Also, just because of the miles there's no guarantee the water pump has been replaced.

I'm not current on used 996 market prices but I'd say give the presence of the roll bar and what have you the car not worth $25K.

It depends upon how a thorough used car inspection turns out.

Based on the appearance of the dash and console parts that are not covered with DiNoc (vinyl faux carbon fiber), the interior is in really rough shape, and OP used the DiNoc to cover it up.

I asked him that if he was in the market wuold he keep looking or pull the triggger on this 911, but he just said it was a clean, fairly well cared for vehicle.

Suggestion
You can also inspect the calipers to see if it looks like original paint and if original paint, to make sure they are not discolored in any way(high track temps will sometime discolor calipers).

Suggestion
I wouldn't consider the car without the Carfax or other report run against the VIN...it could be a diamond that just needs to be polished in a few spots; it could also be rough.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, so the title may open me up to some serious abuse, but I am not a 996 expert. So long story short - there is a 2004 C4S Cab at MB of Omaha that is on eBay for $25k. Sounds like a decent price until you get to the particulars, hence this post. The car has 102415 miles on it. I have contacted the internet sales rep and she has told me 1) limited service history - RMS, IMSB and clutch replaced a couple of years ago at ~95k miles; 2) only one key; 3) brakes, tires, suspension of unknown mileage. Given the mileage I assume that the car has had the brakes and rotors replaced at some point, tires are a definite given the average 14k to 15k miles for rears (I am going from experience with my 964 & 993s) and I would really hope for PSS9's or 10's given that the car has a roll bar installed. She does not know if the car was someone's trackcar, but told me that the owner that traded the car says no. Pictures seem to show decent paint - usual nicks and dings on the snout. She can't tell me about the water pump though again, mileage would make it probable that it was replaced in the past. The question is when. Anyway I offered $19995 and was turned down, Not sure if it is worth more than that. It is a 4S so it has the hips I so like. Thoughts?
Check with them in early November. They will still have that car. It will be cold in Nebraska. Offer $20,250 at that time.
In the meantime, keep watching the normal websites for better deals. Right now and for the next 3 months is a great time to buy.
Doesn't sound too bad to me for a C4S. You'd want a thorough PPI for sure. Mileage is kinda high but if it wasn't abused and was well maintained it could be a decent buy. The PPI should give you a lot more to go on.
So nobody is really concerned about the 102k plus on the car. I was thinking on it (always dangerous, LOL) and started thinking about worn CV's, boots, shocks and all the rest that you always consider. Normally I squirrel away $3 to $4k for replacing everything - I can to get a fresh service baseline. I do not know that much of the inner workings of water-cooled rear engine 911s. I have the name of the shop, local p-car dealer in Omaha who did the IMSB, RMS and clutch so I will give them a call. I am pretty sure I can get into the car in the low-20's but as we all know, there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. I would be trading in a 2011 E350 Cab so that is a factor for me as well. Oh well, boys and their toys.
Not a bad idea to establish a baseline for the fluids by changing them. On the rest of the stuff, I'd wait til it broke before replacing. Otherwise, you'll be paying to swap out some perfectly good parts with service life left in them. I've never been afraid of a 100K+ mile car, assuming it's been well maintained. But, you'll have to learn to live with the fact that not everything is going to be factory new on the car and will have to prioritize the items to replace.
For a 100k mile C4S, I wouldn't go much above $20,000. Groovzilla just sold a very nice C4S with similar mileage (about a month ago) and his asking price was $19,500 and that was in Seattle (I think prices tend to be a little higher in the northwest part of the country). Don't get in a hurry and something will pop up.
If you buy it, stop by Kansas City on your way home. Anyone who arrives at the Kansas City Automotive Museum in a 996 gets free admission (museum policy) and I'd be happy to buy you some really good BBQ at the joint down the street.
Thanks for the offer! I am going to call the p-car dealer later today and see if any techs there remember this car. Oh yeah, the car stickered at $93500 which seems a bit low for a well optioned C4S but irrelevant except to get an idea of options. I need to get the option codes off the dealer while I think about it.
Here are some pics from the website:
Ooh, Sangria!
Nice looking car. Love the wheels. Looks like it might have spent some time on the track with that rollbar, even if there aren't other signs of it.
Uh, there's a roll bar in the car. It is a track car.
I would want to have confirmation the RMS, IMSB, and clutch were replaced and when.
Also, even if they were replaced at the mileage you were told this doesn't mean they are still ok.
You have to thoroughly check out the car.
Also, just because of the miles there's no guarantee the water pump has been replaced. The water can last for more than 100K miles.
Same thing goes for the brake hardware. The brakes on my 996 Turbo lasted 120K miles, the water pump about that long too.
However, given the car is a track car I'm pretty sure the brakes have been refreshed and probably more than once.
You want to check to see how much pad and rotor life is left.
