Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a heads up... I was doing this job for a friend yesterday, as they were quoted around $800 by the local dealer (it's on a 2003 base Boxster)...The Standard Motor Products Headlamp switch (STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS HLS1227 {#99661353500}) doesn't fit properly. The connections are all good, but the main shaft is keyed at an angle instead of straight up (it's keyed at about 4:00 as opposed to 6:00 at the bottom of the shaft). The result of this is that the bezel and **** don't fit properly... Bummer. Rockauto send me a return label and agreed to refund me. ** I also replaced the silver glovebox latch handle - the dealer quoted $2k for this repair. The part was less than $200, and it took me about 15 min. to do the work. Anyone trust dealerships?

Yea, this is an easy DiY job. Switch went out on my last 996 and didn't take long to pop the old one out and the new one in. Definitely OEM Genuine Porsche part on this one. Not surprised the dealership service costs especially right now with the problems with new car inventory.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I dont think you have to buy the Porsche branded switch. Ive replaced my own with an OEM part a few years ago and it fit/worked fine - I havent had any trouble with it. It turns out that the particular switch I got is probably for a different model and just got misplaced in inventory.

NOPE! Regardless of brand.

POST 5Original post

I just replaced the headlight switch in my 996. Dealer quoted $550. I bought the OEM part from Suncoast for $145 and swapped it in 20 minutes. The other aftermarket brand for this part was something like Berlin Technique which is not known for their quality per the reviews.

POST 6Original post

I was driving my wife and daughter home from dinner Saturday night and was explaining high and low beams to my daughter as she is starting to learn to drive. The moment I went to high beam, poof, no lights. Fortunately right down the street from my house. This was one of those things I really didn't want to experiment with, so I too went with the Porsche part from Suncoast. Its been doing so well for the last year and a half. I suppose it was due for some small failure considering its age. If that's the worst I get, I'll take it.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, just to wrap this up... I returned the original switch I had gotten to Rock Auto and ordered a different one. I don’t have the brand at the moment (MTE ? I’ll edit this when I get the box later on...), but it was $98.00 and according to the photo it looked correct (the orientation of the key slot in the shaft). It turns out that this one had the Porsche part number on it as well as “made in Italy” just like the original... This is the switch I wound up getting... WVE 1S12605 {#99661353500, SW9648} (From Rock Auto - I ordered it on Tuesday and had it on Saturday)
