I did use a VLR spray on the seals and it helped a lot.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hey all,
My time in porsche cars is limited to only one which was a first gen Cayenne Turbo. The car was nice, pretty quick, and had some cool tech but one of the biggest things that stood out to me was that the interior was pretty creaky, even compared to much lower-end newer cars. Having owned a 2018 Golf R which felt like it was made out of a solid piece of granite, I'd like to hear some thoughts as to what I might be getting myself into when looking at a 996. How creaky or "sloppy" feeling are the interiors of your cars? Did the Cayenne or possibly the specific Cayenne I happened to be driving reflect the early 2000s Porsche brand in general or do the 911s feel much more solid? Thanks.
Scott
Not trying to offend or anything like that I was just genuinely curious. My first new car purchase was only just over two years ago so I'm not entirely sure what to expect.
Hmm, mine is rock solid. Not a single squeak or creak. Only issue Ive had is the release pin on the fire extinguisher rattled so I rubber banded it down.
The main point about sounds while driving a 996, and about the 996 in general, is it's an endearing vehicle. Road and wind noise and rattles in other vehicles you're gritting your teeth, in this era of Porsche your soul is floating down the road and you don't hear it.
Depending on color, they do require touch up.
Colors like Savannah Beige or the Light Grey are a finish overlay on black parts.
You will find wear on cup holder release, parking brake and ignition switch bezel for sure.
They are well made, 73,000 miles and no rattles or broken parts, but if you zoom in, you can see parking brake handle in need of touch up.
Overall, very well made.
The hard top on my 03 C4 w/100K squeaks over some bumps, like a drain deflector in my entry to the driveway so there is about 4" of bump to climb over at an angle as I drive in,, but generally the thing is darn quiet from that perspective.
New to owning a 996. Mine is a 2001 cab. The hinges on the top squeaks like a small rodent. I find myself carrying small pieces of wood or foam to stick between the arms and hinges as a wedge. I have found all but one so far. Problem is I need to remember to remove them when I lower the top.
Ive had a 2017 GTI that I bought new and I now own a 2001 996 C2 coupe. The interior of my 996 feels very solid and surprisingly quiet. There is a slight rattle from one of the rear seats, but nothing overly irritating. I was very surprised by how tight everything feels in a 20 year old car. My 2004 Audi TT had far more rattles and felt cheaper overall
My 17 GTI developed a terrible rattle shortly after buying it. The dealership was no help and after a few months it just disappeared...
I have one rattle and it's from the door pull area, my car has the carbon interior option so I believe it's a tab that broke so the metal clip is just rattling. Toyota makes a felt strip kit for Lexus and it comes with various lengths, widths and thicknesses, I haven't ordered a kit in about 15yrs so hopefully they make it still.
Good question! My 21 year old Porsche 996 creaks from every corner of the car, seats are loose and collapsing, roof liner rattles, sun roof rattles, pedals squeaks, shifter clunks, door panels rattle, steering wheel sounds like a cheese grater, nothing is tight anywhere and it all rattles around. Do NOT buy a Porsche 996. Do NOT own a 996. You must run away now and stop thinking about it. The 996 has a sloppy interior...worse than a used 80's ford escort. The interior is creaky, sloppy and inferior to all other 20 year old cars, other than VW's. Stick with your VW. Do not buy an inferior Porsche 996. You can thank me later.
Got a 4/98 build date 996.1 and it creaks and rattles like a motherf....r.
Its gotten increasingly worse since moving to the new neighborhood, the roads around here are punishing (potholes, bumps, cracks).
Ill eventually have to tear down the interior and redo everything.
When I had a stock suspension it was pretty good. I moved to moonball front top mounts and it got worse. But that is the beauty of the car, it is now so direct on turn in.
I've got a creak/rattle in the driver's door of my 2000 C4 Cab which could have been the result of 2 repairs: 1) replacement of the window regulator by Indy shop and 2) replacement of the door latch to fix the CLS by a Porsche dealer. It could also just be due to something coming loose in the past 20-21 years.
It only bothers me when the top's up and the radio's off. Otherwise, I don't notice it much and am too lazy/cheap to bother to try to "fix" it.
I hope everyone realizes I was being totally sarcastic. Guy wants to know and compare a 2018 VW Golf to a 996. Keep your VW. Well, truth is my 7/98 build 99 996 is tight as a drum. There are no rattles at all, the seats are great and comfortable, solid all around. All in all it is the best car I've ever owned.
I've got a '99 C4 couple with 123k miles. It doesn't have interior creaks or rattles. It is not the quietest car--certainly more engine and road noise than my previous Infiniti, and that was before the Gundo mod. But that's why it weighs nearly a half ton less than the Infiniti did. I've had numerous bits of the interior apart and have always been impressed by the quality!

The only rattles my car came with were from the top. The plastic tips on the ends of the top mounts were worn. Adding duct tape quiets them down for a short bit. All the other vibrations in my interior are self inflicted. The RSS semi-solid mounts brought up some resonances in the door panels. It's actually kind of fun. Luckily they are not at a typical cruising speed. I added an amplifier and routed some RCA cables through that I didn't secure well enough. I'll get an occasional resonance from these as well. None are bad enough for me to take anything apart. Maybe I'll get to it if I ever fix the foam on the blend doors (no more foam bits blowing out) ...
I'm hoping this won't jinx it. My 2002 Cab with a June 2002 build is rock solid. No squeaks or rattles. I could drive this car endlessly. Sport seats are comfy.
Thanks to AutoAtlanta for having these exploded views online. Look to part 8. The plasticized cap that goes over the end of the 'centering journal'. They lose their shape and crack.
