Hi there - I have LHD car and installed the bracket on the passenger seat.

I also took out my almost 20 year old airbag when I installed my Momo steering wheel.

I ran this for a long time until I ran across a used Brey Krause fire extinguisher mount with a free Halotron fire extinguisher.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Not a question, just pretty happy with how it turned out. I couldn't justify $145 for just a mount, and I don't need it to be adjustable, so I used about $15 in parts.
Completed install in front of the passenger's seat. H3R 1.4lb HalGuard.
Main aluminum pieces with carriage bolts pressed in for studs. The small seat brackets are 1/8" x 1" and about 2.25" long aluminum with a M10 (10mm) hole for the seat bolts, and bent slightly to match the curve of the floor. The long bar is 3/16" x 1" aluminum. (only thicker because I messed up on the rest of the 1/8" stuff). M6 holes (actually 1/4") in each end for the small seat bracket studs.
I didn't want to use standard bolts, as these are against the carpet, so I wanted them very smooth. I also could have used domed phillips or torx bolts, but those heads are much higher, and the carriage bolts lay more flat.
I drilled the M6 holes (actually 1/4"). A nut with an oversized washer (to leave space for the aluminum to push through) was enough to pull the bolts into the 1/8" bar, but I had to invent a press to get the carriage bolts seated into the 3/16" thick bar.
After sanding, primer, wet sand, and two coats of flat black. Could have used gloss, but I had flat black on hand. I used new M10x1.5 x 30mm Class 12.9 bolts for the seat mount to the floor. My original were chewed up. The originals are M10x1.5 x 28mm Class 10.9. With the extra 3mm of bracket, I got the longer 30mm bolt to make sure it was fully seated.
Completed setup ready to install.
Installed. I actually had to flip the extinguisher holder around on the bracket from what is shown here. I put it too close to the rail, and the bottom of the tank hits the plastic cover. I actually like it better flipped though. Not happy that the socket scratched the paint around each nut.
I did have to notch the plastic rail covers very slightly to make space for the cross-bar.
Installed. The seat does hit the tank in the last 10% of forward adjustment. But I'm not worried about that.
Parts.

Exactly! But Autozone, I think. Pretty sure it's pre-Amazon. That piece has been in my scrap drawer for about 15-20 years, you know, just in case.
It's moment of glory finally came!
I recently installed a fire extinguisher too, only I used the OEM fire ext bracket (21 bucks on suncoast)
https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/o...et-99652167300
that mounts to the factory seats.

