Yes - I bought the tires through Costco and they installed them with touchless tire install equipment, filled the tires with nitrogen, and balanced them with a speed balancer.

My local tire shop has installed quite a few sets of new tires I buy from Tire Rack.

They repaired the tire and when I asked, "How much", they said "Nothing".

I do not tip because it's a big shop and there's no way to know in advance (only advance tipping would do any good IMO) who will do the job (and sometimes there are 2 people doing the work to save time) but there's a glass window in the tire changing area where I watch closely what's going on.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ill definitely be putting on some new shoes this spring. My old Pirellis have plenty of tread, but are dry and cracked. Im planning on getting Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
What source & installer do you guys usually go with? Any good deals out there?
Also, any opinions or experiences on adding a road hazard protection plan? Tires on this car arent exactly cheap. A free tire because of a damaged sidewall might be worth the cost of the plan.

I use a local Discount Tire store. Excellent service, and touch less install. Always have balanced with stick on wheel weights inside the tire. For the Porsche, I remove the wheels/old tires in the garage, make an appointment well ahead of time, and then re-install the wheels in my garage. There is a reason for this that I don't want to say. I also stand just outside the garage and watch them like a hawk. But I'm friendly with the guys and they seem to appreciate someone who really cares about the service and the wheels. I tip good too. Michelin Pilot Super Sports on both of my cars.
I used to use Discount Tire, but recently I've started using TireRack and one of their local installers. (Firestone)
I've been extremely happy with TireRack...and Firestone. (multiple cars)
With the Porsche, I delivered the wheels to them and installed them myself.
Take a look at Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.
They're even better that Pilot Super Sports!
I'm running 235/40-R18 & 285/35-R18.
Next time I hope to go 295/35-R18 if they start making it in PS4S.
All of my tire purchases in past 5-10 years have been online thru Tire Rack, except for my truck where I bought tires for it direct from my local Les Schawb dealer.
Most recently purchased 4 new tires for my 2014 Corvettee, 4+2 tires for my BMW 335i and 4+2 tires for my Mercedes ML350 from Tire Rack. No complaints except an extreme delay in deliverying the Corvette tires but usually get tires from them w/in 2-3 days.
I currently take the tires to my local BigO for installation. I do not tip because it's a big shop and there's no way to know in advance (only advance tipping would do any good IMO) who will do the job (and sometimes there are 2 people doing the work to save time) but there's a glass window in the tire changing area where I watch closely what's going on.
No need for new tires for my 996 or MR2 yet but the F250 is due for a full new set that I'll buy from Les Schwab too.
They assign one tech to do the work. Once I see everything is correct I slide the guy a $20...for beer on the way home or lunch money. I'm telling you they appreciate it and it makes me feel good too.
Tipping always helps! I use Tire Rack... My local Firestone won't even do Porsche wheels...
There's a local guy who does mine, but the last time he did them he chipped the clearcoat on the lips
very disappointing... I need new rears in the spring. Hmmmmm not sure who I'll use yet. Last time I checked Tire Rack didn't have Michelin PSS - only PS4S...
No sales tax in DE so i buy local. These guys have the correct machines for low pro tires and they check your wheels for round and staighten before mounting.

