Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

However, I have also have given thought, wishing that they had changed the entire gauge binnacle to more of a square shape similar to the 914 but extended slightly.
Leading evidence: 'Replace entire gauge binnacle' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace can go a long, long way' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
I think the dash is an area ripe for improvement as Ryan H shows, some selective changes can go a long, long way.
Replace with a more traditional forward cockpit, ala 911

Ive looked on here thru all the threads I could and did not find any discussion of someone yanking all this out and replacing with a more traditional forward cockpit, ala 911.

Unsurprisingly, 996's use fairly typical early 2000's design styles.

Whats not growing on me the use of a single color for all the trim.

I always wondered if you could get the binnacle from a RHD car and cut it in half, along with a US LHD cut in half, join them together and install that on the dash (using the outboard side, not the large side)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi everyone. Im a 964 guy but keep coming back to early 996's. One thing that always keeps me away is the design of the interior from the forward edge of the seats forward. Im sorry if I offend anyone, but it just looks to me like an old Ford Taurus dash with all those ovals and sweeps. To me its a functional sports car and I want it to look like that when Im in it, not a space ship. Ive looked on here thru all the threads I could and did not find any discussion of someone yanking all this out and replacing with a more traditional forward cockpit, ala 911. Has this been discussed? Is there a source, or has anyone on here done this? This could put the 996 back on my target list. And for what its worth, I think these will be sought after as collectors in the future, similar to other not-so-loved examples of the breed in the past. Thanks for any help.
Lew
Well, while I have my own design criticisms of the dash, I will continue to keep it as is because I think that in time these analog 996's will become appreciated because of the limited nanny items that are currently in vogue. However, I have also have given thought, wishing that they had changed the entire gauge binnacle to more of a square shape similar to the 914 but extended slightly. I think that it could be fabricated in such a way as to change the existing gauge binnacle cluster without completely re-designing and fabricating the entire dash itself. At least for the time period, Porsche has evaded the entire insect F111/F22 1950's jukebox, chrome-plated dashboard treatment in favor of more harmonious design.
Coming from a 964 I felt the 996 had a lot of room for improvement. It's not as minimalist as a 964 but I feel like this is a significant improvement:
I really like how the gauges in the 996.1 intersect to form the display areas underneath. Such a great design. Unfortunately this was lost in the .2 facelift to gain a bigger display area.
I know you said you didn't mean to offend, but it's hard to say what you said and it not be offensive. You could have said what you wanted to say without the Ford Taurus and space ship references. That said, I don't take offense to the offensive statements. The GT3 center console delete is all you really need to make the 996 have a more classic look. I like the 964 interior, but I don't think it's all that for it to be used as a comparison of good interior design vs alleged bad interior design on the 996.
The issue may be that your used to the 964, which uses it's own era's design language. So wanting it to look like a sports car, to you, means wanting it to look like something from late 80s.
Unsurprisingly, 996's use fairly typical early 2000's design styles.
I Personally would hate to have my 996 look like a dated early 1990's car, but to each his own.
The thread posted above certainly shows that any level of modification is possible. Good luck!
I have no problem with the stock dash.
Cheap plastics aside, it fits the car and the time period.
But I have to admit that this looks great.
Outstanding work 👍👍
I appreciate everyone's input so far. I thought I wasnt trying to offend anyone but maybe I dont know myself and I really was. Either way, I hope it worked
Keep any input coming. My skin is thick. Im here to learn and wont get my feelings hurt along the way.
Thanks fellas.

When I was doing the interior overhaul, I did spend quite a few evenings staring at the below wondering if it was possible to fabricate a simple carbon fiber skin. It's surprising how much space there is behind the dash.
I think the HVAC unit would have to go to make it a more compact dash.
Oh, found the other image where I placed a few project boards for a mockup (didn't get very far) but this shows the aluminum bar that runs across the lower dash:
And no one brought up my swap!!!! I'm hurt guys... really hurt lol
Replica lambo diablo dash swap. I to was not a fan of the dash in the 996 so i had this laying around in my parts storage and decided to make it work. its not done yet but I'm liking where its heading. better pics in my build thread but its all on hold right now as we bought a new house and currently building the new man cave and remodeling etc.
Mine probably doesn't fit most tastes for dash swaps but ...its something lol
oh ya ... I see it now lolol I was just razzing anyway
I hope as our cars get older, more and more people start modding them up. They are such fun cars and i think there is plenty of room for improvements. For those who aren't concerned with keeping them stock anyway. I get that point of view as well but for me... cut em up guys lol
If the car is a collectible for you... then you will have one opinion... if its a toy or a tool, another.
The conversation has been going on and will continue as long as there are people around to argue about it.
If you have a history of modifying cars, that may stick with you, or if youre just a tinkerer.
If you like wrenching, only so much to do on a stock car that has stock car reliability.
Part of what drew me to Porsche was the thought that there was so much left on the table in stock form, be it interior design and materials, handling capability etc... and the platform (chassis) is so good, you have a strong foundation to be able to build from.
The Boxster/996 foray for Porsche into mass produced cars is really evident to me, in places like the materials and design of the interiors... but the dynamics the chassis allows, they still feel like something completely special that deserves the badge on the hood. But, a lot of those elements that allowed it to be so successful commercially, and financially for Porsche are why I, personally would never raise the standard Carrera, whatever variant a legitimate collector car in the light of the more rare or bespoke variants.
So for me... no surprise to anybody... mod away, get creative and have fun.
I think the dash is an area ripe for improvement as Ryan H shows, some selective changes can go a long, long way. Look forward to seeing people continue to push the envelope.
The Ford Taurus was a world class vehicle and I would be offended that anyone would be offended at the comparison of 2 automobiles of such distinction.
All late 90s dashboards are pretty bad.
Just look at any car from that era.
Ferrari 360, Lamborghini Diablo or the plastic junk called a dashboard in any BMW.