+ some hardware and it looks awesome
Nice. I'd love to see an installed pic. I wanted something super simple and clean; and this may be a good option for some.
I have Element Extinguishers in each of my other two car's glove boxes, they seem great. I did want the non-residue Halon option for the 996.
Thanks.
Usefullness depends on what I intend for it to do.
- I think/hope it's enough to buy a few seconds, potentially saving myself or a person in a fire.
- Will it put out a car-inferno to save it from being totaled so that I then have to worry about repairing fire damage instead of just getting a full insurance payout? I'm not trying to do that.
Edit: Which begs the question then, why did I buy the more expensive non residue Halon one? Great question. It makes no sense. I just liked it.
Nice DIY mount!
While I was shopping for my 996, before I even had found my 996.2, I bought a KAP fire extinguisher mount.
https://kap.industries/product/porsc...guisher-mount/
I bought a Halotron extinguisher.
It also rubs during the last 10%-ish of seat travel.
I ran this for a long time until I ran across a used Brey Krause fire extinguisher mount with a free Halotron fire extinguisher.
I figured why the heck not get a spare extinguisher.
What really surprised me was the Brey Krause mount.
It's the best I've seen.
Since the extinguisher is mounted to the seat, and not the seat rails, there is no rubbing at all.
https://www.bkauto.com/R_2020_Fire_E...t_p/r-2020.htm
I also have 2 Element extinguishers mounted to my rollbar.
I've considered installing the KAP mount on the drivers side and carrying 2 Halotron extinguishers...or buying another Brey Krause mount.
But do I really need 4 extinguishers in my 996?
I mean it's not a Ferrari...but 2 x 2.5lb Halotron & 2 x Element extinguishers sure would be nice to have on hand if I ever needed them.
You are better off GTFO of the car right away if it's on fire than to fiddle with that extinguisher. Also you'll buy more time leaving it behind and trying to save another person without it than to screw around with it and then trying to use it. We all know time is critical when things are on fire. This small extinguisher will waste more time than it could save.
I'm not sure what your point is, other than just being a contrarian.
Are you saying that any car is safer with NO fire extinguisher at all? That my 'something' is somehow worse than 'nothing'? That having any fire extinguisher is somehow actively harmful to safety?
Do you think I needed you to tell me to GTFO of a burning car? Next time I'm actively on-fire in a car, I'll do my best to remember your wise words, otherwise I might just sit there.
And were that situation to arise where someone/something valuable is on fire and stuck, I'll close my eyes and know that it couldn't possibly actually be happening, because Imo000 said I didn't need one, and therefore this scenario couldn't possibly be real.
You gave people a hard time in the Dashboard thread for removing the airbag. But you know, airbags don't help in all accidents, and obviously it's better to just not get into an accident. I'm really surprised I had to tell you that.
Yes that's what I'm saying. That tiny extinguisher is useless. You will waste more time trying to use it than to go without it. If you need to save something or someone, you are better off going straight to it than to waste time with that extinguisher. It's TOO SMALL to make any difference in a fire. If you are still hell bent on having one, get a proper size extinguisher. I didn't say to close your eyes and do nothing. What I'm trying to tell you is not to waste valuable seconds screwing around with that small extinguisher. But you don't need to believe me, go to your local fire hall and see what they say, just make sure not to steer the conversation in a direction you want the answer to go.
Removing the airbag in a street car is a stupid move.
1.4lb is a really small extinguisher, but what do I know, I have 3 extinguishers in my 996 and thinking about adding another one.
I also took out my almost 20 year old airbag when I installed my Momo steering wheel.
I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles(on the road and on track) for 4 decades in vehicles without airbags.
The Porsche airbag ain't magical.
Feel free to call me stupid.
🕺
oh yeah.... one more thing
With you’re smarter than everyone else thing you have going on... you sure you ain’t from Cambridge, MA... they got a lot of your type there...
Why do you feel a desperate need to argumentatively force your personal risk assessment and tolerance onto me?
You can move on now. I know you constantly troll, and I mistakenly took the bait, but take your 100lb ABC extinguisher, and seek validation somewhere else.
Edit: Not directed at TexSquirrel or zbomb!!
Cool. I think it's better than nothing, but what do I know, I've actually never had any fire extinguisher ever in any of my cars, until this month. So 1.4lbs is infinitely more!
Although in probably nearing 800k miles of personal driving, I wished that I had one exactly 0 times.
It is better than nothing!
I had an engine fire back in 1985 that almost cost us a 1981 Ford Mustang.
Fuel leak above the intake manifold.
That fire was put out with ice from an ice chest.(after all the beer was removed)
Mustang hood needed to be repainted afterwards.
I carry a fire extinguisher in ALL of my vehicle now.
Just an Element in the glovebox of the 2006 Mustang and 2011 Honda Odyssey.
Nice work! My only suggestion would be to maybe consider a bracket with two bands/clamps. An extinguisher could cause quite a headache if it came loose in a collision.
When it comes to car extinguishers, I agree that bigger is better and
anything
is better than nothing. All five cars have seat extinguishers and the four that have room also have five pounders in the trunks.
Those are really nice installs!
I'm living comfortably with my Normalcy Bias. I haven't needed one in the past, so I won't need one in the future. But I'm really pushing my boundaries with the thought that "
anything
is better than nothing".
Hi there - I have LHD car and installed the bracket on the passenger seat. From what I could tell, the bracket (and mounting points) look pretty much identical for both seats so it's really just personal preference.
You are going to waste more time trying to use that tiny extinguisher than to do what it needs to be done without it. I wrote this before but seems you guys are hung up on "better than nothing". When it comes to fire, every second counts and screwing around with that small bottle is a waste of time therefore, it is actually worst than nothing. It's like someone is drowning, you throw them a tennis ball and then you wait a bit to see if it helps. You are better off jumping in right away.
