Porsche may have stopped using 911 as the internal model designation after MY89, but it does not change the fact that the car they refer to internally as a 997 is the current-generation Porsche 911.

I accidentally posted something similar up on the 911 board and was quickly schooled that I posted in the wrong area. So here it goes again.
This weekend I achieved a childhood dream and became the owner of this 2003 996 C2 with 32700 miles on her. I can't tell you how excited I am. I've learned a lot on this board and looking forward to learning more and more about this great car. I'm looking forward to a long and fun ownership.
Hi
. Welcome to the forum.
There is tooo much information about our cars
.
i am very happy to see new users in this forum like me
.
Everyone share porsche love in this forum.
Nice rides. Enjoy your car.
Jon, yeah I didn't want to get into it with him, I very much consider mine a 911
But I guess the air cooled guys run a little hot in the head so I let it be. I am just so excited to be an owner finally.
btw this is my gift to myself for enduring 2 years of chemo for my 6 year old daughter, who is in remission. Life is short and you never know what's going to happen, and you can't take it with you.
A BIG double congratulations on that along with excellant color & wheel choice on one of the best 911's made & smartest purchase. recommend you get the Porsche 996 the essential companion book to minimize expenses & maintain your 996. Might make a great college graduation gift for your daughter!
haha, I have been waiting for the Pumpkin comment. That will be my first mod. Can someone tell me where to get the gear to change them out? I'll get that ordered ASAP !
Welcome, the color is GORGEOUS! More importantly, it is great to hear the good news about your daughter. You both will look great with the smiles on your faces when you're out for a cruise. I hope that the both of you have many happy ones!
Man, your car is beautiful, but back up a bit when you take those photos!
Seriously -- glad to hear about your car, gladder to hear about your daughter. May the best day of your past be the worst day of your future.
I actually jumped over to the air cooled board so see their comments. The weren't to hard on you, I have seem a worse. Enjoy your new car, and if you need help or advice this is one of the best places.
Very glad to have you......you are amongst friends. Take your time and learn about your car....find what you are happy with and decide what you want to change. Join the local PCA and take advantage of the driving events. That will get your heart thumpin'!
Welcome aboard! Pay no attention to the handful of air-heads that are just jealous because their cars are slower and more primitive than ours!
Beautiful car...enjoy it in good health with your daughter!
Your 996 version of the 911 must of been like you walking into a party they were having eating a big bowl of ice cream yum yumming it up while they are eating crackers for desert. I guess they'll have to upgrade to get a/c that works, cool running engine and other aspects ivangene can tell you first hand from his experience. I think the not driving the 911's during winter all started with guys not able to get heat out of there older 911's
Anyway.......
Great looking car and enjoy the car. Best of enjoyments to your childhood dream daughter too.
Haha - air guys get pretty sensitive.
That said, I agree. You (we) do not have a 911, but having had both I can tell you that's not a bad thing.
Face it guys, 911s are air cooled and have torsion bars, and they're like a little dinky things with upright windshields. They don't have power steering and the smell like oil and/or exhaust and ......they're air cooled!
Our cars are are badged as Carreras, and all the part numbers start with 996. Only the marketing dweebs call them 911s, and for all the wrong reasons IMO.
But that's ok !
You my friend have a nice car - and as a guy who doesn't know the difference between a 911 and a 996, you will enjoy the 996 more...trust me.
I understand the hardship of watching a loved one going through chemo. I hope your daughter has a very long remission and that she doesn't have to experience this type of therapy again. Enjoy your new car, you deserve to treat yourself during this type of journey.
Just remember not all of use aircooled guys have low tech torsion bar heatless acless powersteeringless 911s.
Some of us have 964s and 993s, which are aircooled but have modern things like coil springs, AC that works, heat that works, power steering, power brakes, ABS, AWD, G50 transmission and FI system that doesn't cost five thousand dollars to maintain and power the of 911 Turbo without the brain damage.
Yeah nice car, good color, you will enjoy it, and agian hope your daughter stays well.
now you did it.... you pissed me off !!
I took my car in for tech inspection sign off for 2011 PCA and BMW yesterday... my tech said I had 0nly 3 coolant leaks and he put dsome silicone and JB Weld on those so I should be fine... I will never hear the end of my water cooled days -
You guys can haze me :-) Your just being nice cause I told you about my daughter, but if there is hazing to be had, let it begin ! I am a big time newbie so I'm sure this is going to be painful. LOL
thanks for the warm welcome to the community. Looking forward to meeting some of you in the Bay Area some day as well. I love that owning this car seems to be much more than just owning a car, I had no idea there was this much passion until I found the board.
I will admit that the board is also scary, because this is where you hear some scary IMS stories, but its' good to understand what I'm getting myself into. I am considering a 3 year Fidelity warentee just for peace of mind while I take over ownership of the car. the previous owner kept it in mint condition, but I'm planning to actually drive her much more than she's used to.
congrats onn your daughters remission. That is a beautiful color. Make sure you take her for many rides. How many kids get to say they ride in a porsche?
Enjoy! Life is short.... going through the cancer thing with my wife right now. We'll get through it. Take some long drives with your little girl and savor every minute of it. Congrats! she looks great!
It's not a car, it's a religion.
IMS failures is not as bad as it may sound. You just need to catch it before it fails completely. Seriously, putting roller bearings inside an engine has NEVER been a good idea.
They will make a lot noise and start to leak before exploding your engine.
That was that last to have the internal code name "911". However, the 964, 993, 996, and 997 are all "911's"
They just are, and here is the 40th Anniversary model (note the badge Porsche affixed to the tail from the factory).
Great ride...sounds like your having fun already. The 996 has all the DNA of the orignal "901".
If your thinking about doing the LNEng IMS upgrade make sure you take a look at the comment in “101 projects”. For Porsche’s after 2002, when removing the IMS the cams may skip a chain tooth. The cam alignment should be check after IMS upgrade.

