So far with both cars I've not had to book the car in for this job specifically, it gets done when in the case of the Boxster when it was in getting a new radiator after an encounter with some road debris, then again when I had the water pump replaced, a few years later once again when I had the coolant tank replaced.

In the case of the Turbo, the coolant was replaced when the Turbo was getting a new radiator (among other things) after a mule deer encounter, then again some years later when I had the water pump replaced, then more recently just a portion of the coolant got replaced when the radiators were all replaced.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, pretty much most of the preventative maintenance has been done to my car with the exception of brake fluid which I will be doing when I do my rotors/pads in a few weeks. Not even mentioning anything about the IMS as its a waste of time/energy. Basically, just wondering if there is an expected lifespan/recommended replacement interval on the following parts for these cars: -Radiator -Cooling Hoses -Fuel pump My car has just over 100k but in the high 40s on the engine. Thanks! I know some of these radiators last a long time and there is a ton of cooling hoses under there. As they are likely from 2001 just figured I would ask

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 12112998

The word I get and my direct experience is radiators, cooling hoses, fuel pumps, are durable and long lived. (The hoses on my 2002 Boxster are original. So is the passenger side radiator. The driver side radiator was damaged years ago and replaced but I'm sure it has over 200K miles on it. While you didn't mention it, the Boxster water pump lasted until 172K miles. The fuel pump to around 200K miles.) (To show you that there can be differences, all 3 radiators in my 2003 Turbo developed leaks late last year/early this year while I was back in the mid-west in the most of the time bitterly cold (single digits cold) weather. All 3 radiators developed a seepage where the lower portion of the radiator and the finned core join. I was told this type of failure is common, at least in that region at between 100K miles and 150K miles. My Turbo had just accumulated 130K miles. Oh, and the Turbo water pump developed a leak at around 120K miles.) So there can be exceptions. Every car can be different. Unless you just want to out of hand replace these items -- be sitting down when you get the parts prices -- a thorough inspection is called for. For the hoses you can give the hoses a squeeze -- the ones you can get to from under the car without having to do any removing of any underbody panels -- to see if the hoses have too much give. A hose with lots of give is a hose that is getting close to its replace by date. Try to grip the hose so your finger tips are at the bottom of the hose and when you squeeze try to push your finger tips through the hose. If a hose is soft enough to replace is a matter of experience so if you doubt your experience in this area develop some. Go squeeze some newer firmer hoses. Some auto parts stores have new hoses out and you can give one or two a discreet squeeze. (Check the CCTV camera or you'll end up on YouTube.) Check at the bottom of the hoses where each hose fits onto the hose fitting of the block/pump or radiator. My mechanic buddies would tell me that if one found one bad hose, or one worth replacing, that all hoses should be replaced since they were all of the same age and had experienced the same exposure. Back in the day of just a few hoses this was not a real problem, but with these cars there are a number of hoses, and to replace all is a bit expensive. However, I think the advice is still sound even though it represents a bigger outlay for hoses than back in the day. For the radiators you probably will have to remove the front bumper cover and unbolt and gently swing the A/C condenser out the way to expose the radiator. Look for signs of wetness, anti-freeze residue. If you have the equipment you can pressurize the cooling system. If you find one radiator leaking as with hoses you probably should replace both (or all 3). The fuel pump will (probably) just work up until it doesn't. There is no real test of a fuel pump you can do to identify one about to fail -- unless you just happen to test it right as it is failing -- so it is a matter of either you leave it in service until it fails (or acts up) or you replace it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks so much for the great information. Lots of good advice Actually will be taking the bumper off to clean the radiators so will give them a good look. Water pump was done 1k ago. Know the fuel pump and radiators are original.

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 12113136

Just a FYI: Best thing you can do for the hoses/radiators, water pump, anything that is contacted by coolant is to use the right anti-freeze and change the coolant every so often. Porsche states the stuff is "lifetime" but it loses -- it "wears out" -- its additive package said additives are there to help with the water pump seals and minimize corrosion and help keep the hoses fresh. While the block won't corrode through there are a number of very thin walls of aluminum standing between the coolant and the outside of the cooling system or between the coolant and the engine's oil. I like to change the coolant -- just a drain and proper refill with the vacuum lift system (have this done at the dealer service department) -- every so often, every 4 to 5 years. Oh, might add also keep the radiator ducts cleaned out. Trash collects and retains moisture and salt and this will corrode the radiators where the trash touches them and it will corrode the A/C condensers were it touches them.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Great advice. I am more of a preventative maintenance person than waiting for stuff to break. But I will not be wasting money on big items like radiators. Coolant is fresh as of 2k ago and my local dealer/shop says they have only had to replace radiators due to damage and not many cooling hoses. Thanks again for the information. The Porsche syndrome is becoming an obsession. I used to be a BMW guy as well, but they just do not do it for me anymore. Though I do like how the manual transmissions shift
