I just purchased my car a couple of weeks ago the previous owner has a monster stereo system installed extremely loud and crisp BUT the bass box is so big it only fits because the the backseat is in the down position I need my rear seats back but want to keep the bass sounds truly amazing sound so I need to discard the 50 lbs bass box and install a slim line type of bass so I either need a behind the backseat bass or the dimensions so I can fit one smaller/ lighter
Leading evidence: 'Install extremely loud and crisp' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'active might work better' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install extremely loud and crisp' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suspected cause
I suspect active might work better because the amp, controls, and shallow sub driver are meant to work together, but if your existing system has adjustable crossover, sub level, and/or EQ, then passive might be just as good.

Suggestion
Mine has door subs as part of hifi and you can also replace those but I find they actually sound decent if your amp can run that low ohm.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This under seat subwoofer (Rockville RW10CA 10" 800 Watt Under-Seat Slim Amplified Car Subwoofer +Wire Kit

)
is surprisingly good. Only 2.7 tall, so you might be able to build something around that. I think somebody on RL has determined they dont fit under a 996 seat, but maybe you can find somewhere else. If you search on Amazon for under seat subwoofer you will see a few options (active or passive), 8 or 10. The one linked above is active (built-in amp) 10.
Presumably the OP has an amp or 2 driving the subs, which is why I suggested the Stealthbox. You could also buy the Bose box and hack in some better subs.
not looking to put it underneath just back of the backseat 1 big amp passive bass boxed fills the whole back window and literally weighs 50lbs??? Why I don’t know
but does anyone have experience with the Rockville it’s the right size just butt ugly blue on my space grey interior would not be subtle
Crutchfelds sold out and at 800+ it’s not in the wallet after buying 2 sets of rims tires and updated services I’m kinda tapped
but thanks for the replies good ideas thanks
I have been using both the Rockville 10" sub and a similar Planet Audio 8" (apparently no longer availalable ->
Amazon

) since 2016 in my basement and they work great. I wanted an invisible 5.1 system in the basement, and these "underseat" subs were the only ones that fit the space (powered by a plug-in 12v power supplies in my case). They perform shockingly well given size (and price) in a large basement, I'd think it would be very effective in the small confines of a 996. They won't match the monster unit you had, I'm sure, but I think they would work very well.
I found the Rockville 10" performed about as well as the Planet Audio 8", so either 8" or 10" should work well. These two are active subs. There passive underseat subs available as well if you want to tie into the existing subwoofer amp. I suspect active might work better because the amp, controls, and shallow sub driver are meant to work together, but if your existing system has adjustable crossover, sub level, and/or EQ, then passive might be just as good.
I'd look at all of those types of subs (search "underseat subwoofer" on Amazon) and choose the one with dimensions and looks that fit your needs. If you could fit it under the seats (again I think I recall somebody saying they couldn't), that would seem to be the most invisible solution by far and you wouldn't need to worry about looks -- but obviously mount it wherever you want.
That’s great setup but I’m not going that far my system is in place just looking for a more discreet bass box
if I were to start over that is definitely the way to go
Thanks again
Mike
Hey nypowr4. I ran I. To similar dilemma and even went as far as removing my seats to make sure of fit ( hint hint it did not). Best option out there and decent sound is:
Amazon
Amazon
A pair would be perfect no these are self powered
The chopped Bose box is the other option however my car didn’t have Bose and only Hifi most system ( blasted Becker most amp is the devil and even Becker said not to waste money fixing it or replacing it with another as they all will die due to design flaw). Mine has door subs as part of hifi and you can also replace those but I find they actually sound decent if your amp can run that low ohm.
My problem is I have a giant kicker bass box that barely fits behind the rear seats and that thing weighs way too much
the sound is great but it’s pointed up towards rear window and the shock waves vibrates the glass I’m afraid it will shatter
so I’m looking for a passive box that can handle and save space and weight behind the 911 rear seat
thanks for the responses
