Pretty much paying for the clean mesh attachment hardware.

Suggestion
Not saying it's a bad idea to clean more often, or that it's a bad idea to add grills (provided they aren't so fine they significantly cut down the airflow to the radiators.

Suggestion
I don't have screens on mine and don't mind doing my cleaning ritual but it is interesting the variance in our experience under fairly similar conditions.

My indy and I were replacing the mesh yesterday and he came up with a different idea of how to apply it.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A year ago I put some mesh to keep debris from clogging the radiators.
Here's V1.0, functional, but not as good as I'd like:

Looks MUCH better and I think will last more than a year this time.
Oh, and it is definitely worth it putting the mesh on, there was just a few pieces of debris.
Here's V 2.0:
IMHO,, That mesh is also a bit small, that size can air block,
Spray a window screen with a hose,, water doesn't go through.
Put a hair dryer to a window screen and see how it backs up..
Ideally the screen needs > 1/8 holes.. I like 3/16, you want to allow the air flow and
only material that will wash out of the fins of the radiator and condenser.
Thats a good effort! Bumper removal am everything! Our mesh grilles install without bumper removal. Take a look at them at

from the looks of the side openings, the current Radiator Grill Store 996.2 side radiator grill may fit. We wont know without testing. We unfortunately dont have the center radiator grill yet.
Wow, those look really nice, very professional. If I didn't know it, I would have thought those were factory options.
Do they restrict any of the air flow?
After installation on over 1000 cars, and multiple DE cars and a race team, not noticeable change in the temperatures. Sure beats the alternative of leaves and debris build up!

I've had this screen material on it since August of last year. So I went thru a whole year of almost 20K miles in the South Texas heat, in traffic, and cruising at over 80+ most of the time, with no issues on the coolant temp. I don't track the car, and remember it has the third radiator because of the tiptronic, that may have a lot to do with it.
Just my opinion, but I think this is perhaps the 2nd-most over-hyped "necessary upgrade" on these cars (IMSB being the obvious #1). Lots of expensive solutions out there, and then because those exist, people feel the need to find a cheaper way to accomplish the same thing as those expensive solutions.
Frankly very little debris gets in there. A simple shop-vac treatment every 6 months or so takes out 99% of what's in there, and the other 1% can just live there, and get cleaned out by a bumper removal once every 10 or 15 years. If you live in an area where you're constantly getting pelted with millions of leaves, maybe you need to up that maintenance schedule to 3 months and 5 years or something.
20+ years after starting to make water-cooled cars, Porsche still isn't putting fine-mesh radiator screens on their cars, so they must not think it's a problem either. Neither is anybody else; almost every single car has radiator grilles with openings that will let in leaves, pine needles, twigs, cigarette butts, etc. It's not a big deal; just clean it occasionally.
Currently no one makes grill inserts for a base model 03 C2 with a tiptronic.
I beg to differ, if you drive your car every day you'll need to take the bumper off and move the radiators and thoroughly clean them.
No, it is a big deal, just because a manufacturer doesn't do it doesn't mean it doesn't need to be done.
I would LOVE to have a nice set of grill inserts like what's available for most 911's, but my year and with tip isn't available. So my only option is put up with the debris and clean it every year, or make something myself.
Fair enough. I drive mine 12 months of the year, ~3-4 days a week, ~8000 miles a year, in PA where there are plenty of leaves. I find if I suck it out a couple times a year with a shop vac, nothing accumulates. When I took the bumper off for other work this year and separated the A/C condensers from the radiators to clean in there for the first time since they were married in 2001, the amount of debris on both sides was trivially small. So I feel pretty good about not taking the bumper off for another 10+ years.
Not saying it's a bad idea to clean more often, or that it's a bad idea to add grills (provided they aren't so fine they significantly cut down the airflow to the radiators. I'm just saying I don't think it's a necessity to add. But a lot of 996 info pages suggest this is a necessary addition and that if you don't do it, your radiators will be toast.
I cleaned out my radiator with my shop vac yesterday. (Its been about 12 months (12k miles) since I removed my bumper)
Heres what I pulled out of my radiators.
I need to remove my bumper soon to get the rest, and maybe install some screens.
Mine has been quite a different experience. I store my car away during winter months, and put on about 6000-7000 miles/year. I vacuum mine a couple to times each summer. When I remove the bumper cover over the winter and separate the rads, I consistently get 1/2-3/4 cup of crap each time. I don't have screens on mine and don't mind doing my cleaning ritual but it is interesting the variance in our experience under fairly similar conditions. Just goes to show there are a lot of variables in experiences.
6 to 7K a year is relatively light ,, I've put over 10K on ours in 5 months.. LOL
Mine collected a LOT of scruff in it just in that time and I haven't pulled the bumper yet..
Just fishing stuff out of the hole has been interesting.. Evergreen needles are way
worse than leaves.. stick to everything..
Received my radiator grills for my 2002 cabriolet. Even though its 20degrees this morning in northern NJ, I decided to attempt the install on May ingested garage. Gotta say the cold really motivated this 66 year old. The install took a total of 15 minutes and it looks great. Thanks Radiator Grill Store for an excellent product with quick delivery and easy installation.
I pulled my bumper today for its annual major cleaning. I vacuumed them out two months prior to parking for the winter, maybe 1000 miles ago.
