I just ca t find any diagrams with this mysterious cable that I no know I didn't need to disconnect when removing the engine.

Suggestion

If you have a volt meter with a continuity setting like a beep test when you touch the probes together you can find out which side of the battery the strap runs back to , with the battery disconnected of course , wrap some spare wire around the live battery strap keeping it away from the battery, wrap the other end of the wire around one probe then touch the other probe to the connection your not sure about if it beeps that connection runs back to live if not try moving the wire over to the earth strap side of the battery connection again away from the battery then see if it beeps , my betting is it will meaning this strap goes to earth , I'm pretty sure there is only one heavy duty connect

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There is a little bracket mounted to a coolant pipe above the tranny.this plug has a bolt and nut to attach the power cable coming from the front of the car to a cable that then attacheds to the starter cables jump post. I went to start putting my engine back in and noticed another cable that I believe attached to this bracket as well. This cable is wrapped with the same wired that go to the tranny revers switch but is not part of that same circuit, at least I don't think it is. This loose cable has a large space end with a hole in it , its heavy gauge and I just need to confirm it is secure in this bracket. I drew a make shift pic in the attached photos, any help is appreciated as I cant proceed till I k ow if it's a ground or not. Thansk6

POST 2Original post

I sure hope your battery is disconnected! The ground strap for the engine goes from the engine to the frame right in front of the rear passenger wheel. #29 in the diagram. The heavy gauge wire near the transmission #17 and #19 are high amperage 12V + and connect in the box near the transmission tunnel. Please consider not connecting things without finding out if they are positive or negative. You could start your car on fire. Get a volt meter and test the wiring first....without connecting the battery until you know for sure what is + or -

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes that is my fear, I did locate the ground you spoke of so I can rule that one out. I just ca t find any diagrams with this mysterious cable that I no know I didn't need to disconnect when removing the engine. I comes out of the same opening as the reverse switch wires and land right about where this little junction bracket is so I suspect it goes there but I need to confirm it does not elsewhere. Thank for the reply!

POST 4Original post

Sorry...I should have said OHM meter so you can check for continuity. One wire on the positive battery cable (disconnected of course from the battery) and one wire to the end that you are questioning. That should tell you all you need to know. Good luck! Why did you pull your engine?

POST 5Original post

I know this won't help you now, but might someone else...Masking tape and a marker to label everything you disconnect (worked for me) will save you a lot of time.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah i just went in there all will Billy, thinking my steel trap of a mind would remember....not so lol. I am going to do that next time. I removed the engine to do the heads one was cracked and Hoffman repaired it, will see how it holds up. I'm a little concerned because I see what looks like JB weld lol!

POST 7Original post

If I remember correctly (997s polluting my brain) the additional wire with lug is the power feed for all the electronics on the rear shelf (DME, relays, etc). this could be easily confirmed with a continuity check between the lug and the power supply (30) terminals on the rear shelf components. good luck!
