I installed the PCCM+ on my 2004 MOST car and not only ZERO regrets but in many ways has made the car relevant again.

Suggestion
Checking those boxes changes what brackets and extra cables they throw in that typically you would have to hunt down and buy from Porsche on your own.

Suggestion
The only time I've had that happen in relation to my PCCM is when I had to disconnect the battery to install it, which would be true of any head unit.

Suggestion
Actually, the PCCM is resetting the on-board computer.

Suggestion
The only thing that comes to mind is that those had integration between the cluster and the head unit, and there might be a bug in the PCCM that sends the reset signal to the cluster.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As for installing in an early car, I'm still not clear on what the trouble has been.
Has anyone installed the PCCM+ and regretted the decision? When I bought my car a year ago I thought it would be my first upgrade. But after reading some threads on this forum on the positives of the original retro look it gave me pause. Now I'm starting to rethink it. Thoughts?
If I had a MOST base car like your C4S in the avatar picture, then I would go with the PCCM+ and retain all the factory fiber optic setup. However, if I had the analog "HIFI" option (pre-2003), I probably just keep the CDR-220 setup. Porsche hasn't really provided much instruction on how to install the new PCCM+ into those cars. These are cars that required line level output from the YELLOW plug to an analog HAES or Nokia amplifier in the frunk. Now, if you have the base analog system without the frunk amp, then the PCCM+ will work because it offers speaker level output at the head unit.
I have an '09 C2 cab and had my local Porsche dealer install the PCCM+. It's nice. The maps are super high quality and the ability to use my phone is a plus. I had them install the USB/line input box in the glove box and bought an aftermarket dongle that allows me to connect my phone wirelessly. which is a major upgrade over having the box visible and blocking the cubby below the unit, plus wireless carplay. I would not say i regret it in the '02.
i also have an early build (3/98) MY99 coupe with original ambers and factory 408s. I considered a PCCM+ but ultimately decided to keep the retro vibes in tact of the first water cooled 911 off the line in Zuffenhausen. I briefly considered the single DIN PCCM but a P-car buddy of mine convinced me to leave it stock.
I had PCCM+ installed on my MOST based Targa and have zero regrets. CAI did a great job on integrating the USB hub into the batwing and looks sweet. I'd agree it seems best suited from an installation perspective on the MOST cars. If you go in understanding it's feature limitations (no back-up camera or wireless carplay) and determine they aren't deal breakers than I'd expect very few would regret the decision. It is expensive compared to aftermarket solutions, however, it has solid performance and it looks 100% like it belongs....which was #1 factor for me.
I installed the PCCM+ on my 2004 MOST car and not only ZERO regrets but in many ways has made the car relevant again. Absolutely love it.
There are little things around the edges that I'd like to improve on - microphone placement/integration; backup camera; native wireless carplay (though the dongle works pretty well). But there's always something.
Just so you know, you can have the head unit itself be the microphone and not use the external one. People that have done this find that it is clearer than using the external microphone. Try it just go into settings and change it!
I have one in my MOST 2004 Boxster SE and my analog 2001 Turbo. I installed both myself and I am very happy with them. They look like they belong. They dont look like an aftermarket radio. The fonts and controls and (almost) lighting match the rest of the car. CarPlay is responsive. I wish the head unit started up a little quicker but we deal with that with aftermarket ones, too. I know they are pricier than comparable aftermarket radios but I like how nicely integrated they look.
We have no problem spending extra money for N-spec tires. I didnt have any problem with something the extra money for official Porsche audio upgrades. Twice! 😃
Eventually I will get one just to modernize the interior. The PCCM just looks right. But after 20 years, I still barely use the radio and every year put off buying the PCCM and use the money for something else on the car.
When I get in my car, I put the windows down and listen to the sounds of the intake, exhaust and for any odd noises. Don't know why, but it's enjoyable and never think about the radio. But yeah, someday I will do the PCCM.
No regrets whatsoever. Did the install myself in less than 5 hours. Truly plug n play on 2003+ vehicles with MOST.
I added the Ottocast U2 -Air wireless dongle and hid it behind the unit...works flawlessly and connects about as fast as the factory wireless CarPlay on my 2022 MINI JCW.
