I like the clean look so much that I'm saving my pennies for the CSR center exit and a cup rear bumper.

Suggestion
You could cut out a square to fill the hole, heat staple the filler panel and then use a flexible filler(Dolphin glaze for example) to finish the patch.

I'm thinking about a Craigslist bumper to try my skills at filling the holes.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been thinking of removing the rear bumperettes that came with my 996. The car was originally designed without them and I think it provides a cleaner look. Anyone her delete them?
Found this video of someone who did it.

I have thought about it but there is no way im overlaying a plastic faux carbon fiber panel. I give the guy some credit for doing something new but he didnt even know how to drill out a rivet?
most likely i would fiberglass in a patch and repaint
Having a black cab, I don't mind the bumperettes so much and I generally like to keep everything stock (call me boring) but I don't like the flat plastic color. If I had any other color than black I would paint them to match. Still, I may get around to painting mine glossy to match the car's finish. At least if I botch it they are only $30 or so on ebay.
I wonder if you could just drill out the rivets on the support and cut the bumperettes flush with the bumper. I like the clean look so much that I'm saving my pennies for the CSR center exit and a cup rear bumper.
If any of you guys want to rid yourself of the bumpettes, then don't put some silly panel on it. Buy a used European version of the OEM bumper that comes from the factory with a smooth license plate section.
Boom... problem solved!
I recently reached out to Gert about this very thing. I have a factory park assist rear bumper so I’ve wanted to swap it out since day one also eliminating the bumperettes in the process. I find both of these to be pretty atrocious. I also wanted to switch from a mk1 rear bumper to a mk2 as I think it looks way better. I’m still on the fence about doing that as I’d need to replace the tail pipes also. I am making the switch to the euro bumper and it’s not going to be cheap.
-MK2 euro rear bumper - €1228
-tow hook cap - €12
-shipping to NJ - €450
IMO the panel looks worse than the bumperettes. I'm not a fan of the bumperettes either but the euro bumper is not cheap and you'll need to paint it. I'd go the euro bumper route if I ever had to replace the rear bumper.
It's my understanding that the bumpers are the same part# Mk1 -
99650541122 or Mk2 - 99650541124
, but the factory preps the bumpers for ROW or US territories. Now, if you buy them used, you can visibly identify the Euro vs. the US type of course, but my best advice is to contact your Porsche parts center and verify if the bumpers come precut for US territories (i.e. bumpettes).

The part numbers you posted are different from one another. Mk1 and Mk2 rear bumpers are most certainly different versions from one another. The Mk2 sits slightly lower than the Mk1 and the entire lower edge is different. They each require different exhaust tips due to the length.
I reached out to GetPorscheParts about a month ago and they confirmed both Mk1 and Mk2 versions I could order from them would have the cutouts for bumperettes. Ive been searching eBay overseas and I havent yet seen a bumper Id actually spend money on.
Ahh... got it. I have been trying to research the part numbers for the euro versions for a while now. I even reached out to two different UK factory parts suppliers but never heard back from either.
That would be nice! I don't see enough people getting involved to make it worth it though. I think the cost is more than most 996 owners want to spend.
I noticed your bumperettes weren't painted. When these cars first came out BumperPlugs.com was making a fortune selling painted ones.
Good job though!
Have to ding you for laying the carbon fiber on your front fender though.
Gentlemen,
I know it sounds challenging, but all you have to do is get on UK's Ebay site (not the US site) and begin searching for a rear 996 bumper. It didn't take me more than a minute with a simple "Porsche 996 Rear Bumper" search and these are the search findings. Several used rear RoW bumpers that can be repainted.
I have a bumper repair kit for another plastic repair project. Pretty confident I'd be able to do it and I'm going to get some items painted here in the near future... might try it out.
Much ado about nothing. The Euro bumpers are designed for Euro plates. I think the empty space looks obvious. Just put a coat of a rubber gloss product on the bumperettes and they look 100% better.
That's not entirely true, the USDM rear bumper was designed to meet the US 5MPH bumper laws. If there weren't US bumper laws, we wouldn't have bumperettes.
I watched a couple of YouTube videos and it doesn't look like rocket science. I'm thinking about a Craigslist bumper to try my skills at filling the holes. The filler plate in the video is just too ghetto and looks waaay worse than the bumperettes IMHO.
Agreed, the work in the vid isn't the greatest. The bumper repair kit I have uses heated staples to melt into the bumper and mend two sides. You could cut out a square to fill the hole, heat staple the filler panel and then use a flexible filler(Dolphin glaze for example) to finish the patch.
Update to this thread, I contacted Suncoast since they're semi local to me and I purchase things from them often. They gave me an estimate for both the bumper and reinforcement, I'm guessing you could probably use your regular reinforcement if you drill out the rivets for the bumperette mounts. So if you live in the vicinity of Sarasota and want a price, contact Aldo at Suncoast.
