Also, a good opportunity to check all vacuum lines that run in there!

I was putting it off, but if I take the intakes off and replace the corrigated tubing the AOS makes perfect sense.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've been searching around for fuel injector replacement and haven't really come up with anything here. Looked through our FAQ's as well. After learning from Jake Raby this past week keeping the injectors working correctly helps prevent bore scoring, I'd like to tackle this job later in the year. Which leads me to a couple of questions. My hopes are that we can put those ideas here so they can be easily found when someone else searches for Fuel Injector Replacement. Or maybe it's just me.
What are the challenges of replacing the injectors while the engine is in the car?
Genuine Porsche injectors are about $300 US. Bosch injectors (white) are about $30. Is this really the same part?
As always, thanks for any insight you may have. Be encouraged folks!
I just installed the $32 mk2 white injectors in my mk1. U have to create a slot for the mk1 clip but the fit perfectly. Cant help with the install as i have the motor out.
what i can tell u is buy from a reputable place like pelican of fcpeuro. There r countefits out there. The bosch injectors have a verifiabe bar code eventhough they r now made in china.
Agreed on using those two vendors. One of my plans is to replace most parts from FCPEuro because of the lifetime warranty. When I do take the engine out to tackle the IMS I plan on replacing everything again. However, FCP is only selling the Porsche injectors at this time. At $30 a piece it's still cheaper to buy them from Pelican.
The bosch mk2 injectors r hard to find right now. U may have to wait a few months for stock to build again.
These shortages are happening in most industries and its random items.
Charles at LN Engineering sells a kit of all 6 injectors. He is out of stock at the moment, but expects more in Feb. Good price as a kit and sure to get the real thing.
I read in the 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 that the engine should be dropped, but they recommend changing out the injectors with the engine out of the car.
Has anyone had success doing this job in the car? What did you do to drop the engine?
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...at-my-car.html
Yes. I have done this.
Yes, lift the engine with a jack, and loosen the engine mount bolts down about 40mm. Then slowly lower the engine until it is resting on the lowered bolts. For the paranoid, also use a jack stand.
See my thread for the rest. Wear long sleeves. Use lots of lubricant. You know, the usual.
Check Warehouse33.
They're a vendor member here.(or were)
I got 6 Bosch injectors from them a couple of years ago.(I still haven't installed them, but plan to do it with the engine in the car.
Their price back then was the cheapest around.
I was able to confirm with Bosch that they're genuine. (Sealed boxes with serial number hologram)
Kudos to those who do it. Retail can be tough. I only do it with people I know (work). Margins are small and I do it mainly as a courtesy to other businesses because I support them and have access to knowledge and parts they don't.
I have a set of MkII injectors that I was going to modify to fit my MkI fuel rails but decided to just go with MkI injectors instead. If someone needs a set and can't wait for them to be back in stock, I'll sell mine for $150.00 shipped. They are in unopened boxes except for one that I took out for a pic.
I attempted this pig of a job Saturday.
pulled fuel pump fuse, started car twice to clear out the fuel system, pulled gas cap
dropped motor on left side, got the 2 10 mil bolts out of the fuel rail, then manged to drop my socked and extension between block and fuel rail.
1.5 hours later got that out using 2 different endiscope cameras
gave up and put the car back together and went on to clean the radiators.
going to give it another try some other time. had anyone tried accessing from the outside with the rear bumper and exhaust cans off?
yes this sucks trying to do with motor in the car. I wish the prev owner had these replacement when he had the motor out for ims etc in 18
I did this a few months ago. Without mufflers it was not too bad if I recall. Lower engine like said in a previous post. Put jack at the little notch protruding from bottom of engine, remove 2 bolts from engine mounts and then slowly lower til it rest on cross frame. I just leave jack in place and let jack take part of load not all on cross member. Then start pulling the fuel rail and then fuel injectors. I worked from top and bottom. Again, no mufflers on mine so lots easier I am sure.
My plan was to take the mufflers off. Partly because I've only had the car for a year and want to dig in to see what's going on with the engine. No expectation of doing anything quickly and it will probably be apart for some time.
I looked in the engine bay yesterday. It appears that if the secondary air pump comes out it would allow more room. Did anyone attempt it with it in? The motor mounts will be replaced at the same time so it's got to come out regardless.
If my coolant reservoir needed replaced I would take it out as well. Seems like that would give you lot more room. Draining the coolant and removing coolant hoses would also be in my line up if I thought that would help. I'm due for a water pump.
I'm going to tackle several big jobs at once and hopefully it will give me some piece of mind.
If u pull the plenums and intakes u should have plenty of room to change the injectors. U could even pull the risers and put it together out of the car.
How hard is it to remove the intake plenums? I'm doing the secondary air hardware and vacuum at the same time. That would give a lot of space to do all of that.
Thx!
I did it without the dropping the motor any but most loosen the mounts some. There is only one bolt in the back that is hard to get to. I didnt think it was all that difficult but im used to working in cars with tight engine bays. I also have a good assortment of tools.
Get new rubber intake gaskets and lower intake metal gasket if u pull them. They r cheap and available in a couple days.
This. I need to do my AOS (drinking oil at quart per 1000 miles) and will be installing an UAOS when I get to it this spring. Sounds like I'll be adding this job to it and just remove both intake plenums. Judging by the photos it looks like it's a bit of a PITA removing all this + alternator but in the end provides more space to work in. Also, a good opportunity to check all vacuum lines that run in there!
Thanks Bill. It does seem to be "in spec" but with some cars on here not burning any oil or much less I'd like to get to the bottom of it. A manometer test is definitely in order before throwing parts at it. Having said that, when I drive the car, I drive the car...meaning not afraid to shift between 6-7k rpms (once properly warmed up of course), which I'm sure could contribute to some consumption. Maybe I need to try harder and drive it light for a while with shifts below 4k rpm but damn she sounds so good up top! Took a friend for a drive during the weekly 911 exercise day and he couldn't get the grin off his face
Im hoping to get back into the garage and look at whether leaving the exhaust off until the injectors arrive will help over the weekend. Used
Durametric showed up today. Oil sample kit yesterday. Have an extra oil filler cap on the way to mod.
