I remember seeing "used" 996 turbos going for $50k over list.

I can't get quite used to saying M4 either - I don't know why BMW is changing their line up to be all things to all people, and I think it's going to bite them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just curious if anybody on here owns a 996 and is in their early twenties, as I am 22 and got my first Porsche at a young age. This being my second 996 and 4th Porsche I feel very lucky and proud to have been in the position to own them.
Bought mine at 25 - '04 996 C2 with an AeroKitII and some other performance mods.
Unfortunately being in Australia we dont get to enjoy the lower prices of 996's that the US does, if we did I would have bought one years ago.
I'm 33 now going to look at an 03 c4 tonight. Bought a brand new c6 convertible Vette off the lot at 24. Of course I was not married, no kids and made stupid amounts of money while living at home back then lol.
I was a ///M guy in my early 20s (and still am, I guess, just don't own one at the moment). I bought my first Porsche in my mid-late 30s earlier this year.
I think I'm 34 in December.
At 22 the car at some point would have found the ditch and/or another way of being crashed. A little more responsible now.
Hats off to younger people who enjoy these cars responsibly!
Ha. You sound like me. I always try to add an extra year. This of course doesn't make my wife happy as it means I try to add a year onto her too...
Oh there was nothing responsible about how I enjoyed the car at that age
Lots of luck and at least one instance I can point to Porsche engineers and say "Thank you sooo much". Thanks to the tech bubble I had way more money than sense back then. I have less money and slightly more sense now
I'm 23 and bought mine 4 months ago.
Enjoy responsibly? I get all the service done at RennShop in Santa Clara, I let it warm up properly every morning, keep the RPM's up once it's warm, wash/wax it often, etc.
Oh I also take it to the track and beat the hell out of it
EDIT: Yes, I feel fantastically lucky to be able to own this car. It's the ultimate drivers car. Always been a bmw/ M3 fan but they got soft.
24 here, got the 996.1 aero last May.
Other p cars:
04 ctt (lots of go fast stuff) - current winter car
04 ctt (low mileage) - sold for 996
06 cs - sold for ctt the first 1
86 951 (fast)
83 944
Then about 15 other cars scattered around (s8, s4, allroad) m.b c class, two jeeps, a Cooper s, I think that's the rest lol.
I was a M guy in my teens, I had two e46 M3's both gave me a ton of problems. Also owned a e39 m5 and e36 m3. I didn't own my cars very long as you can tell lol
I owned a 951 too and my previous 996 was a mk1 aero car and then my 1978 sc is the one I miss the most. I don't miss my 951 as it caught fire and scared the crap out of me haha
Awesome I was and am still an M fan too but that seems to be the trend here starting with BMW M cars and then being able to afford a Porsche makes you never look back
I wasn't terrible in my early 20's but in hindsight I would have taken advantage of a 911 and wrecked it somehow - well - and no back seat wouldn't have been as enjoyable...
After 30 I started forgetting my age, just didn't matter as much. But yep, 34 soon. Going to take a week off of work to celebrate.
That's so bizarre - I had an E34 M5, 2 E36 M3s and an E46 M3, and they were all damn reliable. Yes, one of the E36 M3s had the radiator neck give out while driving, but I immediately pulled over and had it towed to get replaced.
I think BMWs get a bad rap, just like Porsches and Audis do, because they're German and expensive, but most people I know have been done right by their BMWs. I wouldn't mind picking up an M4, but my wife and I are looking for a house, so that's out. House aside, I'm actively looking for a 2002tii that I can play with.
If anything, my old 560SL was a pain in the rear to keep on the road.
No, but thanks for the help. I just like responding to people that take the time to post on my thread. It doesn't benefit me at all to get a high post count.
The issues with the e46m3 I experienced was the SMG transmission, I know that's the wrong transmission to get. One of them had a vanos failure and blew the engine. Similar to the ims issue with our cars. But I actually think the vanos issue is just as common yet they don't get as bad as a reputation like the 996.
I had just bought an XK8 and the 911 was her dream car as a kid so we ordered it almost as soon as they were available. Had to wait 2 years for a C4 + Aero + Manual - Sunroof build slot (part limited availability and part bad history between the dealer and PCNA). These 991 guys have NO clue what waiting for your BTO car is all about...
Funny you mentioned that when I met my wife I was driving an older pickup truck. When we first started dating I left my car at home for about 10 dates before I finally showed up in it. During those 10 dates I didn't even offer to pay for drinks or food. I wanted to make sure she liked me not the $ She ended up sticking around
She loves her e90 and it's been good and reliable (I think we've had to do tires and oil out of pocket on it) in the 7 years we've had it so far. The 996 has also been far better than the "OMG German car!" horror stories too. I totaled it up a few years ago and including tires I think it came out to less than $1000 a year. It's been a few years since then so it's probably dropped further, but the tranny rebuild will bump that up again (but only one major issue in 15 years? no complaints here).
