Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It can be done, DeJeeper installed a 996.2 GT3 engine into his 996.1 after suffering an engine failure.
Leading evidence: 'Install 996' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'wiring harness and abs system' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install 996' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
You would need to change the ECU, instrument cluster and probably the wiring harness and ABS system.

I would swap my sensors over simply because they are newer (i started replacing before i realized things were not fixable) So from what you are saying i should worry about anything else?

My advice would be BEFORE installing the donor engine, replace all the known wear items that are super hard to install after the fact...

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All!
This may be a dumb question, but i had a ruined 996.1 motor and I was able to get a motor from a 2002 996.1. I can tell they are different from the line that run to the back of the AC. If I switch all the stuff from the top, so AC, fuel intake rails a some other pieces, is there any reason I cant swap this engine in?
Any help would be appreciated!
All mk1 3.4l motors r the same.... but some of the accessories and sensors changed. Swap your stuff thats different onto the long block and u r good to go.
Going to a mk2 3.6 is doable but a whole nother moster if a project.
Installing a 996.2 motor into a 996.1 is not very practical because a .1 motor is a 5 chain with variable cam Timing and a .2 has variable cam timing and lift. The 996.1 engine uses a fuel return line on it’s injection system and an 996.2 does not use a return line. Also, a 996 .2 uses can bus and IIRC a 996.1 does not. You would need to change the ECU, instrument cluster and probably the wiring harness and ABS system. It can be done, DeJeeper installed a 996.2 GT3 engine into his 996.1 after suffering an engine failure.
This conversion is possible if you do all the work yourself but doesn’t make sense if you have to buy all the necessary parts pay someone to do it
I truly admire DeJeeprs skill to accomplish this.
If your skill level is not as great as his you would come out cheaper in the long run repairing your engine or sourcing another 996.1 engine.
Good luck with whichever path you choose.

Yeah this is .2, 3.4L so my plan was to swap everything "on top" fuel lines and all that from my .1 to the .2. I would swap my sensors over simply because they are newer (i started replacing before i realized things were not fixable) So from what you are saying i should worry about anything else?
Thanks
For clarity, your original engine (attachment for ref) should have been the M96.02 from the factory. This was a unique MY99 because Porsche was moving over to e-gas and the C4 in the M96.02 had it standard unlike the 1999 C2 that came with drive by wire throttle. The C2 would have come from the factory with the M96.01. Both engines are 3.4L 5-chain VarioCam setups, but as Mark has clearly mentioned, the engine out of a 2002 996 would have been the M96.03 3-chain VarioCam+ that is a different system to control variable timing with nested lifters. 996.2 cars would NOT have 3.4L engines from the factory. Therefore, if you truly have a post 2002 3.4L M96 engine, then it didn't come from a 996 car.
IMHO, you have a few options on the table:
1. rebuild it yourself - lots of resources from LN to assist to help mitigate further mistakes
2. purchase a used 3.4L M96 from a dismantler or online marketplace like eBay - the risk? you could be getting another problem
3. purchase a 3.4L short block from Porsche - if available? costly and head will still need to be reconditioned
4. Rebuild with a reputable company like Flat 6 Innovations
The best way to tell for sure is to read the engine no. On the left side of the case just above the sump plate. A 3.4 liter 5 chain engine no. Will begin with M96/01, M96/02 or M95/04. A 3.6 litter 3 chain engine will begin with M96/03 or M96/05 (this is the type no. For 997.1 car). if the engine no contains the letters AT it is a factory remanufactured engine. If it has the letter S, it has the factory X51package. If the S is at the end of the Eng. no. The X51 was a dealer added kit.

Just to make things crystal clear....All model year 99,00,01 have a 5 chain engine with different engine controls than the newer 02+ 3 chain cars.
Seems you're asking about swapping out a (99-01my) 996.1_ 5 chain engine to a (02+my)996.2_ 3 chain. Thats a major project that probably is best done with a donor car, or access to a boneyard 996.2_ 5 chain car with all the right parts still intact. You'll more or less need everything 168Sierra said in his above post. At the least its a involved conversion job not many do to get another 20hp and another problematic 996engine. Especially if you're considering a boneyard or dismantler used unknown engine. Would be maybe worthwhile if you're doing a FSI 4000cc rebuilt engine.
5) If you're considering a 5chain to 3 chain m96 swap with all the work needed to do this swap, might as well Swap out the problem prone m96 engine for a dependable big power LS, Audi 2.7t, or maybe even a honda engine. 2.7t Audi is easily fully integrated since it uses the same DME more or less, and keeps it in the tutonic vag family.

You keep saying your replacement engine is from a "2002 996.2". That doesn't seem to be the case ( thankfully) and is causing some confusion...
Looks like both your engines are 996.1 3.4's and are totally interchangeable with exception of some possible minor bolted on items..
How did your "ruin" your original engine? What happened to it?
Yea, that's better news. That's a 3.4L from either a 2000 or 2001 Carrera 4. As mentioned before, your '99 C4 should have had the M96.02 from the factory. These are both 3.4L 5 chain engines of the same era and so the swap should be pretty smooth. I'm sure Skip can allude to any major differences in the ancillaries that would be of concern.
My advice would be BEFORE installing the donor engine, replace all the known wear items that are super hard to install after the fact...
Here's a rough list:
1. VarioCam adjuster wear pads
2. Chain guides
3. AOS
4. RMS
5. Throwout bearing
6. Clutch kit including flywheel
7. Oil Filler tube
8. Oil pressure sender
9. Crank position sensor
10. IMS Bearing
11. Fuel Injectors
12. Coil Packs
13. Coolant Expansion Tank
14. Oil Cooler (Heat exchanger)
15. Starter
Actually it got worse, the crank i got and replaced, but actually the original engine then broke a connecting rod when i connected the piston on cylinder 6 incorrectly and ruined a cylinder wall. I dont have the extra money right now to sleeve and start fresh so i found this engine for cheap. While I wait to save up for sleeves and other parts, i still want to drive the car so i got this engine with 150K on it to drive for now. Next time Ill reach out to you guys first cause that number search scared me all morning! Im new to the porsche world so bear with me i may have more basic/seemingly dumb questions to ask.
Thanks for all the help so far!
