulletproof.. I wouldnt hesitate to buy 10 more.. I'm a glutton for punishment it seems I mean I own a 996... I must hate myself. Ha!
Great input so far, and thanks to all.
White Out -- I checked KSport on EBay, and a complette set is about $1400 or Best Offer. Do you have any idea how low an offer they will accept?
I am balancing the cost of 4 Bilsteins with HR springs with a set of coilovers that give height adjustment.
I purchased the Yellow DPS system about three years ago for my C4 and my friend Rolf purchased the same system for his '03 C2 cab. I have never been happy with my purchase, by the same token, Rolf loves his DPS system. As far as the warranty goes, about six months ago, one of my drop links broke and I tried to get the seller to sell me one from the manufacturer, and they just ignored me
. I finally had one custom made at a cost of a little under $200 plus installation. I personally would not recommend them to anyone
but they are not bad from the price and they are pretty rugged
Yah, I guess we've been spoiled by places like Walmart that sell the exact same items as "fancy stores", but at half the price.
Ergo, always want to check that I'm not being the fool paying double just for the privilege of having it in a shopping bag that says I got it at Gucci.
I think there are quite a few examples of this in the Porsche world, huh?
Well, don't beat yourself up for wanting to be thrifty. I suspect every bit of advice you have gotten above is good advice - I have no experience with anything but Bilsteins, so I would just be guessing.
BUT, if you post a thread about a discount ANYTHING on here, you will get the same advice as you got above. It doesn't matter if it is brake pads, tires, aux input cords or LED tail lights. And God help you if you ever mention a discount oil. Now, there may be a very good reason for this consistent advice - it may be 100% correct to ensure quality by always purchasing expensive name-brand items. I'm just saying that you will always get the same advice from us Porsche guys. Remember that this is the same group of guys that routinely recommends newbies to PPI a car to death to ensure nothing is wrong with it before buying, then in the same breath recommends the buyer immediately spend $5,000 fixing parts that aren't broke "just in case". There may exist a good set of discount coilovers on the market, you just may have to ask in different circles.
"Ergo, always want to check that I'm not being the fool paying double just for the privilege of having it in a shopping bag that says I got it at Gucci."
That's funny/ironic, because I'm sure there are at least a few here who would and do buy brand P , for exactly that reason...did I just say that?
... yup

Yeah, I suppose I should be more tolerant. It always bothered me that the CEO of General Motors did not know the difference between a glow plug and a spark plug, but why should my definition of "superficial" be any different from a physicist viewing my knowledge of engine dynamics as being elementary.
.......now that I have become kinder and gentler, and have started believing that "hope" is actually a plan.