I knew I'd love this car, but I didn't realize how much ! I can't stop driving it.
Btw I'm pretty sure I do not have PSM, not that I care but I though all Porsche's did?
I bought my 2002 Lapis Blue C2 a year ago. 5000 miles on it now and a big grin on my face for each of them. Enjoy! I love your interior color, it looks great against the blue.
I'm a bit late to the welcoming party....welcome to Rennlist, the home of PORSCHE enthusiasts.Hope your daughter enjoys many more miles with her Dad and his 911, or 996 or whatever you want to label it. They are all a lot of fun whether they pump water or air regardless of what the badge says on the rear. Congrats.
Nope, the 996
REALLY IS
a 911. Porsche may have stopped using 911 as the internal model designation after MY89, but it does not change the fact that the car they refer to internally as a 997 is the current-generation Porsche 911. It has a lot more to do with the lack of interchangeable parts between the 996 and the previous cars than any desire to make it sound like the 996 isn't a real 911. Until MY89 the internal designation matched the official model name of the car. This not being the case anymore doesn't make the 996 any less of a 911--it only means that enough parts have changed that is necessary to distinguish the old ones from the new ones.
When normal people talk about a Porsche 911, they're not referring to Porsche's internal model designation--they're referring to any of the cars Porsche calls 911 from the 1960s to the present day.
The people that say the 996 isn't a real 911 tend to be snooty folks that look like the guy below.
This is a photo of my daughter on our ride home from picking up the new car. Yep, this is my little cancer survivor. Guess what she wants for her 16th birthday? guesses?
I'm sorry to be riding this 911 vs 996 horse all over your thread.
Let's get the priorities straight...you and your daughter deserve to be happy. Porsches are just one great way to enjoy life.
Take care of that daughter and give her whatever she wants. I'm choking up just thinking about it...seeing as I have young children too. She looks lovely.

Now, about the 911 vs 996. I don't look like the guy in the pic (yet) and you would never accuse me of being snooty. I am however familiar with every Porsche model built from the 901 to the 997...and the 996 is not a 911.
As I said -
that's not a bad thing!
It is however true. I love my 996. At the moment I love it more than I did my 911. It's a fantastic car.
Yes, the marketing department insists on calling the car a 911, and I guess to some people, whatever the marketing guys say must be true. But I work with marketing guys, and yeah....they will tell you whatever they think you want to hear if it means making a sale. Please don't tell me that this is news to you.
A lot of us here though hang out in the engineering department both literally and figuratively. To us the car is clearly a 996, in this case it's a MkII 996. The stories wouldn't make sense otherwsie (ie - "I replaced the coolant tank in my 911." "Oh really, that's weird?"
As an example....I'm not much of a dog guy (I prefer cats) but if I did own a dog, and I was telling a story about how my dog was snagged and torn to shreds by an eagle to another dog guy, I'm pretty sure he would want to know that it was a "chihauha" and not a Great Dane.
In your world you'd say, it's a dog, they're all dogs.
and they'd be right. I've got 4 dogs at home, they may be different breeds but they are still all dogs.
Let me know when Porsche put's the name up to a popular vote. Until then, I'll call it what Porsche calls it.
There's a great history behind this fantastic model and each generation has been great in their own way. I'm not sure why some would want to dismiss that.
It's pretty awesome when kids come up to see my car at the gas station and ask "How fast is your 911?" That quite frankly is one of the cool things about this car is no matter which generation you drive people all over the world recognize it as a "911". The car is iconic and timeless.
You can call yours what you will. Enjoy the commercials, there's some pretty cool ones in there.
Hey Congrats on a great car and more importantly why you got it. I'm another newbie myself. I'm about a year out from my purchase but I am starting to research and learn now. Does that certify me as raving mad?
This has been a fun thread to follow. Now that we have the name out of the way ha ha lets start on the name. Do you say Porsche or Porsche-a?
That's funny
I used to care about how Porsche was pronounced, but over the years I've come to accept that Porsh is the anglic pronunciation of the german name Porsche.
I was born in the Netherlands but have lived in Canada since early childhood. My name is pronounced much differently here than it is over there, and that's not the least bit unusual.
Plus which I've heard that even some Germans say Porsh instead of Porsche. It just rolls off the tongue more smoothly.
