Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I removed the D7 fuse with the spoiler in extended position to prevent damage, while I am using the car.

Suggestion
I read in one post that I should dismantle and clean some connectors that lurk in the engine bay on the rear right hand side -- but I struggle to free the box from the small panel to which they are fixed.
Leading evidence: 'Use car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'issue between the dme and spoiler motor' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean some connectors' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
That suggests the speed sensor is working fine and the input is getting to the DME, and the manual switch works so thats not the issue - therefore its probably an issue between the DME and spoiler motor.

Like you, I found mention that the connections near the R rear taillight may need to be cleaned, unsure how to access that though if youre having trouble.

I am looking for tutorial to clean up and inspect/troubleshoot the spoiler actuation system.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Theres a flare on the end of the metal support that fits into a groove in the plastic carrier, it had worked its way loose on both sides on my car.
The spoiler light comes on at freeway speed and, when I stop, I find that the spoiler has not retracted completely on one side. When I extend the spoiler manually using the switch in the fuse panel, the spoiler appears to be struggling to raise. I am not completely sure that it raises to its design fully extended position, but it is leveled, where it gets (differently from the retracted position)
I removed the D7 fuse with the spoiler in extended position to prevent damage, while I am using the car.
I am looking for tutorial to clean up and inspect/troubleshoot the spoiler actuation system. Any recommendations on where to find one?
Thanks
Raise engine lid, look closely at the two cylinders that lift the spoiler, locate the small holes on the lift cylinders, shoot copious WD-40 into those small holes. Then manually raise and lower the spoiler several times.
Couple YouTube videos on the topic including one by member Yogibara.
I recently had a similar issue, very easy repair as everything just bolts off. The metal hydraulic ram supports had detached from the black plastic carriers. Theres a flare on the end of the metal support that fits into a groove in the plastic carrier, it had worked its way loose on both sides on my car. Was very obvious when disassembled. Total repair took about an hour. Suggest putting sheeting or a towel over the engine as it is easy to drop fasteners.
My spoiler works fine manually on my 1999 C4 convertible but does not deploy at speed. I read in one post that I should dismantle and clean some connectors that lurk in the engine bay on the rear right hand side -- but I struggle to free the box from the small panel to which they are fixed. I am a great fan of spraying WD 40 everywhere but that makes no difference

Like you, I found mention that the connections near the R rear taillight may need to be cleaned, unsure how to access that though if youre having trouble. Maybe others have some experience.
