This may sound silly, but every time I have had to fix a problem on a tiptronic , that had "NO CODES", but would not shift up to 5th gear, or would drop out of 5th gear unexpectedly, the problem was the front tire circumference..

99 996 149k miles. In automatic the Tip has started dropping from 5th to 3rd suddenly for no apparent reason. It's sporadic. I've started driving it in manual mode only and it operates as expected and very well. I took it to my local indy, They are a well respected shop that works on German cars only but they are not Porsche specialists. They said there were no codes at all!
I have a Durametric that I purchased and for whatever reason have never used. I need to get some practice with it. Is there something I could be looking for with that?

The front tires have to be the "exact same circumference", if one of the front tires is new and one is old/worn, or if one has 45psi in it and the other has 20psi in it, or if you have a 225 on one side or a 235 on the other, the Control Unit thinks the car is in a turn, it will not upshift in a turn, or go to 5th gear..
It may not be your problem, but I have seen many techs scratch their heads, or claim the tiptronic is bad due to this silver bullet..

I think you nailed it. I balanced the air pressure (front tires were out by about 10psi) and it's been several weeks now with no issues. Thank you!

.. I love it when a symptom with a high $$$ probability turns out to be a sophisticated but simple fix, that's why I call them Silver Bullets...

I have seen Techs make a "big production" out of this and similar fixes when the fix is not intuitive to the symptoms.. They will test for hours, and pull out special equipment to test the Tiptronic for hours in multiple days and road tests, and get a half dozen people involved from the GM to Service Manager to Porsche Hot Line ME's. And after all that they can come out smelling like Rose due to the un-intuitive relationship between the symptoms and the fix..
Where-as if I just walk up and say," Hey put some air in those front tires and it will fix it," It will get no "attaboys"... lol..
