Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. I've installed quite a few and they have all been happy with the results.
Leading evidence: 'Install quite a few and they have all been happy' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'problem' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install quite a few and they have all been happy' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The only option is replacement with a new or used instrument cluster.

I would suspect the problem to reappear with a used cluster, and a new one is $2700.

Unfortunately, it looks like they don't have a kit to repair the speedo.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

(First post -- I'm a newbie here. I did a search first.)
My 2000 996 C2 has developed what look like cracks in the digital speed area. The digits are fine, but it looks like there is some kind of anti-reflective coating or filter over the displays which has developed some wandering cracks. It is unsightly and makes the digital speedo hard to read. Has anyone dealt with this problem in a way other than to fork out $2700 for a new instrument cluster (the dealer's solution)? Thanks in advance for any help!

Here's what it looks like:
Crazed Speedo_996_C2_2000_small.jpg
Looks bad but is the car getting cold with a chance for moisture to form. It's a sensitive lcd so it might just be moisture or cold screwing around with it like typically happens in SOME PEOPLES winter
I have NO IDEA if North Hollywood Speedo's does new stuff... but for $130 I sent mine down and had it completely rebuilt.. might call them, if they dont do it, maybe they know who does - they are the best
I called Palo Alto Speedo and they said that the 996 can't be repaired. The only option is replacement with a new or used instrument cluster. I would suspect the problem to reappear with a used cluster, and a new one is $2700. Very disappointing, since the car only has 19,000 miles on it, been garaged its entire life, and only driven on nice days. The LCD seems to be working fine. But I noticed that Porsche LCDs are very easy to see in bright daylight. It looks like this is just some crackling of the anti-reflective filter over the LCDs. If the filter were separate, you would be talking about a $0.20 part to replace it. THanks everyone who chimed in.
My car sat outside on a 2 degree night and developed the same issue. It's gotten warmer the last couple days, and the cracking is slowly going away. Interested to see how it plays out.
My '99 developed the 'squiggly' thing on the odometer about 8 months ago. Still there. Car is @ 110k.
I hope someone has a solution other than replacement. My Mercedes developed pixel problems on the LCD display also. My solution there was a used cluster.
BMWs had a huge problem with dead pixels in the displays. I agree that the 996 display is much nicer and brighter than displays in most other cars of the same era.
Hopefully, you can find a fix. Keep us posted.
Just a mini-update: mine definitely gets better with warmer temps and worse with colder. Peak high last week was 50 deg, and it was smaller but didn't go away. We'll see what happens when we get warmer temps sometime in June or July.
Incorrect. You can see my blog for pictures of replacing the LCD screen on the climate control. The kit is about 70 bucks.

Part comes from module master. I would contact them and place an order by phone though, as I ordered off their website once and they completely missed it. IIRC, I have always talked to Laura.
Oops 53 bucks, not 75. The display characters are very slightly different. The font on the number is slightly thinner, and IIRC the vent direction is a slightly different icon when lit up. So subtle that you wouldn't know the difference if you didn't know what it originally was like. I've installed quite a few and they have all been happy with the results. Instruction book will literally walk you right through it, it is quite easy.

Wow, that's a great find on the climate control repair! Unfortunately, it looks like they don't have a kit to repair the speedo. I got a quote from a reputable speedo shop (one of only about 3 I could find in the country that would do it). It's $800 for the speedo repair, and will run me about $100 to R&R the instrument cluster locally. Down quite a bit from the $2700, but still a little pricey. I did also get a quote for about $300 but it was not from a widely known super-reputable place specializing in Porsche/Mercedes/BMW, etc. Only want to R&R one time, but for the $500 diff, I could to it four more times if needed to get it right for the $500 difference! Hmm....
Pop out the hazard button, pop out the little vent hole on the opposite side. Remove the T25 (IIRC) torx screw from each hole. Pull up on cluster. Remove 3 electrical connectors off back. Cluster is out. Just saved you $100.
