When I hear something running all "lumpy" I think back to the time when I was 15, and made a huge mistake by running too much cam.

997S and 996TT also work and could potentially be less money net of selling yours, but I always find used cars to require maintenance to get them up to where you know your old car was.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have 2003 996.2 C4S coupe with around 133,000 km (83,000 miles), in Toronto. The car is fantastic, with the PSE option. Been in long term ownership, and plan to continue. I was thinking about the X51 power kit, but my dealer says they are no longer available. I am considering boring the car. Have read there are 3.8l, 3.9l and 4.0l options (but it appears most are for GT3 motors). Has anyone done something like this? I don't want to re-invent the wheel. Looking for a factory quality naturally aspirated boost to power, from an experienced, reliable and trusted source, preferably in the Toronto area. Also, if anyone has a lead on an X51 power kit, please drop me a note.

POST 2Original post

I don't know anything about what is available in Toronto or Canada. Send your car to Jake Raby at Flat Six Innovations (FSI), write him a blank check and wait a year. Best way to go IMHO.

POST 4Original post

Turn3 In Langley, BC does a package of going 3.4 to 3.8, or 3.6 to 4.0. I'm picking up my new 3.8L C2 in two weeks, and I can't be more excited. With the currency exchange right now, it's probably still cheaper to ship/drive to BC and ship/drive back. Feel free to PM me. -Matt

POST 5Original post

I am not sure about shops in Toronto, but I think there is a shop in Calgary (Alpine Autowerks) that partners with Hartech for their M96/M97 cylinder replacements, but I have not had any experience with them in any capacity. When I needed my engine rebuilt to a 4.0L several years ago, I shipped it off to Jake @ FSI and have nothing but great things to say about the experience. However the exchange rate was a bit more favorable then, than it is now. If you have any questions about the experience at all or about the end result, feel free to PM me.

POST 6Original post

Yep Hartech has the link on their web page.. FWIW when I called the guys in Canada, it was roughly 20K Canadian for a full r&r&r ,, thats been about 5 months ago.

POST 7Original post

If you are serious, you should sell your running engine to someone who needs one, and take their core in trade. Then build your monster.

POST 8Original post

Is the 3.6 not powerful enough? The X51 will be near impossible to find. IMO why not add some upgrades like an exhaust system and a Numeric racing shifter and cables and enjoy...

POST 9Original post

Do a cross post in the canadian section...zookie, pongo and jumper have all done engine work to their c4s's ( upgrades and replacements). Some in the US and some in town. Not sure of anyone local that does that kind of work though.

There is no replacement for displacement, Here's my rebuild thread link : https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...6-rebuild.html

POST 11Original post

OP: I would take my 3.8 FSI Stage 1 over an X51 any day. I'm just sayin'

POST 12 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks - some good leads and I will follow up to see which option works best for me

POST 13Original post

I would consider test driving a turbo and see how you like it. Thats immediate and quick, no wait time to go from 300HP to over 400HP, and the cost into that car will stay mostly in equity. The turbos probably wont depreciate too much. Otherwise FSI engine would be my first choice. Last choice, an LS conversion.

POST 14Original post

I have to say go FSI. The Stage 1 Street Performer will get you a good bump in power, an optimized torque curve, and of course unbeatable reliability for the m96. If you are budgeting enough to go beyond stage 1, even better. You can uninstall and reinstall your own engine if you want to go that route or just send them the car. You also benefit from their very comprehensive testing. The engine testing is what convinced me that FSI was the way to go since I was originally considering an LN rebuild. If you can be without your car for a while I would highly recommend. Otherwise, I have heard excellent things about both Turn3 and Alpine Autowerks, though they are not in Ontario. 997S and 996TT also work and could potentially be less money net of selling yours, but I always find used cars to require maintenance to get them up to where you know your old car was. The best car is the one you know best.

POST 16Original post

I took a different route after blowing my '03 C4S's 3.6L after ~75 track days. Had it rebuilt by Loren Beggs at 911 Design near Ontario, CA, who bored it out to 4.0L and added a deep sump and a center radiator. This was about 3 years ago. Passing GT3's never gets old in my "sleeper" 996 :-)

POST 17Original post

If you're really interested in an X51, this is the engine from my totalled 40th AE. 26K miles, IMS solution, every oil analysis clean. No zone 2 overrevs, but I added a few zone 1s! Not me but the wreckers who bought my car. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2004-Porsch...wAAOSwURBfBKil

POST 18Original post

Or this... https://www.ebay.com/itm/2002-2003-2....c100047.m2108 What kind of budget you working with, that's a big part of the equation!

There are plenty of other choices other than Jake to convert the 3.6 into a higher displacement unit. You just have to have a shop that is well versed in engine work and specifically Porsche engines to make it happen. It doesn't make sense to ship the car to Jake if you have plenty of more local choices. It's going to take time either way though so patience and research is rewarded with quality outcomes. I went to a 4L and could not be happier. It's basically a 718 GT4 in a 996 body.

POST 20Original post

This year our Canadian business has exploded. It was a little slower during the early part of spring due to COVID19, but in the last month we have seen the "spring bump" that always happens with Canadian purchasers come on strong. We do a ton of Canadian work, and have several options from having the whole car shipped, to having one of a few different installers to choose from to facilitate the removal, and replacement of the engine. That's my "Premier program" and it works very well for those who do not wish to ship the car. Shipping the engine is a well defined process that we handle for you. Yep, there are other choices than my program. You can trust that all of those people are busy wondering how they can do the job as well as we can, how we make so much more power, and why we don't have the problems that they do upon completion.

POST 21Original post

One thing I cannot stop thinking about is the sound of a good cam. These stage 1 and such engine rebuilds are awesome, but with a good exhaust, for a hot rod, Id want that cam sound, which probably requires the head work to be done on a higher stage engine.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 16761945

You won't get that here.. I only build engines that idle perfectly smooth at 1,000 RPM. When I hear something running all "lumpy" I think back to the time when I was 15, and made a huge mistake by running too much cam. The engine didn't do anything well, and couldn't be tuned. When I hear that sound from any engine with less than 13:1 CR I just think that the guy that built it had no freaking idea what he was doing. My current NA record with an M9X is 480 HP at the flywheel, on 93 octane, from one of my R43 engines. It idled just as smoothly as stock, and you couldn't even tell it was "built". If you want something that lopes around, then you need a Chevy "Cammerra" and not a "Carrera".
