Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I was thinking about putting it on the side of the console and hooking up to the loose harness not being used inside.

Suggestion
Yes - I have a couple of adapters running off of the telephone connector that lives under the console carpet just ahead of the shifter (usually tucked under the airbag module if you go looking for it).
Use accessories without bending contacts and otherwise futzing around

Suggestion
FWIW, changing out the cig lighter socket on a 996.1 is pretty straightforward, and makes it a lot easier to use accessories without bending contacts and otherwise futzing around.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I recall not too long ago someone posted an adapter that fit into the cigarette lighter of a 996 with a USB adapter
I recall it wasn't that expensive. I need to replace my cell phonecharger and I thought that this would be an improvement
. I used the search button without success
Can someone remind me where I can get one
Autozone, Best Buy, or Amazon...
2-pack on Amazon for 8 bucks, Prime:

You can use a mid-sized flat-head screwdriver blade under the side contacts to gently bend them outward. This will make it fit more securely in the 996's lighter socket, which is apparently slightly larger than "normal" US-sized lighter sockets.
For a few bucks more get this one it's 2.1 amp so will charge your devices faster.

I was thinking about mounting one of these somewhere so it can be a switched outlet. Don't like the idea of keeping a adapter plugged since I don't drive the car much and afraid of draining the battery.

I was thinking about putting it on the side of the console and hooking up to the loose harness not being used inside.
Note: good idea and I have done this with mine. Please pay attention! We are talking about bending the contacts of the ADAPTER plug in....NOT the cigarette socket. Please do not stick a screwdriver into the socket. That is a really bad idea!
Yes - I have a couple of adapters running off of the telephone connector that lives under the console carpet just ahead of the shifter (usually tucked under the airbag module if you go looking for it). I run my radar detector and a micro USB adapter off of the switched 12v power the connector provides.
The connector is a four-conductor plug with nothing plugged into it (unless you happen to have an 80's vintage cell phone hard wired into your 996. The goofy corded handset hanging off the right side of the console would be a dead giveaway...).
I agree. After a few years of frustration with accessories falling out of the lighter socket I changed to the US spec version. Very easy to do especially if you break the old one apart instead of trying to preserve it. You're not going to use it ever again anyway.
