Anyway - small shop, nice guys, drove home and installed my system.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Let's face it, I'm cheap. There's nothing I can do myself that I will pay someone else to do, unless it makes absolute sense (see below).
I read up on gundo mods, vs Fister mods. I have a great local shop that I know can do good work, and another place a member went to that was cheap ($250).
I opted instead to have the Fister mod done. Why?
Fister is a short 30-40 min drive from me
I didn't like the look of the welds I had seen from other shops
Fister could have done their mod a number of ways but settled on the right way after much research
The value of a "Fister exhaust" with receipt will be greater than "went to Joe's mufflers" in the future
OK. So, I pulled my exhaust, after some difficulty (that long bolt is upside down for a reason, release instead at the triangular mounting plate folks).
Talked to Fister, I liked the look of their ceramic coating but it takes another week or so to get that done as they do them in batches.
Fister is a small shop, not the megawarehouse I imagined. My preference was to have my pipes modfied, but with a 5-7 day turnaround, I opted to take an already-done system.
Because of time, I passed on the ceramic coating, but the stock system is painted with "rattle can hi temp" paint. It also smells for a few days, so consider that when you drive a cabriolet.
Anyway - small shop, nice guys, drove home and installed my system. OMG. That sound.
If I blindfolded you, told you I had installed a $3000 Fabspeed system, you would say "dude, it's so worth it."
So back to the labor - it took me forever to figure out the orientation of the polished tips. They only charge $200 for removal/install so if you are considering a local install, just let them do it for crying out loud.
Your car, your choice. If you enjoy it, that's all that matters.
As for me, it's "interesting" but I'm long past the exhaust note being an indicator of "cool" despite the fact that I've got a 2014 Z51 Vette Stringray w/the performance exhaust that in "sport mode" sounds pretty aggressive.
Besides, I think that the exhaust note on my 2000 C4 Cab sounds pretty "cool" as it is.
Same here! Bought mine almost 14 years ago and it was one of the first mods I did. Darin is a great guy! Had the mufflers to me in FL in just a few days.
Took about 2 hours to get the first muffler off and about 15 minutes for the second.
As Wyovino said, I still smile every time she cranks up!
Great choice. I tried a different exhaust at first, and didn't like it, and ended up going with the Fister mufflers. Great product. I just changed the cats. Amazing sound from the M96.

I just got back from FD Motorsports, Darin Fister's shop. When I called Wednesday, I was visiting Santa Monica. Darin answered the phone. He said he could work me in this morning. He came in early. On Thursday I took the long way up the PCH through Big Sur. Had to do it. His shop is right next door to a Holiday Inn Express. Spent the night. Darin installed his modded pair of mufflers, and mine were good for the core exchange. He's a great guy, no bs about him. I just got back to my place in the AZ desert, about 530 more miles. What a great road trip!
A YouTube guy’s wife said it best, “It’s a little more growly, but not overly growly, like not douchebaggy”. When I got my 996 at the beginning of the year, I was disappointed in the sound. I rode motorcycles most of my life, and getting the 996 was my concession to aging. I've had too many close calls. I told myself the closest thing to a motorcycle on four wheels would be an old 911 (that I could afford), but the sound wasn't right. Now the sound is right! If you don't get on it you hardly notice the difference. But when you do! I listened to Chet Baker in New York on the freeway coming home doing a constant 75 mph. Like it was still stock.
Many thumbs up.
Not a peep out of these cars behind me when I stopped at In-N-Out:
