Leading evidence: 'but i digress' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'but i digress' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace bulb' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Anyway, here's what you do: (this works for changing bulbs too - getting the fixture apart to change the bulbs is self explanatory.

Replace bulbs, be very careful both removing it and reinstalling

If yours isn't broken and you just need to replace bulbs, BE VERY CAREFUL both removing it and reinstalling!
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just replaced my Third Brake Light (the one just below the rear window and just above the spoiler/rear deck). It was broken on the right side/end and just kind of jammed in place, upside down and backwards. I looked through the forums (Here, Renntech and 6speedonline) and had a hard time finding any relevant information regarding either removal or install. I did find one post, but it talked about removing the carpeting below the rear window, and two screws between the spoiler and the third brake light...NONE OF WHICH NEEDS TO BE DONE. I'm so happy I sat on it for a couple days and didn't follow the instructions that I had found... Anyway, here's what you do: (this works for changing bulbs too - getting the fixture apart to change the bulbs is self explanatory. Once again though, be careful not to break the plastic).
1) *On the right side of the light unit there's a little "hatch" (plastic cover). There's a gap at the very end that you can fit a small flat bladed screw driver into. Remove this cover by prying up on the end with the gap.
2) Under the cover you'll see a white plastic rotary clip with a slot in the middle.
3) Insert a flat bladed screw driver into the slot and turn counter clockwise. This will release the light fixture.
4) You may have to pry the fixture out a little bit if the gasket material has stuck to the surrounding metal. Pull the fixture out slightly toward the back of the car and then slide it to the right - this will release a hook/clip at the other end of the fixture, and it'll be out.
5) The electrical connector has a press release type connector, so make sure you press it fully before you start tugging on the wires.
* In my case this end of the fixture was totally gone (hence my need to fix it). Judging by the design of the fixture and the condition of the replacement that I got, this seems like a fairly common breaking point. If yours isn't broken and you just need to replace bulbs, BE VERY CAREFUL both removing it and reinstalling! Good Luck, and I hope this helps someone out.
Good luck with it. Go slow and be gentle - old plastic breaks easy. Getting the fixture apart is very straight forward, but it's not "easy" as the plastic has become brittle over the years, and you will probably break one or more of the clips. A new fixture is a little over $100.00 from ECS Tuning if worse comes to worse

They also sell the bulbs for about a buck a piece. ** I was able to find a used fixture on Ebay for $30.00 shipped
This is trivial at best. Almost as easy as changing a bulb. Don't really see what the issue is but I digress.
If you're going to go through the trouble, might as well get the LED version. I'm quite surprised that Porsche didn't include the LED version to begin with considering I have had older BMW's that had LED 3rd brake lights and was 1/3 of the cost.
+1
Expect the plastic cover tabs to break at step 1.
The new LED is very much worth it and comes with a new cover.
+ 'side: That 3rd LED light illuminates much quicker than your incandescent stop lights. It is thereby safer for you and the curiousity-aroused driver behind you.
Hey guys. I bought the clear third brake light from "sportscarextras" off of eBay. It comes with a set of resistors to eliminate any "fast flashing" from the turn signals due to the resistance drop with my LED taillights and now third brake light.
The directions state to hook up one side of the resistor to the brake light and the other to ground. I haven't taken a look yet but how would I determine which wires I should hook up and where along that line I should connect it??
Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!
So you already had LED taillights? And now you're wondering if you need resistors for the 3rd brake light as well? I'm a bit cloudy on this.
If you already have resistors on your LED taillights, you may not need the additional resistor for the 3rd brake light. Try it first and see if your computer complains about it.
If you do get a bulb out error, you will need to splice in the resistor on your positive lead.
