iCarsoft is a great tool and works great with both my 987 CS (should be similar to a 997) and 996 911 however with regards to the airbag light the iCarsoft was not able to read/reset the airbag on the 996 (at least in my experience).

OP, yes the Durametric can reset your airbag light however it is NOT your only option.

I ended up purchasing the FOXWELL NT510 which did in fact reset the airbag light of my 996.

I will be selling the 2003 (the car that needs the light off) and will keep the 2006, so looks like I'll need to take it to a shop rather than pay for a one-time use on the 2003.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

While doing an R&R on the driver's side regulator, I followed a YouTube video pretty closely, but shot myself in the foot by not following the simple AIRBAG RULE. You always take key out of ignition and you always disconnect the battery cable before you unhook the airbag, and before you re-connect. YouTube didn't say that, I didn't do it, and now the Airbag light is ON.
1. Is there a way to reset the airbag light?
2. If a scanner is needed, what one is the best choice for BOTH 996 and 997 models?
I have cleared the airbag light with the Durametric. It's expensive, and supports the 997 even better than the 996.
I do not believe the cheap OBD2 dongles can clear airbag codes. I have one of these and it's great for engine codes, and about useless for anythingelse.
The Icarsoft units MAY have the capability to clear airbag codes.
There is no way to reset the airbag light unless you have Durametric (which is a great investment for our cars) or access to PIWIS, the Porsche dealer software.
Well, rats, the Durametric website shows that there are different versions for up to 2004, and after. I will be selling the 2003 (the car that needs the light off) and will keep the 2006, so looks like I'll need to take it to a shop rather than pay for a one-time use on the 2003.
Any shop quality scanner can clear the code, snsp on, matco, autel. Just stop at sny decent shop and ask. Might cost u a $20 tip. The durametric is nice but no need to spend $300 if u just want to turn the light off.
I've bought several scanners that do some things, but if the Durametric can do it all, and then some, it's worth the money. I just need to check to see whether one will work with both platforms. The thought of taking it to the shop around the corner that has a Snap On scanning machine makes a lot of sense for this event, though!
There is a bit of misinformation being tossed around here. OP, yes the Durametric can reset your airbag light however it is NOT your only option.

I have a '99 996.1 911 if that helps you.
+1 on the Foxwell nt650
Edit per DB's comment below the model I am listing is the one that comes with "unlimited" manufacturers but is a bit more expensive. I use it for all of my cars including my 996.
If you end up buying the Foxwell NT510, make sure you buy it with the specific Porsche software. You can get one on Amazon with the software preloaded. Or buy an NT510, make an account at Foxwell and download the software that way (you have to pay for the software download).
+1 for this. My NT510 resets my airbag light ('99 C2) without issue. The only downside is that I cannot seem to read cam deviation...the values just show "0" which can't be right.