Here in northern NJ i use Quality Discount Tire. Great prices, they quote with install and balance included, they use a torque wrench to properly tighten the rims and they are pleasant. They only do tires so they really know what theyre doing.
I go to someone I went to high school with who has a local family owned tire business. Same for insurance. Both people do a good job for both my business and personal vehicles.
i have Tire Rack deliver them to a shop owned by a PCA member
he mounts, balances and does a 4 wheel alignment, never a blemish on the wheel and uses a road force balancer
My 1st automotive job was at NTW which was the best place to buy tires in my experience of working at 5 different tire stores starting in 1985.
Michelin was always the best & most expensive initially, but if you maintain them properly they will last long enough to be the best deal.(Installation cost ain't cheap)
I always try to watch my new tire & wheel spin on the balancer to see if it has excessive movement. If it does, repositioning the tire on the wheel may distribute the weight better.
(It helps to know if your wheels are straight), If you don't, ideally check the balance of the bare wheel on the balancer. If the wheel is more than a ounce out of balance the tire needs to be mounted
with the heavy side opposite the heavy side of the wheel. I'm not a fan of "Road Force" balancers, seems to make tire mounters lazy & improperly trained. P.S. most mechanics know very little about tires.
I used Costco for my wifes Audi SUV.
My car goes to a local independent shop that does road force balancing, which I think is better than regular wheel balancers.
Yeah, if you think you could ruin a tire or wheel due to potholes where you live, go for the protection.
My local tire shop has installed quite a few sets of new tires I buy from Tire Rack. I give them a nice tip.
A few weeks ago my wife ran over a nail. They repaired the tire and when I asked, "How much", they said "Nothing". I gave the guy five bucks.
A week later, another tire puncture. Is she cheating on me with a construction worker? Anyway, another free repair.
Tipping is usually not justified and in most cases doesn't do anything positive for you. But tipping your tire guy, your mail man/person, your bartender, your garbage men/person, and folks like that usually pays off.
Ive learned a lot in one day from this thread and that one. It makes perfect sense to flip the guy a $20 to help make sure my 3-piece HRE wheels stay intact.
Where: Discount Tire
What: Pilot Sport 4S
I ask to be there to help/watch and walk the techs through the proper way to remove/re-install the wheels. They always appreciate the training, and then I give them a decent tip.
On Hunter Road-Force, only way to go. If the numbers are above 15 make them put on a different new tire.
Once you get four tires all under 15 you're good to go...
Edit: oh, and friends don't let friends buy Pirelli's...
Twice now, Ive bought cars with Pirelli sport tires and both times, I was badly disappointed with them. I quickly swapped with something much better.
However! I did buy Pirelli winter tires for my DD, and have been very impressed with those tires. But I do use them for non-performance driving. Just daily winter traction on snowy / icy roads in Minnesota.
Combo of Tire Rack and Discount Tire, I have a local tire shop that will sometimes price match certain tires. My Touareg has Porsche spec 21" Michelin Latitudes that the local shop will price match 100% of the time but can't come close on PS2s or other performance specific tires. Moral of the story, try to give the local guys a chance to match if possible.
+1 for Samaritan Tire. They have mounted tires on my 4Runner, Westy Van, and wifey's MDX. When it's time for tires for the 4S, I'll go w/ them, but will probably just bring in the wheels 'cause I'm **** that way.
They were able to beat Tire Rack pricing on the last set of tires I bought from them for the MDX.
KellyMN - we should meet up sometime!
Ill definitely give them a call when I get my car out of winter storage in the spring!
My 996 is new to me as of November. She and I have been into some quality garage time since then. Im totally up for meeting locals. Say when & where!
I'm considering Costco right now. Bridgestone S-04 pole position in 225 and 285 for ~$945 all in. This includes a $150 promo that I didn't find at Tire Rack, plus I have my $325 Costco reward on the way and will get 2% back. If not this deal I like Continentals for a couple hundred more.
Tried Costco last week for a set of PS3as for wifes 535d. Called, no answer. Went to store, long line, go shopping and come back out somewhat shorter, wait a while to talk to guy. Oh, Michelin is closed come back tomorrow or order online. Online: Not in stock, cant order, go to store. Go to store second time. Wait in line. Yes, Michelin has them. But they are closed and you cant order them now. So you have to come back to order them a 3rd time. After they come in, come back to schedule an appointment. We are about a week or so out on appointments.
Called Discount tire (Americas tire in Cal). Yes, we can get them. Can you match this months Michelin $150 off Costco coupon? Of course. Can I order now on the phone? Of course, just give us a $25 deposit. 2 days later they call, tires are there. Great, can you install them tomorrow? Sure. At the store, no lines wondering if you will catch COVID like Costco. In and out.
Moral of story-F Costco for their utter disrespect for your time.
@jayzbird
im waiting on a set of tires for my X1 and all of the above is consistent w my experience.
Im not driving all that much or in a spirited fashion at the moment so Ill probably go down the same road as you.
I took the wheels off the car myself in my garage. In MN, I prefer not to drive my 911 in the winter. Too much salt & snow quickly leads to rust.
So I brought in four wheels with old tires mounted, and then went home with new tires mounted on the wheels for me to put them all back on the car.
Yes - I bought the tires through Costco and they installed them with touchless tire install equipment, filled the tires with nitrogen, and balanced them with a speed balancer.
Im very pleased with the service and price. For my size tires, I was looking at about $1,250 from tire rack, then would need to hassle with finding a shop to install them, and pay that shop for their work. So total would have been maybe $1,400?
Costco was $1,197 all in, with taxes, mounting, disposal of old tires, etc. Thats a good deal in my book.
Good call. That's how I would want to do it too. I have heard that Costco gets fussy about non-standard tire sizes and won't mount tires if they aren't stock sizes. Did they ask what car you were putting them on?
They did - and I was very upfront about it that I have custom wheels and a non-stock tire size.
The shop manager was very cool about it. He claimed he does all of the performance cars that come through their shop, like Ford GTs, vipers, corvettes, M cars, etc. He also said that he has been on the tire crew at 24-hour races. I trusted him with my HRE wheels at that point.
