I found some used ones for $350+ at the known Porsche dismantlers, but I want to avoid saving a few dollars to wind up with frayed wires or other wear issues since the units could be up to 15 years old.

The wiring in the halogen headlamp lenses have become crusty and one of the lowbeams is dim in my 99 996. Started a search and found four suppliers of the lens; Automotive Lighting, Bosch, Hella and Magnetti Marelli. What's most interesting is that they all look the same, but there are dramatic difference in prices. Any ideas or recommendations?

No difference. I've seen them all. It's my understanding that AL is just a partnership between Bosch and MM, and that Hella makes some of the components (turn signal socket).

I don't think you can just buy the lenses separately. They only come in entire assemblies. If you can prove me wrong, you will have made my day.

I'd try a junk yard first. There are plenty of 996's around. And most have computerized inventory systems.

Considering they can be purchased new online for under $480 no tax and shipped free uh. it's a no-brainer. Cheers.
