The first thing I did once I signed the paperwork (and it was technically mine) was walk out and remove the front bracket and filled the holes with BumperPlugs.

Funny thing is after I ordered, received and installed I found the same thing in the frunk!

I run front plates here in TX because I can't be bothered with all of the different enforcement policies.

Policies differ from city to city and that's why I run a tow-hook adapter front plate.

The one at the top is what I used, pricey for what it is and not the sturdiest (this is my second).

Suggestion
Use Leading Edge Tape on the bumper before install, its like clear bra but comes in a roll, very thick clear plastic,, originally made for protecting the leading edge of helicopter and propeller blades.

So, I live in a state that requires a front license plate. The front bumper only has the holes for the European size plate.
I'm not gonna drill holes in the bumper. I've found a couple adapters online for the US sized plate, but I can't imagine they look very appealing.
Is there a decent solution? Thanks.
There are guys that use the tow hook hole. The good thing about these is that it's really easy to remove. I don't know why, if this is a US car, the holes would be only for the European plate. My car came from California with two square holes that the Porsche OEM license plate holder attached to perfectly. The one at the top is what I used, pricey for what it is and not the sturdiest (this is my second).

You might and message this seller to see where he got his. Multiple pix in the gallery to see the finished product and looks like it uses the tow hook hole mentioned above...

NJ requires front plate. i keep mine on the passenger floor. i've passed numerous NJ police over the past 4 months and +5k miles i've driven and haven't been stopped once. if i do get stopped i plan on showing the plate and saying i just had front bumper touched up and haven't replaced it yet or some such story. if i ever get pulled over for speeding i hope it will give the officer an alternative ticket to write me, failure to display plate vs speeding. Just my thoughts on the matter.
You can get cheap ones on eBay! $ 20. Try it if you don't like it was only $20 (The tow hook one) I bought this one it works perfect.

Not crazy about the off-center look...I wonder if I got something like this and painted it the same color as the car...

Porsche has a bracket for US size plates:
996 701 107 00
There is the part the plate mounts to and some spacers to adjust for the curve of the bumper (996 701 107 00 / 986 701 801 00 / 986 701 802 00).
Here is one example on ebay:

Ok, but that looks like you'll need to drill new holes in the bumper cover. The holes in the bumper now are probably the standard square holes that are too large to mount the bracket at that link. Not the biggest deal, since the license is a permanent addition.
Why not this?

