after a very long drive today 500km I noticed that at speed/acceleration it also hesitates getting to redline, impression that there is lack of fuel, so new fuel is filter is ordered and the fuel pump will also be inspected (high mileage car so that could be worn down) but the starting thing makes me bit nervous

could those be some of the chain tensioneers, not holding up at that moment or either at a phase where there is no oil pressure yet it changes the timing a bit?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the story is following I have noticed that my car sometimes doesn't want to start. it cranks for about a half a turn and then stops, when I release the key and immediately try it again it jumps to life like a champ. I cannot get my head around this, I tried putting a different battery not a new one (yet) but from a diesel car with rather good sarting amps. the alternator has been replaced (did not charge properly 12,5~12,9V) now it does 14V steady. thought the starter is to blame, removed it, looked perfect and then decided to give it to the electric guys, to rebuild it with all the bits new. So it is basically perfect as well, checked all the clamps and ground wires, all don't show no signs of wear or corrosion. So I don't know what to do next, the car can start 5~7 times perfectly and then it doesn't want to, but every single time if I try it again I starts without any hesitation. after a very long drive today 500km I noticed that at speed/acceleration it also hesitates getting to redline, impression that there is lack of fuel, so new fuel is filter is ordered and the fuel pump will also be inspected (high mileage car so that could be worn down) but the starting thing makes me bit nervous could those be some of the chain tensioneers, not holding up at that moment or either at a phase where there is no oil pressure yet it changes the timing a bit? (camshaft tensioneers) this can be either cold or hot. or the IMS chain tensioneer? any ideas opinions on what to inspect?

POST 2Original post

What you haven't done is the easiest to do...try a new battery. I have had hesitation at starting happen with me in other cars and it always ended up with a dead battery. My two cents.

POST 3Original post

Ignition switch. Electrical gremlins in a 996 are often caused by a bad ignition switch. It is a $12 US part.
