Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I used my own, since my goal was to understand how the 996's dynamics differed from my 986 (which was also fun on a skidpad, but much more predictable).
Leading evidence: 'Use own, since my goal was' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run don't hurt' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

And the roads are so tight here with blind corners, you're more likely to hit a tractor pulling out of a field, hit a horse, or a cyclist, or run wide and hit a tree LONG before the back end lets loose

I didn't know there was an option to use your own car for the Driving Experiences.
Use own porsche, unless i was contemplating a new one

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The porsche experience that is -
the half day which teaches you (me that is) how to control a 911 that is forced into oversteer, their skid pad, ice hill,
a driving course - I've never put ANY car into oversteer on purpose or by accident, so it should be fun.
Would you drive your 911 on this or hire one of theirs?
A 911 is a performance car so it should be fine of course! The tyres will be fine too since all the skidding is done on watered down slippery surfaces.....
When I was taught to drive, through Master Drive, they had a day dedicated to the skid pad. With an instructor in the car, they put our cars into a full on spin with us at the wheel and taught us how to stop the vehicle. It wasn't as extravagant as this, but it was pretty interesting. I'm really glad I was was taught this while learning how to drive. Let us know how it is when you do it!

Driving a 911 on a skid pad is awesome. I used my own, since my goal was to understand how the 996's dynamics differed from my 986 (which was also fun on a skidpad, but much more predictable). If you have PSM, turn it off and/or pull the fuse if they'll let you - otherwise, it's a bear to get the back end out. Drifting a circle in your own 996 is a remarkable amount of fun. Enjoy!
If you've ever been in an older 911 when it got sideways, you may be surprised at how predictable the 996 is when the back end starts to give up. It's not nearly the "pendulum" effect that snaps the rear end around. It will definitely still come around, but not as wildly.
Caveat - if you're worried about type 1 over-revs, you may want to use their car. When the back end lets loose and the tires are spinning, keeping off the rev limiter is near impossible.
My C2 doesn't have PSM (sadly or luckily for this event). But it does have nice wide rear tyres!
My main purpose is to do some crazy driving.
I've never done any extreme driving as I have never been on a track and refuse to kill myself or others on a public road, so this will be great fun
Will do this in the next couple of months hopefully. will of course report back.
Not a big expert in getting a back end around, other than with trucks and the Jeep. When it's wet and slippery the 996 is fun to drift a bit, although it takes work with the tires I have on it. Didn't seem unpredictable and I didn't and haven't noticed much of a pendulum effect.
Sounds like fun.I'd be inclined to use my own Porsche, unless I was contemplating a new one. In that case, I'd drive theirs. I've done an Audi appreciation day( in a '02 TT) and it was a blast.
Agreed - Porsche has done a great job taming the 911 over the last few generations. Of course, the massive rear tires we run don't hurt...
Every once in a while I get the urge to find some 5-inch wide tires to slap on the back of the 911 or Corvette and go find a huge slab of blacktop...I think that would be a BLAST.

They do on a wet skidpad!
??? Yeah. So? It's harder to spin a 996 on a wet skidpad than it is to spin an early 911 on an autocross course. One of the reasons for this is the MASSIVE REAR TIRES WE RUN.
Please let me know why you disagree with this statement.
I just signed up for the Porsche Driving Experience at the new North American Porsche Headquarters in Atlanta. I travel to Atlanta somewhat regularly and am psyched to have a reason to go their and do something outside of work. Gonna use their car and signed up for the Carrera S experience. Can't wait!
They're building a Porsche Experience Center closer to me in Los Angeles as well, but that one doesn't open til next year.
=)
I have to admit though it did get out on me a bit more than I wanted, however not an expert and don't really do skids often, so that could have easily been my fault.
Seemed really easy to correct and again was pretty close to how the Jeep works and recovers. Speaking of, had a fun time in traffic last winter in the Jeep. Was going around 45-50 in decent traffic and hit some ice, back end went one way and another, then did it again half mile up. I can remeber cars giving me a bit more room after that, and I finally did put it into 4 wheel drive.
Well and keeping in mind these were corners and slow speeds. Losing it on a higher speed corner is another deal and not as correctable in (I'll argue) just about any car once it starts to get going and/or is past the point of no return.
fwiw with my tires I had a great oppertunity to throw the back end out on a country road when, with a car coming in the other lane, I had to really dig into this right hand corner - more than I thought - and was going a bit too fast. Turns out, at least in that situation, the tires held fine but my girl friend was holding on for dear life and I was pressed up against the window. So, in normal and even un-normal driving I'm going to reach my limit long before the car does - assuming I don't hit gravel or any poor road conditions.
Tried to get the back end to cut loose with my first 996 C4S on wet snow (empty parking lot); as I recall, all I could do is get the car to sorta slide sideways.
I would dearly love to go to one of these events however, and try one of their C2's. I had juuust enough experience with the back end going out on my 964 on ice, to know it was less than pleasant.
It's really fun to drift on all 4's when the conditions are right and no one is around to hit or hit you - at least with the Jeep or trucks. These cars may be a bit different since hitting the curb has more conquences.
=)
If you guys can't take the Porsche class, I suggest hooking up with your local PCA* chapter and do the AutoX school. It should cover most of the same stuff. Lots of fun and a good way to learn about you and your car.
* Heretical as it may be, I liked my CCA (BMW) chapter's AutoX class better. At the PCA event they just threw you through small courses with an instructor to learn the principles and then let you do the full course in the after noon. The CCA course had actual class time and the wet skid pad as well as the practical course time.
the porsche driving course here is 1-1 tuition which is good. Heard the Audio course here is several people to a tutor.
I am doing more for the fun aspect TBH.
To accidentally lose the back end on a UK road, you'd have to be driving stupidly fast. And the roads are so tight here with blind corners, you're more likely to hit a tractor pulling out of a field, hit a horse, or a cyclist, or run wide and hit a tree LONG before the back end lets loose
(unless of course, there is sheet ice, horse ****, a car has dumped its oil, etc)
Got an email back from Porsche - you basically choose which parts of the track you want to work on - they will tailor the morning to your requests or needs
I guess you're looking at one of the Driving Experiences rather than the Sport Driving School that takes place in Birmingham. I didn't know there was an option to use your own car for the Driving Experiences.