Based on your headlight resto, it's a easy mod. Same laws here. I just pull it out of the frunk if asked. Why spoil the look?😎
Exactly
how
required? They're compulsory here in CA, and a lot of folks will tell you that they get dinged for not having them, but I do not run them on either the 996 or my Corvette and haven't since...2005?
LEOs could easily use that as a reason to pull me over but never have...and on the few occasions I have been pulled over, I have not been cited for a missing front plate.
You might want to ask around locally and find out how aggressively LEOs in your area enforce this before you take the screw gun to the bumper cover. (And if you're already in the know, I'm sorry for any presumptuousness implied by the suggestion).
No, I really don't know how closely it's enforced in my immediate area. I may just keep it in the car for a while and see what happens.
Regardless, I won't be drilling holes in the bumper.
None of my cars have a front plate. I've only been pulled over once and just got
a 'fix-it' ticket. All I had to do was put the front
plate
on, take the car to a CHP office for inspection and pay a $15.00 administrative fee. I took it back off when I got home. This was about ten years ago.
In the last year or so I started carrying a fake email with my registration and insurance in each car, showing the bracket is on order. I try to keep the fake emails current but with only mixed success.
No requirement for a front plate where I live. If I had to mount one, the "strong magnets inside the bumper" idea looks good.
Simpler would be a form-fitting plastic bracket attached to the bumper with 3M VHB double-sticky tape. This stuff is very strong, but can (with some trouble) be cleanly removed, leaving no trace.
In the NW,, the missing plate is usually a "bonus" ticket when you get tagged for something else,, and in my local area its a
big addon,, can be 400 bucks, Oregon no longer allows "fixit" tickets for the most part,, and the local cities add their own fun.
Washington has some twists as well.
Of course there is the "construction zone" double or nothing play as well.
I keep mine in the frunk on the tow hook adapter. I figure I'll just say I had the car towed due to a flat tire. I may fail to mention that was last year.
Rennline ( a Rennlist sponsor IIRC) sells them. I got mine from a link on this forum but can't remember what brand. Yes it is off center and the plate is angled as well. But being cheap I would rather avoid a ticket. Front plates are required here a MO and my while got ticketed in her DD shortly after we moved here years ago.
I think that's pretty much how it works around here but If a cop is looking for a reason to pull you over, no front plate is handing it to them on a silver platter.
I searched for a post on a BMW board that I'm on and my last ticket was actually closer to eleven years ago. According to my comments back then, I could have a gotten a 'fix-it' or an 'infraction'. The difference being a $10.00 fee versus a $168.00 fine. I can't say whether the laws are still the same but I'm going to go out on a limb and say if they are, the fee and fine amounts have gone up considerably.
The CHP officer that signed off my ticket said that if when pulled over, you're a jerk, you'll probably get the higher fine version.
cds is correct. The ordering reference gets you the two blocks and the plate holder, screws and plastic expander nuts. Plate holder and blocks screw into an expander nut that fits in the two square holes in the bumper. The US size plates screws to the plate holder. No need to drill bigger holes. One caution make sure the blocks are in the upright position(there is an arrow for up) and properly seated on the backside of the plate holder or the screws will be to short to properly expanded the plastic nuts that grip the bumper cover. I use this arrangement cause I really don't want to be pulled over for something like no front plates.
Could you please post a picture of the front of your car with a good view of the adapter?
Thanks.
Edited to add - my searches for that part number return some very different products. Are you referring to something like this:
https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_In...hoCUrUQAvD_BwE
Or something like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-911...ss!05445!US!-1
No can do as it is in Georgia getting a HAMMER installed in the engine compartment! Sorry. The kit is what Porsche designed for a front plate mount for our cars. It looks good, utilizes the two square holes already in your front bumper cover and keeps the cops from giving you sideways glances or worse.
Totally your choice.
Update:
Pelican Parts: nope.
Ebay
: yes. However, my kit came with the screws.
Funny thing is after I ordered, received and installed I found the same thing in the frunk!
My bad the mounting blocks have the expanding nuts moulded into the back of them. Been a long time since I messed with them!
That's the one. Don't remember any washers, but that is the kit. Note that there is a left and right mounting block which is important for proper flush mounting.
Finally measured things...the plate is 12" wide, and the holes in the front bumper are 10" apart.
So, I should be able to use the Porsche adapter, apparently without any black plastic showing on either side of the plate.
I believe the Porsche plate kit on my car does NOT show any black plastic outside of the license plate. It does come right to the edge of the license plate though. Sorry didn't understand your concerns earlier. Found an old pic of my car that shows plate from quarter view.
Texas requires a front plate but I don't keep one on my 996, and in fact, am having the two front holes filled in/painted since the front bumper is already getting painted. Never been hassled for it.
I pretty much do the same thing except I don't even keep the front tag in the car. The first thing I did once I signed the paperwork (and it was technically mine) was walk out and remove the front bracket and filled the holes with BumperPlugs. Have not had a single issue yet and even have both front windows tinted which is a no-no and still haven't had an issue. I see tons of modern Porsche's (Macans, Caynenes, etc) in NJ without front tags.
When I lived in CA, I got popped for lack of a front plate in my 2005 Mustang GT.
I was driving quickly on my way to SFO, and the CHP decided to try and get me for speeding. There was a lot of traffic and I saw him weaving through to catch up to me, so I slowed down to the limit, pretty close to my intended exit for off-site parking anyhow. As he slowly drove near me, and then past me, he looked back, saw my missing plates, and pulled me over.
So NOT having plates, in my opinion, is a good way of allowing them to pull you over when they don't like you for some reason, and just need any reason at all in order to get you with something.
I run front plates here in TX because I can't be bothered with all of the different enforcement policies. Some small towns like to generate revenue. State troopers tend to be 100% about public safety and are quite friendly and not at all "revenue generating" in my experience. My city also has very good police who seem to be "safety first, tickets maybe" while the town next door has motorcycle cops whose primary job is revenue generation.
No disrespect to Law Enforcement. Policies differ from city to city and that's why I run a tow-hook adapter front plate.
Dont know if this helps, just came across your thread and I went through a similar search and I came up with the Skene design bracket because I like the plate centered and I didnt want to put any holes in the bumper. I didnt buy theirs, but made my own similar since I had the materials on hand.
Commercial bracket
Mine
Has anybody every taken a look at the front bumper after having used the Porsche adapter? The spacers are hard plastic - I've got a feeling they're gonna mar the paint.
Won't matter to me, but if the next owner doesn't want/need a front plate, there may be scratches where the plate once was.
I have them on both of my 996 and they don't mar the paint in normal use. Now if you go drive into something and hit plate first, you may have a different result.
Use Leading Edge Tape on the bumper before install, its like clear bra but comes in a roll, very thick clear plastic,, originally made for protecting the leading edge of helicopter and propeller blades. 20 bucks a roll give or take.. more the wider you buy.
Is this something you've actually done, or a recommendation?
The adapter mounts are designed to be flush on the bumper. I don't know if they would work properly w/ something under them.
I'm fairly certain I have them oriented as they should be, although I can experiment.
Anybody know if the Boxster bumper is identical to the 911? These mounts supposedly fit both, but I'm wondering if they should have made different parts and just got lazy...
Here are a couple more pix. I believe this orientation is correct, as the forward facing tabs mate with the bracket. Also, this position matches the contour of the bumper best.
I believe those are on upside down. There should be an "arrow" molded in each block for "up". When properly installed with the backing plate the whole assembly should tip out just a bit on the top side. See the pic of my car in post #33.
Today i stopped by a Car show in NJ sponsored by county prosecutors office. All traffic and parking was directed by on and off duty police/state police. I stopped and asked for parking directions and info on the show. Not a single person asked where my required front plate was.
I have the Porsche bracket but I have not been able to find screws that are short enough not to poke into the bumper paint when the wind pushes against it driving.. It looks lousy but I zipped tide for now. I'll get back to later.
I just mounted the craven tow hitch on my 12 CTT...the parking sensors go haywire (was already struggling with them on my bike rack, solutions welcome)
I’m going to return it. Get some black thick zip ties and 1/2 inches rubber washers and just mount under the LCA, will look like its floating and the rubber washers should take care of any rattles.
am I crazy?
Also any suggestions on Thule tow hitch bike carrier and parking sensor?
An alternative approach to Front License Plate mounting
Many years ago, a Lotus 7 where I worked had its front license plate mounted directly on the radiator. This was a CA black plate and the owner had dremeled out all the black portion of the front license plate, removing 90% of the plate. So much of the plate wasn't there that the remaining didn't reduce the airflow to the radiator by more than a few %. The Yellow numbers were visible from directly in front of the car, which sufficed to make it legal.
If you have a 911 without a 3rd (Center) radiator, try stuffing it in the center section. If it can be seen from the front, it should be legal, but you might want to check your state's DMV regulations to be sure.
