So I use my bike but miss my 996 which is sadly a weekend driver.

Suggestion
Removing the Bose woofer to adjust the rears is a pain, so what I do is leave the little "Bose" plates and the long torx mounting screw off.

Personally I wouldnt stress on the IMS/RMS issue, I met a fellow member yesterday at a local Porsche event who owns a 40th and has over 180,000 miles on!!, he drives it everywhere and its totally standard, and he just changes the oil every 5,000.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After a couple years of researching, looking and comparison shopping, I finally bought a Porsche - #1147 40th AE. It's only gone 34.5K miles in the hands of the previous owners, of which there have been three.
I had driven a bone stock 1999 a number of years ago and, while it was a very nice car, it left me wanting. Fast forward five or so years and a number of cars owned/sold later and I came away with a much more positive view of the 996 after driving a friend's 1999 911. Specifically, I was impressed with how solid the car felt with 115K miles. He's put a fair amount of work in it to get to that point, but it's impressive nonetheless. I was convinced that I could drive a 996 on a daily basis. It's faster than any sane person needs to go on public roads, makes a great grand tourer and is fairly robust is one starts with a good foundation and observes the proper maintenance schedule. I narrowed the field to the later 3.6 cars. At first, I didn't think much of the 40 AE. After researching the car & learning that it is so much more than a badge job, I was sold. I'm not a Porsche purist and am willing to take advantage of the fact that the 996 is the red-headed stepchild of the 911 family. At current market values, they're a lot of car for the money. Even before buying one, the 40th AE 911 seemed underrated to me. The purist may regard it as something akin to being the valedictorian of summer school. To me, it's like the indie guitarist who plays like a man possessed, but never receives the recognition he deserves.
I researched quite about the AOS/IMS/RMS issues & purchased a warranty with my car to get me through the first 5 years/65K miles of ownership. The Porsche is not my only car, but I still plan to drive it ~8-10K miles per year. My hope is that if anything major fails, it does so under warranty. A PPI revealed a couple things that I missed, but the seller (CarMax) is working with me on those. They put in writing that they were going to fix the things that I found (driver's window regulator, oil leak - probably AOS) and told me that anything failing in the first 30 days will be covered. We'll see how that goes. My clutch also squeaks after the car is warmed up. The dealer who performed the PPI recommended replacing the clutch, but my research here suggests that may be a bit heavy handed. It could be a slave cylinder, clutch fork, or a number of other things.
Anyway, thanks for providing me with a wealth of resources prior to my purchase and I look forward to hanging out here even more. I'll post up some pics later. Also, what good indie Porsche mechanics are in the Denver area? I heard the service department at Prestige is my best bet if a dealer was the only option. Cheers.
Congratulations! I'm a fan of the 40s: Very nice mechanical specification-- and a real looker. May your grins-per-gallon stay as high as your city.
Topographically high, I mean.
Also: Pictures, please.
Sounds like a good choice to me and you sound protected with an extended warranty. Love your user name, welcome to the club. Pics would be a great way to share your new 40th.
My clutch pedal assist spring/damper thing squeaks all the time but not enough to worry about. If you're planning on doing IMS upgrade then address clutch issues then.
I do recommend the IMS sooner than later.
What options? Sport seats?
Any plans for mods or keeping it original?
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys.
Muchas gracias. So far, the gpg measurement stacks up (pun intended) to our 7700 ft altitude.
Thanks. I love the desert west and like CCR, so the double entendre seemed appropriate.
Thanks for the advice, that's the way I was leaning. The car has the sport seats & Bose stereo. No plans for mods other than some super blue & different brake pads. I'll snap some shots of it in the wild if I'm able to take it over the hill (Vail Pass) for a planned trip to visit family in Grand Junction. There are some fantastic roads between here and there. I still need to set up a photobucket account to host the photos, but that will have to wait. Duty calls...
Enjoy your car, I have a 40th and its a great car, I think people do think of it as a badging/marketing exercise, when in reality it has a great spec.
Personally I wouldnt stress on the IMS/RMS issue, I met a fellow member yesterday at a local Porsche event who owns a 40th and has over 180,000 miles on!!, he drives it everywhere and its totally standard, and he just changes the oil every 5,000. The car looked great and is a testament to how good these cars are, made me realise I need to drive mine more!
ran a few laps in my .2S with a 40 in the group. Impressively fast car. Spoke to the owner to learn they came with the "x51" options... good luck with your new toy.
Good luck finding super blue. It's illegal now! But the amber version is still around, as is Motul.
If you're looking for some "dual purpose" pads I have tried Ferodo DS 2500s and like those, and Hawk DTCs and found them to be pretty awful. They made an enormous amount of dust, even for a track pad, and squeak even when you're just rolling along with no brakes applied. The DS 2500s survived a few track days at the FIRM without issue.
