Suggestion

The system uses about 5 gal so a gal short on a refill without a vacuum fill tool is not uncommon.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Purchased a 911 C4 that had a new motor installed (2004 in a 2003 body) would the mechanics put new hoses to coolant systems or use what was in place? Getting a light on dash that coolant is low and reservoir was below minimum. I filled it up and drove for 1/2 hour. Engine does not overheat, no white smoke, oil is good color/viscosity. Reservoir tank was back below min when I stopped driving after 30 mins. any ideas what is going on?

POST 2Original post

It could just be air in the system. That would be the best scenario. Fill it to max again and drive it with the bail up for awhile. Hopefully that's all it is.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

When I filled it at first it took 1/2 gallon of antifreeze. I refilled it and used the remaining antifreeze. It now has 1 gallon that I added. Would air pocket create that much of a lack of coolant? Lastly, I will take it out for a spin.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 18253375

Coolant capacity is 5 to 6 gallons. It's possible, but if it is just air in the system then whoever filled it last did an abominable job.

POST 5Original post

Yes. The system uses about 5 gal so a gal short on a refill without a vacuum fill tool is not uncommon. Also pull the dip stick jic and make sure its not milky.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I did check oil dipstick. Oil is not milky. Also no white smoke from tailpipe which would indicate coolant in head gasket. Ill run it around to see if it is just burping. Engine was replaced March of 2021, I would think of any biting would occur it would have happened by now. Previous owner drove 5k miles since new engine installed.

POST 7Original post

The other possibility is a cracked coolant tank. When they start to fail they only leak under pressure so u may not see a leak. They also leak onto the exhaust and it steams off. Many threads on this.

POST 8Original post

There are also lots of hoses/places to leak coolant. Get it up to temp then bring it home and park on a clean floor/ground. If its a leak, itll rear its ugly little head
