Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I just saw an ad on Craigslist for an early 996 with a blown engine... asking price $14k. I emailed him offering $4k, since a new motor installed is about $10k. I doubt he'll appreciate my sincerity.

POST 2Original post

sometimes the truth hurts.. Now am I talking about you or the seller?

POST 3Original post

Sometimes? Are you serious? Of course my life is dedicated to being a d!ck. I would be lucky to get $14k for my well maintained '99 in perfect running order.

POST 4Original post

I keep wondering where all these $10,000 motors are? Maybe Motormeister, certainly not from Porsche or Flat6. Depending on what is wrong with the engine and what you DIY skills are $4,00-$8,000 might be reasonable. $14K is crazy money.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hoho! It gets better! Here's his response: Vincent Verdichizzi [email removed] to me 9:54 PM (3 minutes ago) Ok moron On Sep 29, 2011 9:31 PM, "Van Svenson" wrote: > ** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY > ** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home > ** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping > ** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams > > Hi there a 10 year old 996 goes for about mid-teens with a working engine. > A new engine is about $10k installed. Would you take $4,000 for your car?

POST 7Original post

Sad part is 4-5K is all its really worth broken.. Lots are advertised for more, but they never move.

POST 8Original post

So is he saying OK Moron I will take the $4,000? If he won't take the offer one has to wonder who the real moron is. If you are willing to break the car up and sell it piece by piece on eBay, etc. you might be able to get more than $4,000. Heck you could probably get 1/2+ that for the tranny, but that is a lot of work.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Here's the ad: http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/cto/2619770164.html Doug, the sad thing is, cars like these do tend to be worth more in parts. I recently parted out my wrecked 944 turbo for more than I could have gotten for it whole (prior to the accident).

I know Jake - it really was a serious offer on my part. I would have stepped up with the cash and done a transaction.

POST 11Original post

I was offered $7500 for my 2001 with a cracked head from the dealership mechanic.

POST 12Original post

Cracked head repair, $2K-$5K. Cracked sleeve repair $6K-$10K+. Also a '99 vs. a '01.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 8908201

so you are not a dick.....dude cant you get anything right

POST 14Original post

I'd have to see the car in question, but these cars are definitely worth more than the sum of their parts. If $4K is all someone can sell it for whole, parting it out is probably the best option. For example, if it was my car (also a '99): what are HID headlights worth used? Full black leather interior? 3 spoke steering wheel? 18" wheels & tires? How about a full factory MkI aero kit? Parting it out would definitely net me more than $4K. Then since my brother works for a metal recycling company, I could sell him the picked-clean but still perfectly straight chassis for the going scrap metal rate. Finally I could film the chassis going through the shredder and post that on youtube. Seems a shame. Let's hope it doesn't ever come to that.

POST 15Original post

You know what they say...in this world there are only dicks, pu$$ies, or a-holes...

POST 16Original post

Can I vote all of the above? But the dudes name is Vinny?

POST 17Original post

You could definitely piece it out and get far more than $4K if that is what one wants to do. And from the picture it looks like Vinny has a place to do it. But $13K-$14K would be pushing what you would get for it in pieces (IMHO). And I can just see the look on my wife's face (not to mention the neighbors) if I start junking cars in my backyard.

POST 18Original post

problem with a part out is there are the easy picking parts,....and then a whole bunch of really tough to sell pieces....a whole bunch of them!

POST 19Original post

Rule #1 when buying any used car... Do not deal with New Yorkers named Vinnie!

LOL.. thats is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw his name was Vinster

POST 23Original post

I'm asking a sincere question here: is the seller's price so crazy, and is his response not understandable if he believes it is? If the car is in great condition minus a broken engine (of which I have absolutely no understanding/knowledge of how it would be fixed) and its a 2001 C4 (which I believe it is), and the fix is between $6K and $10K, then a well-maintained, low-mileage (not sure what the mileage was) 2001 C4 at $19,500 is, IMHO, far from a crazy price with a rebuilt engine. High end brings the price to $23,500, which gets fairly high(er) for a 2001 C4, but not insane. It's been discussed that the price on these cars is inching up and I agree that the 2002.5 engines are still going to command more, but here's a car that would have a "new" engine that ideally could be built well. From what I read you get the car and the broken engine.... I'm not sure the seller's response is, in that context, crazy at all, nor is the price. Although what do I know. Is "Van" the Nordic equivalent of "Vin?" Just askin'....Van they don't have posters of youte's on the internet do they?

POST 24Original post

its not crazy to want to sell your car for as much as you can...and in your thinking the numbers make sense, but it is very risky because with a dead car there can be a lot of unknowns that might make the new motor turn into a new motor, a new ECU and a new transmission.... i forget what he was asking for it, but maybe he will sell it and prove Van the Dick wrong

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lol - maybe I am the Guido of swedes. I drive a '99 C4... and unless this one is some kind of pristine, high optioned, low mileage gem, in which case the seller would have stated such and/or taken better pictures, it's realistically worth mid- to high-teens. And that's with a working engine so the buyer can test drive it and take it for a PPI. What is its actual value with a dead engine? That's certainly up for debate. If you had the facilities to take the car apart and were patient, it's probably worth $10k+. If you actually wanted it sold, tomorrow... I'm sure my $4k offer is all that he's gotten - however ridiculous Vinnie *thinks* it is. If Vinnie wants blue-book value, he should pay to have Advance Auto in Newburgh (his local shop) put in a new engine. I know what they charge - I've seen 996s that they've replaced engines on. But, if Vinnie spends $10k getting this working again, that's not going to instantly make it a $24,000 car. P.s. you're never going to convince a buyer that a car with a replacement engine should demand top dollar. A replacement engine, no matter how sensible, is going to be a ding against the car.

POST 26Original post

Well, I think if I had a blown engine on my '99, and I didn't have the coin to ante up for a proper new Porsche engine, I would just do one of those Chevy V8 conversions and drive the car another 100,000 miles or until I had the ability to put a proper 996 engine in it at a later date. I certainly wouldn't offer it up to you vultures.