I'm super jealous of the sport seats. I really wish mine had them, especially the painted-back variety.
When I was looking for my C4S, I saw a good number of 40's for sale. Not having really investigated what they were all about I passed a few of them over. Knowing what I know now, kinda wish I would have picked one up. Price were a little lower 12-18 months ago. They are great and I love the fact that they have standard X51. Wish I had that, but I'm still happy with my car. It really dawned on me how special they are when I went to the Porsche Museum and saw a 40 (in the museum) and some 50's in the parking garage.
Congrats and post pics soon. Enjoy and welcome.
I still have a couple quarts in the garage from when I was running it in my STi & didn't realize it was illegal now. Thanks for the pad recommendation. That's the second time I've heard good things about the Ferodo pads.
Thanks again to everyone else for the warm welcome. Pics are coming as soon as I get a chance, which will probably be this weekend.
Quick question - If I want to get up my driveway this winter, snow tires are a must. According to the research I've done here, the 996 C4 wheels have the same front/rear offset as the C2. The only differences are that the C4 front wheels are 0.5" narrower and the rear tires are 265 instead of 285. My guess is that the C4 wheels will work on my car. The reason I ask is that there are (were?) a set for sale locally with snow tires already mounted. TIA.
996 is a great dd. I used mine as dd until this year. Now I got a job downtown Denver and my commute is 3 miles. So I use my bike but miss my 996 which is sadly a weekend driver.
Stevenson service is top notch. They did my rms/ims/Aos last year. I recommend you talk to Marcus (service advisor) and Chance (mechanic).
My favorite Indy is Storz. They only work on Porsches and provide great service. The shop doesn't look like much but who cares. I don't go there for coffee and wifi.
Enjoy your car and look forward to meeting you.
I agree that the 40th AE is a great car but keep in mind that yours with the low mileage 2004 M96 is in the highest risk zone for CEF due to the IMSB. I would do as others have suggested and replace sooner rather than later. It would be a shame to destroy an X51 by avoiding an easy fix.
Congrats and welcome. I'll add you to the 40AE registry and you'll be in it when I upload the updated version (the link is in my signature below). I echo the requirement for pics. Here's a recent one of my 40AE to encourage you. Since you've extensively researched this car you probably found the 40AE Registry/FAQ thread here on RL (
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...nd-faq-27.html
). Lots of good 40AE discussion. Stay active there and keep us updated on your experiences with the car.
Thanks for the welcome & the pic. For those clamoring for pics, just imagine Ted's car with mountains in the background.
I'll take a couple shots when I get it back, it's having a couple things fixed that were called out on the PPI.
I hear ya about the IMS bearing. I'll have them do it and the RMS if they decide to do the clutch. I may have it done anyway, even though the car is under warranty.
I still don't have the car back. The new AOS and clutch kit have been installed, but they're waiting on a new AC condenser. They believe that the one they put in was causing a fuse to blow after running the AC for a while. I appreciate the effort they've put into the car, but that doesn't make sense to me. The only thing I can think of is that the condenser in question was faulty to the point where the compressor had to work hard enough to overload the circuit.
Rats - was hoping the car was all done and back with you. Hopefully they've got everything under control now and that it won't be much longer. The wait and uncertainty must be horrible. Hang in there.
I'm in no way a mechanical expert, but this should help:
http://www.911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=60293
It explains that the 996 X51 has modified intake system (modified cross-section - sand cast aluminium replacing plastic).
Thanks. No plans to change the pumpkins any time soon. On my wishlist so far - 997 shifter, motor mounts (RSS?), and more aggressive dampers (Koni Sports?).
Beautiful. I just bought an 04 in the same color scheme and rims. Are yours refinished to that beautiful sheen? I ask because mine are stock and in need of a redo but haven't decided on what finish/color I want. Thanks Ralph
Nope, just washed.
Thanks. That's *exactly* what I've been doing. It's my weapon of choice for a ~30 mile commute. The last half of that commute returning home is twisty canyon roads, which suit the car fabulously.
Hmmm, did the 40th anniversary edition offer a different finish to those rims because mine look very different; no where near as shiny except in certain light(s) like this...
Sorry Miami, you're right mine isn't a 40th but I was wondering if the rims did get a different finish as part of the 40th anniversary package and you just answered my question so thank you! I ask because I'm researching refinishing mine. Ralph
I do recommend the Koni sports on a budget. On soft, more comfortable than the stock M030. On hard the car turns in sharply but the ride is unbearable! I adjust mine back and forth for every track day or autocross. Removing the Bose woofer to adjust the rears is a pain, so what I do is leave the little "Bose" plates and the long torx mounting screw off. As long as the rear seats are up, the sub can't go anywhere.