I want to add a backup camera when I upgrade my head unit (I back into my garage which is a bit of a tight fit with the tool chests I have behind where I park that I cannot see when backing in) and the PCCM+ does not support cameras from my understanding, so that eliminates its for me. I know I can get a much cheaper alternative, I just have to work out the MOST issue with an adaptor or rewire the car
I really like the pccm Plus dual-din. installed I did it myself and very little time my system is pre most 2001 Hi-Fi with the amp in the front. Like others have mentioned I wish it had facilities for backup camera and wireless AirPlay or Android auto but it looks great and it sounds good even with the original AMP all I did was upgrade the speakers in the dash and in the rear seats, sounds fantastic. I got the maps SD card upgrade. I haven't really used it much because I have Android auto but it will probably pay for itself doing tours in the mountains and stuff where your phone signals weak. Just don't lose that little SD card.
No regrets here either. Although, my 2002 non-MOST Bose amped car did run into installation issues; it was ultimately resolved with a simple adapter. Porsche really has dropped the ball a bit with providing instructions (and adapters/ parts) to cover that type of install.
Now, with everything working, and wireless android auto (via a dongle attached to the media box in the glove box -- in my case this one:
https://www.aawireless.io/
) its just been brilliant -- my only regret is that i didn't get it sooner.
That said its not the most impressive head unit out there, by any stretch, but it meets all my expectations, and looks like it belongs in the car.
The tried and true low tech solution to that is to hang a tennis ball in the garage so that it touches your window where you want to stop. Or you can install a parking strip on the floor and back in until your tires bump it. Either won't help you park anywhere ELSE of course, but for the home garage its a no brainer.
Its been great for me, but only because the 996 has been my only car for almost 2 years now. I've been dailying it for that entire time, and having nav independent of my phone on the screen has generally been pleasant. What I will say is that its not worth the asking price Porsche puts on it. If you can find it for ~1200 USD or less and self-install, then go for it. Anything more than that and the 3rd party options start to look a lot more compelling.
As for installing in an early car, I'm still not clear on what the trouble has been. It was very straightforward to install on my 996 with DSP. The only extra step is that you have to ground a pin on the amp, and so far as I know that only applies to cars that had DSP and/or PCM1.
as i posted previously, I do not have the PCCM+ installed in my car (yet), but I see posts repeating themselves with regards to installation issues in that model or the other.
so anyone considering getting one, just make sure you order the correct model that will fit your car. the PCCM+ apparently comes in more then one flavor.
This is Suncoast bundling other stuff in, there is only one PCCM part number from Porsche for each country its sold in. Checking those boxes changes what brackets and extra cables they throw in that typically you would have to hunt down and buy from Porsche on your own. Again this is meant to be a dealer install item, so they make it a huge pain to do it yourself by not including everything in the box.
Am I missing something about the trip odometer resets? The only time I've had that happen in relation to my PCCM is when I had to disconnect the battery to install it, which would be true of any head unit.
Since installing the PCCM+, my trip odometer / computer randomly resets itself. And it's truly random - yesterday I was just driving on the highway and watched it reset to 0.0.
If you're looking for a single-din solution that matches OEM lighting, is high quality and has bluetooth/usb, I would suggest you check out the Continental TR7412UB-OR.

Weird. Did your car have factory PCM? The only thing that comes to mind is that those had integration between the cluster and the head unit, and there might be a bug in the PCCM that sends the reset signal to the cluster. \
Personally I can say I've not had that issue at all with my car, which is a 1999 w/ Nokia DSP but w/o PCM.

Lucky. My garage is a car cover
I know, silly to own a 996 with no garage to work on it in). I keep hoping I'll meet some saint here in Wilmington who has a massive space and room and a lift for an occasional visitor. Plus air tools.
I mean if you are going to freeload and dream, dream big. I'm going to try and get myself to the cars and coffee Saturday, who knows. Maybe my knight in shining armor is out there.
Back to backup cameras though, yeah it sucks the PCCM does not have, I miss having one from my previous daily. But I love the PCCM+ it looks so good in the dash. And I installed it myself, so I get a little sense of self-worth whenever I see it. I've not had any odo resets but clearly it is a known issue w some cars.
