Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Do you have a total cost of the parts you replaced, be good to have a baseline figure for people to work from.
Leading evidence: 'Replace be good' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair attempts' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

This not only "sets the bar" But it also gives a baseline, parts etc, for other DIY engine repair attempts..

If I recall, the last significant repair I performed was a starter replacement on my aging Lexus LS400, that was back in 05).

Unrestrained profanity, a couple of gray hairs and a $100 Big-Sert repair kit later, it was fixed.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am finally done with the engine rebuild and am very grateful to the Rennlist.com community for their help. The research conducted was priceless. The best $17 I ever spent... I wanted to thank Jake, Macster and Ahsai in particular for their helpful advice. Every time they made a suggestion, it was like experiencing an epiphany.
I have a video clip on YouTube that summarizes the process. I didn't take the best looking pics as it wasn't really a priority for me, but if you can spare 11 minutes of your time, please take a look:

PS. Please be gentle with your criticism...first time using Microsoft MovieMaker. Watch it in 1080P and turn up your speakers

Congrats and thanks for sharing! I enjoyed the video and like the whole minute just listing out all the new parts used
Are those steel sleeves and did you opt for larger displacement?
Thanks. The short answer to your question is 'I don't know'. I can tell you that I spent a lot of time waiting for dealer parts to come in. I also believe that I spent more time cleaning every part, nut and bolt - than actually doing the work. I also made it a point to go extra slow just to soak up and appreciate the experience. Lastly, reading some stories online about these engines, i got obsessive and double or triple checked everything i did (manual text, torque settings, part numbers...).
My garage is not heated, so there were weekends where it was way too cold to work down there. Our winter in NY was brutal. Having said that, I also screwed up a few times and was set back a few weekends by breaking off a 50 mm pulley bolt inside the case and going thru about 10 cobalt drill bits to get it out, or joining the case halves together and then having to seperate them again because the IMS chain was snagged on the sprocket and the shaft would not align with the flange opening (Thanks to Jake for pointing that one out).
Thanks for taking the time to put the video together...very cool. Thanks for making the rest of us DIY'ers out there feel lame in comparison. Bravo!
I'd say you set the bar high - strong work.
Paul, I was down right pissed for an entire week! I tried to extract the bolt with an extractor, and it broke off inside. Subsequently, i had to drill around the broken product and accidentally ovaled the hole. These thoughts of ruining the case were going thru my mind for that whole week. Unrestrained profanity, a couple of gray hairs and a $100 Big-Sert repair kit later, it was fixed.
Thanks spruden. I know for a fact that by posting this video i will move more Rennlist members to take on this project. That is exactly what happened to me....If I would not have read the brilliantly documented posts by some of our members who did the rebuild by themselves, I would have been less compelled to do this project. Full disclosure: I am a 43 year old IT Director for a State agency. If I recall, the last significant repair I performed was a starter replacement on my aging Lexus LS400, that was back in 05).
Thank you Neil. When i get home, I will send you an itemized list of parts, quantities, vendors used, and cost. I will also include the cost for tools. The only thing i borrowed from my dads garage were the engine crane, large socket (I think it was 24mm) for the 3 chain tensioners, and specialized star like configuration socket for 1 bolt on the transmission. The rest was purchased from ebay, harbor freight, autozone and sears.
