Leading evidence: 'Replace chain tensioners and i would like' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace chain tensioners and i would like' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Anyhow, I guess changing the two tensioners that service the long chains that drive the exhaust cams would be top of the list.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Makes sense I guess as these are the longest chains and the tensioners are further away from the oil pump (still not that far though).
Hello folks...
I'm in the process of replacing my chain tensioners and i would like to know witch one to change first.
At start up when cold for a second i can here the chain slap in the engine and i would like to know base on your experience witch one make usually this sound at start up.
I know there is 3 tensioners witch one make this noise
Thanks

Hard to say. Probably varies based on how effective a seal each tensioner has and how throughly the oil in the system drains away.
However, I can add that based on my cars and when I start their engines what I hear is the noise from the chains that drive the exhaust cams which are driven by the intermediate shaft. Makes sense I guess as these are the longest chains and the tensioners are further away from the oil pump (still not that far though).
Note I do not hear any slapping noises. What I hear can best be described at a chain being pulled over a large piece of cut lumber. This noise is gone about as quick as it appears.
Anyhow, I guess changing the two tensioners that service the long chains that drive the exhaust cams would be top of the list.
Have to point out though if the noise is coming from the chain that the crankshaft uses to drive the intermediate shaft this can possibly subject the iMSB to conditions that could lead to its premature failure.
So if you believe the tensioners are bad enough to replace or just want to replace them for peace of mind doing the one at the crankshaft to intermediate shaft chain should be top of the list.
Really, while I'm not a fan of preventative maintenance at this level all 3 should be replaced at the same time. Then you have to think about the actuators and their chain tensioning functionality.
I did the 1-3 and IMS tensioners and no change. I have the updated 4-6 (allen head instead of a bolt head) but have not done it yet - the A/C compressor is in the way bad. If I pull the fuel pump fuse (C4) and spin the car over unil my oil pressure needle bumps it cranks quietly every time.
I really want to solve issue this too!
How many miles on your motor and what kind of oil you've been using? How long have you noticed it for? You may have bigger issues (like the plastic chain guides) if it is indeed worn out tensioners.
Alpine003...
The noise is really coming from the tensioners...the car has more then 65K and at each 3K miles i like to open the oil filter to have a look at it and i never discovered and trace of plastic parts or anything else so i'm sure the IMSB is still in a good condition.
I just don't want to spend near $500.00 in tensioners and at the end still have the noise so for this reason i will wait for DMW996...just to be sure.
One practice that can help you identify where the noise comes from is to use a 2-3 foot long hardwood stick and place it at different key locations on the engine with the other side to your most functional ear
I always do that especially on older engines (including the original 1945 ****** one) to diagnose bearings, journals, chain and other issues... it's been pretty accurate so far!
