I just saw it in passing so not sure how it was mounted but I presume they had installed the tow hitch and the rack to it.

If it was crucial to carry the bike on the 911, I'd go with the hidden hitch route and use a receiver-type bike rack.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have an '03 C4S(bought last year) and a road bike. Training is not a problem but I am getting back into racing and need to be able to transport the bike. Could anyone please give their experience with the bike transport solutions that have worked for them? I am not averse to the Tequipment rack but the cost is somewhat off-putting, so I was looking for all available solutions. Thanks

POST 2Original post

Porsche has a bicycle rack for the roof transport system. the bike will be standing upright on the roof. I also saw a 911 the other day that had a bicycle rack at the back. I just saw it in passing so not sure how it was mounted but I presume they had installed the tow hitch and the rack to it. Looked pretty cool.

POST 3Original post

I bought a folding bike from Bike Friday in Eugene OR. The bike folds up and fits in the front trunk of my Boxster. It does not fit in the front trunk of the Turbo. It does fit on the passenger seat.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Folding bikes not really any good for racing, but thanks for the comment

POST 5Original post

If it was crucial to carry the bike on the 911, I'd go with the hidden hitch route and use a receiver-type bike rack. Not only is there a possibility of damaging the car every time the bike goes up onto the roof, the 911 with a bike on top is potentially tall enough to be a problem for low parking structures, garage door openings, etc...I'd be devastated if I forgot about the bike and did something stupid (and expensive). If parking isn't an issue, I personally would strongly consider a $500 beater pickup and leave the 911 unmolested.

POST 8Original post

Go to www.seasucker.com I bought one for my 2002 Carrera. $270 for a single bike set up.

POST 9Original post

I bought the factory rack off another member a few weeks ago - that's my recommendation It was considerably less than the new price, and included two bike rails as well. I'd recommend the factory rack with two color matched RockyMounts Euro Pitchforks. Check my sig pic for how it looks on a C4S PM me if you want the guy's contact info, as I think he had a second RTS available.

POST 10Original post

Factory rack is well worth it. I’ve used it on several 996s for many years. Especially if you’re talking about a bike you’d race, I feel like a secure way to transport it is necessary!

POST 11Original post

+1 on the factory Roof Transport System (the bars). They take Thule aero (not square bar) accessories, which are easy to find and the rack is rated to 180 lbs! Easily the most solid roof rack I've had on any car.

POST 12Original post

speechless........................and i want my click back

POST 13Original post

I do a lot of cycling and have an '04 C4S cab. My road bike is big, a 60 cm Tek Madone that I have been able to squeeze into the back seat, upside down, with the wheels detached in the front seat. Its a tight fit, and the chainring is right up against the underside of the roof. I'm looking to buy a used Saris Bones 3 rack off craigslist or e-bay; looks to me from what I've seen that it will fit on the back and the arch design will allow the spoiler to rise. Planning on putting sheepskin squares under the feet to protect the paint. Probably leave the wheels off and inside the car to minimize weight on the rack/car so it will move around less (hopefully no paint damage). Buying a used rack, at least it won't be too much lost if this approach doesn't work. I'm just not keen on drilling holes behind license plate to attach hitch, and roof rack is not an option with cab.

POST 14Original post

try and look into the rear hitch based system. I saw a 997 with one the other day but didn't have time to stop and take a photo. but a quick google shows some results http://www.willwoodsystem.com/

POST 15Original post

I vote for the roof based on lots of bike experience. I made a rear mounted carrier for my MR2 convertible that screws into the two tow hook receptacles but never like having my bike for a rear bumper. Roof mounts don't affect rearward vision. As far as damaging the car while loading and unloading, I never came close to doing damage over 15 years and some of that was with an almost 40 lb big, tall mountain bike sometimes with spiked tires.

I looked at Willwood but the retaining pin goes in vertically rather than horizontally. Because of this you are tied in to using their "system". You can't use a carrier from another company, such as Yakama.