Passed a local dealer yesterday that had an M4 (I really hate saying that...) outside in the rain. Obviously it has to be a salvage title at this point so I'm sure you could get it for a steal
My bodyshop has a 2002tii on the lot for a customer that had him bring it in, but hasn't had him start to do anything. It's been there for over a year now and is in sad shape. I keep getting the shop owner to tell the owner I'm interested, but so far he's (car owner) never called me back. It's the e30iX that I'm really partial to though. Too bad they are buckets of rust at this point
2 years wow that would of discouraged me
I can't even get my gf to get excited about my Porsche she seems more interested in new kia's than my car haha
We looked at the 360 Modena too, but that wait list was longer than they would be building them unless you wanted to pay double the price...
We also talked to another dealer where the Sales Manager was a friend of a friend. He could have gotten it for us in a month but we quickly realized that meant he'd be stealing someone else's build slot and we weren't going to do that so we walked out.
I got lucky with her that's for sure. I was the point A to B car guy until the XK8 and 996 opened my eyes. She's the one that loved cars and was the one that did our oil changes too
Wow twice the price to get a car that will depreciate immensely sounds crazy to meet but yet again I don't have that kind of money. Glad the 996 opened your eyes your wife sounds like a keeper for sure
I'm 24 bought it a little under a year ago when I was 23. I'd say I'm in the responsible camp, I take care of it. But I also have fun with it of course.
The Modena was a damn sexy looking car (actually it's looks have aged well I think), but we weren't going to play that game. There were Porsche dealers doing the same kind of thing (though not doubling the price) at the time and people were buying all kinds of "rare" cars and immediately flipping them from big profits back then. I remember seeing "used" 996 turbos going for $50k over list.
I was driving a burgundy Ford Tempo with a rusted muffler and a chunked catalytic converter in my early 20's, a**hole.
Seriously, though - congrats on being in a position to drive a decent car at your age.
I bought mine at 26 in December.....absolutely love the car! Did quite a bit of preventative maintenance and scheduled services as well. Want a Cayman too sometime soon but that new 2015 Challenger does look nice
Got my 2000 c2 aero at the ripe ol age of 24.
I've always been broke as hell too.
Believe me I got no business driving around in a Porsche- but **** it!!! Life's too short!!
Really why a challenger that is a big step backwards in driving dynamics I rented a 2015 charger a couple days ago to go on a trip it was bland to say the least.
YOLO haha jk I think everyone deserves to drive around in a sports car to at least see what they're missing out on
even a miata I had a ton of fun in those and they can be had for a couple grand.

I can't get quite used to saying M4 either - I don't know why BMW is changing their line up to be all things to all people, and I think it's going to bite them. Hell, it may have already as Audi has made tremendous strides over the past couple of years.
I had an E30 325e as well - fun little car with plenty of torque. I wouldn't mind an E30 ix for a winter beater.
Anymore details on the tii? Year? How bad a shape is it in? Do you know what all needs to be done?
Got my 2003 C2 at 20. I own a COMRE development business and waited a long time to spend any of the money I had made, just to be sure we could self sustain the business and any future projects while I had a little fun
I have since also purchased a 2015 S550 (modern day Duesenberg IMO) and (most recent acquisition kept in California) a 2015 Audi S8 which is a lot of fun!
I too love the 355 Ferrari's and plan on picking up a coupe and convertible in the next 12-18 months (both 6-SPD) while they are in this $60-$70k price range. I have always dreamed about that car, think it is the most beautiful Ferrari of recent past, and also think it is a classic/collector car in the making.
Yeah it's ridiculous. Their "odd numbers are sedans and evens are coupes" made some (horrible) sense until they released that 4 door 6 series abomination...
It's a light blue and hasn't run for over a decade. From looking at the outside (I'm not going to ask him to let me crawl over a customer's without their permission) it is a good project car that will need a lot of loving work. The body seems good and no obvious rust, but the interior obviously had something living in it at some point and (as I said) it hasn't run in a long time.
Great to hear. I got 911 #1, a '68, in 1980 when I'd just turned 18. A screwy combination of engine parts to make it into a fake "S" led to me having to tear into it three months later. Which led to a mechanic job where they had an SCCA race car. Which led to me opening a Porsche/BMW shop when I graduated college. Which led to enough bucks to race a Scirocco, and time trial the now very modified 911. Which led to opening shop #2 as a diversion to law school. Now, 35 years later it's been a lifetime thing.
Funny that I had a 12 year old 911 when I was 18, and at 53 the newest of the fleet is......12 years old.
Ha. There wasn't anything left "68" when I was done with it. Was just another old, POS 911 with big flares and a big engine. Who knew! The one that got away was the '73 S that I sold for top dollar of $20K in 2000. Even the 140K mile RS America I could hardly find anyone to buy at $22K in 2011 would have been a keeper. (993s aren't going anywhere, no matter that they're both apart and irritate my wife to no end.)
