I do have a thermometer, I bought it to diagnose a bad wheel bearing, that turned out to be an old tire.

When I used my brakes for the suggested panic stops, the smell was initially there, but no heat remained after letting the brakes cool and checking w laser thermometer.
Leading evidence: 'tire' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'tire' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check w laser thermometer' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi rennlisters
I noticed the smell of brake when I parked up, but on the lift, all the wheels are free, no drag. The parking brake is the same, on works, off is free. Any ideas what this might be? Thanks!
I hardly used the brakes during the drive.
Sounds like you might have a caliper hanging up . Might have a rubber brake line coming apart internally/collapsing . But as it cools the calipers release . Do you have a hand held temp gauge ? Very useful in quickly measuring temps at all four wheels .
If you can find a road that you can do 3-4 panic stops . Then drive for a mile or two and coast to a stop , don't use the brakes to stop . Hop out and measure all four brake calipers/rotors . That should sniff out any brake calipers hanging up and being hotter than the others .

thanks!
I do have a thermometer, I bought it to diagnose a bad wheel bearing, that turned out to be an old tire.
Question...My brake lines are upgraded to stainless, and were new in '22. Does that affect the diagnostic method at all? Thanks for the tip. Will report back.
^^^ I would still do the test . If you find one caliper/rotor hotter than the rest you may have a caliper going bad . Or maybe trapped air from changing the lines . It's an easy baseline test to perform and costs nothing .
The 996 manual trans has a vent to let air through the clutch area, if you work it you'll smell it.
I believe the expected life of the clutch is < 80K miles "average"

@pdxmotorhead
it's a manual. But, it had a new clutch in 2022?
I should mention, last week The ABS and PSM lights came on immediately after installing a new cheapish amazon 3rd brake light. Yesterday I finally swapped back to the OEM red brake light. I got the amzn one because the rubber trim was falling off my original. The cheap Amazon one already has moisture inside the lens, after less than a week, so I advise against purchase.
Anyway, the abs and PSM lights went off as soon as I was using the OEM brake light again.
Related maybe? Thanks for your help.
When I used my brakes for the suggested panic stops, the smell was initially there, but no heat remained after letting the brakes cool and checking w laser thermometer. Thinking, oh no, it's the clutch, I then went out and gave it some welly, from 1750 rpm in 3rd, and listening / feeling for slippage in the clutch. No slippage. And no smell. I think that what happened is, my car sat on the trailer, then I drove her but only gently, then I washed her, and neglected to drive and dry the brakes. So some corrosion and surface friction maybe caused the smell? Because it's gone now.
Note to self. Don't put her away wet. And drive a little more aggressively. Not in traffic, but just use the brakes especially when wet. I'm a bit of a slowpoke.