I'm not current on used 996 market prices but I'd say give the presence of the roll bar and what have you the car not worth $25K. Is it worth $20K? It depends upon how a thorough used car inspection turns out.
I don’t think a roll bar necessarily means the car was on track (when was the last time you saw a Miata without an aftermarket roll bar that looks stock otherwise), however I would NOT want one that close to my head in a street car. Even a minor accident could turn nasty with a bump of your head into it!
Based on the appearance of the dash and console parts that are not covered with DiNoc (vinyl faux carbon fiber), the interior is in really rough shape, and OP used the DiNoc to cover it up. On one hand, this takes a lot of work for a DIY job; on the other hand, it's the cheap way to address the situation.
So, you've got a car with a roll bar (which I don't think is ridiculous if you care about surviving a roll-over in a Cab) that appears to have a rough interior. The Dension gateway mounted in the front trunk suggests that
AN
owner didn't cheap out on that specific upgrade. I see a disconnect between the Dension and the stick-on vinyl interior - makes me wonder which mods were done by the previous owner, the original owner, and/or some other owner in between.
Did they provide a Carfax report? That would at least give you an idea of where it's been registered and a better idea of how many times it's changed hands. I wouldn't consider the car without the Carfax or other report run against the VIN...it could be a diamond that just needs to be polished in a few spots; it could also be rough. I can't tell from the photos what kind of condition the paint is actually in; nor can I tell if those wheels came black or if they've been plasti-dipped or rattle-canned. The single key is another indication that the previous owner was reluctant to spend money on the car.
The car doesn't give me the warm fuzzies...
Dunno, the only people that would put roll bar in a C4S vert to me would be the ones that were tracking it. It's true I see roll bars on other verts more for style but in this case a roll bar kills the lines IMO. Heck my 76yo dad drives a miata with a chrome roll bar, lol. Also lightweight wheels. I suppose you can always inspect the barrel of the rims for any heavy aggressive brake pad dust. You can also inspect the calipers to see if it looks like original paint and if original paint, to make sure they are not discolored in any way(high track temps will sometime discolor calipers).
What makes me suspicious is that IMS was done only 7k miles ago before the PO decided to get rid of it. Considering the dealership is advertising it at $25k, I gotta wonder how desperate the PO was to get rid of it and how much he got for it(probably teens) and why he was desperate to get rid of it.
$25k isn't outrageous IMO(for a C4S vert which is more rare and generally has a higher resale value) and a fair price from a dealer if they can provide some kind of warranty with it.
Otherwise you don't wanna buy it and even if you got it in the teens, have to replace the motor shortly afterwards.
Well I just got off the phone with Porsche of Omaha. The guy in the shop, Jason, was extremely nice and did remember the car. The last owner had the car about 18 months or so which matches up to the Autocheck MB of Omaha provided. The guy had to move into a SUV due to a new addition in the family. Jason told me it is a clean car, that they used the LNE kit with all Porsche clutch parts. He did not know if the water pump was replaced, but the car is lowered, so springs at least. Got price of $80 for the basic ppi or $400+ for the one I want, the four page CPO review plus a compression check and borescope on the engine. Good price IMHO. Also got a guesstimate of ~$1100 for a new waterpump and coolant refill. So now to talk to the MB dealer and see if they would let the car go for the PPI. I have a vacation coming up early October so it would be a good time for a roadtrip, lol. Additionally Jason did not think the rollbar was track legal and that I might have to put up with some squeaks from the seat rubbing since I am 6'. I asked him that if he was in the market wuold he keep looking or pull the triggger on this 911, but he just said it was a clean, fairly well cared for vehicle.
I have to wonder about a dealer doing the LNE swap too. At least in my area the dealers won't use anything other than OEM parts even outside warranty.
I guess you could get the serial number off the sticker and call LNE to see what they can tell you.
I would not know where to look for the LNE sticker, but apparently Porsche of Omaha uses the LNE kits for RMS and IMSB. Jason also told me that the whole shebang as far as the clutch goes was Porsche OEM parts. Seemed like a straight up guy. While I dislike buying long distance, it's really the only way to find "the" car if you are looking for specifics. I found another C4S cab in speed yellow (me like, lol) but late to the game as he was picking up a new p-car a couple of weeks ago and was going to trade it in. Hopefully still available, but in San Diego and private. I need to trade/sell m E350 Cab to get back into p-cars. Should have kept my 95 I suppose. But that car was feeling dated and these old bones are looking for more comfort these days. Just had rotator cuff surgery and had had other work done in the not so distant past. Getting old isn't fun, LOL.
I think it is hilarious that there are people who think someone did that roll bar install in a car that has rollover protection but the car wasn't tracked, especially since your risk of serious injury in a street accident with that rollbar are much much higher than without.
That's not a good street car. Period.
