Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
I originally had a broken hinge on my clamshell, but the root cause was the clamshell drive system.
Leading evidence: 'clamshell drive system' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'clamshell drive system' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace clam shell mechanism and hinges' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is there a write up on how to replace the clam shell mechanism and hinges. Local Indy wants $800. Is it a pain in the buy and Is it worth paying to have him do it or is it easy enough to do yourself? I did the hydraulic rams and that was super easy. I have a durametric that should be able to calibrate the top once replaced.

Replacing the components is relatively straightforward mechanically. From a cost standpoint, it depends on what components you need to replace. The bowden cable drive mechanism can be quite expensive. The hinges are cheaper (but if they are broken, why did they break? Figure that out too!)
If you are careful not to turn any components, and put it back together in the same "position" that you removed it, no calibration is needed. I was able to do this with success.
i have the drive mechanism that hooks to the motor on order along with 2 hinges. All from specialized German on eBay used of course. $500 total. The Indy is telling me its a 6 hour job. Is it as simple as unbolting old mechanism, hinges and clamshell, then just putting new one back in in reverse or was there a lot of swearing?
No, it wasn't that hard. It's a two-person job to remove (and later re-install) the clamshell, since is large and unwieldy. Just need a second pair of hands really, and maybe a soft blanket to protect the paint around the area. The nuts on the underside of the clamshell that affix the hinge mechanism were a bit tricky to see and reach, but not terribly difficult.
I'd recommend cleaning and re-greasing the "sliders" at the end of the cables, since they get gunked up.
Make sure you keep track of the position things were in when you removed them (the sliders, the rotation of the actuator motor and potentiometer). This will help ensure you don't need a recalibration.
Otherwise, just plenty of fasteners and such to keep track of. Not rocket science.
Thank you for the help.approximately how long did it take you to remove and replace? Ship wants to charge me 6 hours labor. If you did it in 3 maybe Ill tackle it myself. If its going to take 6 Ill just have them do it.
Sorry, I have no idea how long it took. I did this job in 2012. I'm lucky if I remember where I parked my car; this is a detail I have not retained. The dealer will probably do it faster than you, since they've done it before (probably). Good luck with whatever you decide.
