IIRC from reading threads on the topic, some people used double sided tape and some used glue to attach them.

Another cool one I've seen is a guy who covered the entire light in vinyl and then used an exacto knife and cut out the circles.

I figured if I change my clear pumpkins to amber bulbs and rewire turning signals there I should be fine.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I found a very interesting car, would consider going to look at it.
However, it has headlight covers. How are these things attached? With a double stick adhesive tape? Or with some kind of melt-the-plastic in place and never-to-be-removed method?
Anyone know? I would want to remove them. Thanks!
IIRC from reading threads on the topic, some people used double sided tape and some used glue to attach them. The glue may ruin the headlights. The tape can likely be removed and use dental floss to get the covers off.
FWIW, when I was shopping to buy my 996, at first I liked the covers. Now I think they look goofy. But, they may grow on you. If you can't live with them, you could always try to swap headlights with someone who does want them. If that's a black car, then there's a better chance of finding a trade partner because that's a fairly common color and the general consensus is that the headlight covers look best on black cars.
For example, if you buy that car, I'd be willing to take those ugly rims off your hands in an even trade for the twists off my car. That's just the kind of guy I am.
BTW, car shopping at 3:16 am and back at it again this morning at 8:00 am - you got the bug bad right now. Not criticizing - just commenting. Been there done that myself!
Your avatar looks vaguely familiar as well.
I was going to sell the 951.....but it's so mint, and then I tuned it recently myself.....I just couldn't part with it. It has 280 HP and 290 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels at 15 PSI.
I'm thinking of keeping it for my son who is a junior in college. If you are interested, I made an ad for it, but then decided against selling it days later. I sold the 968 in a day.

That might help, there is little in description on attachment.
If you can remove the old ones I will buy them off you?
ask the seller how easy is to to reverse the procedure, they should know the answer as people might be reluctant to put them on without being able to easily take it off.
I have them and they were installed by a guy I know with windshield adhesive so they would be removable. I think silicon calk would also work. I love them, make the car look like a 911. I've volunteered how much I love them 1M times on this forum and it only draws ire from the other 996 owners. I answer them the same every time. There's a reason they were never on previous or post 911's: the market spoke. If you like them that's awesome. If you don't those covers are a solution. Another cool one I've seen is a guy who covered the entire light in vinyl and then used an exacto knife and cut out the circles.
you can get them painted one we order them for $80 (i think that is the difference between the unpainted ones)

I have been reading through our Highway act to see if I can legally use them. I figured if I change my clear pumpkins to amber bulbs and rewire turning signals there I should be fine. But missing DRL and fog. not sure how legal that is.
If you were dressing your Porsche up as a pirate for Halloween I think they look good. Beyond that I have no idea why people do not like the 996 headlights.
I cannot imagine how it can be legal to disable the front signal lights the car came with.
If you use the side marker lights as turn signals, at least half of the traffic around you will not see your signal and therefore not know your turning intentions.
This what our highway code says
"Turn Signal Lamps - At or near the front - 1 amber on each side of the vertical centerline, at the same height, and as far apart as practicable. "
So side markers would qualify. I think more people will see me turning now since the cars beside me will see where I am turning. That's where most accidents happen when you slam into the car driving in blind spot? Problem will be oncoming traffic. I need to hook it up and see how it looks. Might have to get extra front turn signals for front.
I think you may be asking for trouble with just having the sidemarkers act as your main turn signals that but do as you wish. Another option would be to mount small amber LED assemblies in your bumper grill. This way it looks stealth yet functions when it needs to.
Most of those headlight covers on Ebay are so cruddy your going to take them out of the box, look at them, and then go "no freakin way." There is a German company called Strosek Design that makes all sorts of mods for the 996 including headlight covers. They work but are expensive. And you will NEVER get the glue off the headlights. If you go this route make sure you get the appropriate (mark 1 versus mark 2) covers. Personally, since these headlights seem to **** off certain other 911 drivers, I'm looking for a way to draw more attention TO these lights, not away from them
I may be different to other owners in this regard.
These covers came on my car when I bought it. I go back and forth on whether I like them or not. I'm scared I'll ruin the lights trying to remove them, so they're more or less permanent in my mind.
I'm also afraid I would ruin the covers taking them off and then not like it without them...how's that for indecision?
You'd be ahead of the game here if you actually USED turn signals. Driving around my area you'd think they were optional components from the dealer that everyone decided not to buy!
This is one of my hot buttons.
I become very frustrated with the lack of turn signal usage.
It seems to get worse as time goes by.
I personally feel that drivers who do not use their signals are either oblivious to other drivers, self centered, lazy, rude, or any combination of these.
In any case, they are poor drivers. Turn signals are second only to brake lights in importance.
Sorry to hijack the thread here, lets get back to the headlight covers.
I think for the most part they look exactly like what they are - a cover over the stock headlight. An accessory.
The look from 100' is good. The look up close, not so much.
