I recently replaced my CS and can tell you that you'll need to replace it if it's broken.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am normally on the 986 forum where I initially posed this question, but since the part is the same for 986s I am cross-posting here. My horn stopped working and I traced it to the ground connection not making it through the clocksping under the steering wheel. I was able to find a used one locally so the Boxster has got its beep back, but I would like to have a look inside the old one to see if it is reparable. I haven't found an easy way to disassemble it so am looking for tips. I assume the center ring in the picture has to be pushed back through to separate the top and the bottom of the unit.

POST 2Original post

They r not ment to be taken apart. They uncoil and make a mess. Im sure it can be done but its not really worth the trouble since they r not teribly expensive.

POST 3Original post

Maybe since it is essentially a paper weight at this point you have freedom to go for it. Nothing lost.

POST 4Original post

I recently replaced my CS and can tell you that you'll need to replace it if it's broken. eBay sells them for less than $100. Since you got it out might as well replace it.

POST 5Original post

I've taken these apart. Yes, you need to somehow hold open the tabs and then pull to get the centre out. The clock spring is a pretty simple device. I doubt that the wire ribbon inside is the problem, as it is just wire, and there is nothing in there for the ribbon to snag on. Lots of grease to prevent friction, too. I'd say the problem is the plugs.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I got it apart with minimum breakage... details here: http://986forum.com/forums/boxster-g...it-airbag.html

You are right, the problem was not inside. The ground wire was broken at the female spade connector... so if I had checked there first it would have saved all the hassle. But now we all know what the inside of the clockspring looks like!

POST 8Original post

Mine was rusted off. The self canceling was also broken so I had no choice but to replace.

POST 9Original post

Quotes source post: 17599469

Is the horn ground the shorter wire near the 4 o'clock position? And the longer ground that is detached in the photo for the airbag?

POST 10Original post

The brown wire with the female spade connector is for the horn (the male spade is clearly visible next to the unconnected female socket on the brown wire). The yellow connector near the bottom of the photo goes to the airbag.

POST 11Original post

thanks. What is this one at the 4 o'clock position? It is still attached and partially hidden by the AirBag wire...

POST 12Original post

I have to admit I need to learn how to read wiring diagrams. They are Greek to me. This diagram makes me think both brown wires are horn. Reason I ask is because the connection on my short one looks bad and I think it might disable the horn. And what does M110 mean?

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17740647

Based on the schematic, that is the switched horn circuit. Usually, numbers like M110 are used for referencing parts in the system.

POST 14Original post

M110 is the grid coordinate for where that wire goes, its on another page. On the factory schmatics the pages have riws and columns. I think its row 110, column M.

POST 15Original post

thx guys. I got a cool new wheel and that one CS wire is toast; good to know it's just horn. I can run it for a bit until I get it fixed...
