Reason why I'm asking is I was thinking of using the rest of the Trofeo R tires that came with my new wheels on the streets for this summer since now it's merely a weekend car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Left my house and drove 1/2 mile to the intersection and light was turning yellow so i hurried through it to make a left turn and the back end broke out and it spun a complete 180 degrees and ended up facing the correct way on the other side of the 4 lane highway. But, of course that was after going over the curbed medium. It hit with such force that i'm almost certain it went airborne for a few feet. I cant believe I didnt hit anybody on the other side. Bent two wheels, ripped the front spoiler off and the rear skirts and it dumped antifreeze all over the street. Got the car back to the shop and it appears to be the oil pump housing. Will know more tomorrow. Was just so pissed once i got it secured, I went home. Hoping this can be changed with the engine in the car? I did a search but couldnt find anything on it. Anybody done one of these? Thanks..

POST 2Original post

I'm the last to leave at the green light and the first to stop at the yellow light. And that still won't save us. Back in January I got rear ended just sitting at a red light. Sooner than later it will all be fixed and you'll be back on the road. Anything on the road that might have contributed to the spin?

POST 4Original post

Sorry for you. Temps are in the low/mid 30s in Atlanta tonight. Summer performance tires? Traction Control? Sent from my iPhone using Rennlist

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

^^ more like cold track tires and too much gas pedal pressure.. pretty sure i was accelerating and it came around like a slingshot.. i know better but it is what it is..

POST 6Original post

I'm guessing you accelerated too quick, realized the error, and lifted off the gas part way through the turn. Sucks, but at least is very fixable.

POST 7Original post

Makes me smile when I see posters spouting off about how good these cars are in the snow when I see them lost under dry road conditions. The 996 can go '**** end' first faster than you can blink an eye on any tires and any road condition. Obviously yours was lost by over accelerating and over steering and I am sorry this happened for you. I am still waiting for the honest driver to admit that he lost his in the snow on winter tires. The winter drivers may think twice about driving in the winter after reading your post. Thanks for being so honest. Because of MY WINTER ACCIDENT, I will never take my car out again if snow or ice is on the roads. You will be back up and running and wiser for your mishap.

POST 8Original post

^^ I'm going to go ahead and disagree with you. Anyone can crash at anytime in any condition, mostly due to driver error. I have put plenty of miles on my 996 in the winter, with Blizzaks in snow, ice and -20 degree temps. In three weeks, I am taking my 996 across country to Aspen. I will be putting the Blizzaks back on for the trip, even if highs are in the 50's as I wouldn't be caught dead going through the mountain passes in March on PSS's. I have NO hesitation in using this car in those conditions. To the OP, hopefully you get it sorted and back on the road.

POST 9Original post

Bummer! I thought when I read the title of this thread it was going to be some simple wheel rash! You better give a good check of all the bushings and suspension anchor points as well as tie rods etc. - sounds like you hit pretty hard. Best of luck with the repairs... ^As for Hurdi's post^ I agree with RJH...There's driving and then there's driving. As long as you drive within the parameters dictated by the conditions, you'll be fine. Push the limits and be prepared to face the consequences!

I saw a 2015 Porsche Cayenne lose it on a turn leaving herb chambers. I knew those things were dangerous in the snow! The winter drivers should think twice about driving these things in the winter! I also saw on YouTube all manners of AWD SUV's and trucks completely fishtail and lose it on the road. Those people should think twice about driving period !!!

POST 12Original post

OP: sorry to hear. I was out in Chicagoland last weekend at a local high end car wash in the burbs. There is a guy there with his 991 with summer wheels/tires with his kid getting it washed and it's like 15F outside. Saw one turbo also on the road with summer wheels/tires. I don't know what people think, not to mention there is so much salt on the road, but I guess it's just a car.

POST 13Original post

Regarding winter driving...leaving Keystone last weekend heading back to Denver and saw half a dozen wrecks, mostly vehicles with their rear ends on guard rails. Everyone of them was an SUV. My wife and I figured the drivers were overconfident. Of course, being from AZ/FL I am an expert in the snow! Also sending good wishes to the OP. I did the same thing in my Mustang II King Cobra as a young man. Bent the chassis.

Thinking of Blizzaks myself, read somewhere they took 2nd place in the Black Ice Challenge

OP sorry to hear, but live and learn. It will be back in no time Hurdi you are like the kid in class that failed a test and just wants everyone else to fail so he feels better. These cars are in fact quite good in the snow. I know this and so do many others so give it a rest. Not everyone is so timid

POST 16Original post

rattlsnak: Sorry about your accident. Similar thing happened to me in my 964 about 10 years ago, but didn't suffer any damage. I'm still driving mine through the winter. More surefooted than my wife's Saab 9-7x (camouflaged Trailblazer). I heard that people crash in the spring, summer and fall also. Therefore, these cars apparently should never be driven. There is no safe conditions for them to be driven in. UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED AT ANY TIME OF THE YEAR. Hurdi, you may need to change your username to Ralph N

Classic! Highly approve.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been driving street/track/race 911s for many many years I'm quite aware of how they handle. If I was on street tires, this would not have happened but like I said, it is what it is. So, back to the original question,. anybody replaced the oil pump housing before? I got everything apart today up to the engine cross mount.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 12076976

Damn, what track tires? You use track tires on your DD? Reason why I'm asking is I was thinking of using the rest of the Trofeo R tires that came with my new wheels on the streets for this summer since now it's merely a weekend car. Now having second thoughts...

POST 21Original post

hopefully you'll get it on the road sooon..... hurdi..i'm in your neck of the woods....turnpike to reading.....driven my c2 all year long and my awd all year long also. It's really a combo of tires(snow tires snow tires snow tires)...your driving skills(never full throttle...slow in ...slow out)....and others around you. Yes ive slip and slid but never fully lost it(more than 45 degrees sideways)

POST 22Original post

I would just pull the engine/trans and then replace it or maybe a partial drop. I would also lock it at TDC and lock the cams then pull the tensioner on this end. Be careful pulling the console off. Part of it is the plain bearing end of the IMS shaft. So you turn it left and right and pull straight back.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for those tips. I do have all the cam locking tools here at the shop and I'm going to do more research on it, but it is fully accessible with the cross mount taken off the back.

POST 24 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok, that was a major PITA... You were absolutely correct. Had to lock the cams and loosen the tensioner, which of course entails removing the power steering reservoir and the AC compressor to get access but easily done with the engine in the car. Nice to be back on the road!

POST 25Original post

^Awesome^ ! Any more photo's ? A little illustrated write-up would be nice Glad to hear you got her back on the road

POST 26Original post

[B]sorry to hear about that. For the life of me I can't get my rear end to spin the slightest bit. It is a wide body with 295's and, goes around my favorite corner, 90 degrees @ 60 mph the same as 20 mph. Feels like it grabs almost more with speed. As far as curbs go, I am the worst. As careful as I try to be, there are a lot of chips and scrapes on my tires from parking!!!

POST 27Original post

Ling, are you driving a C4S? Oversteer with AWD is tamed - to a point. Instead of giving up progressively, the AWD 996's hold, hold, and then give it all up at once...and since it never happens, it's hard to be ready for it. One of the reasons I chucked my FWD components...

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 12115755, 12115784

I have 295s on the rear also. When they are hot, they are like gumballs.. ! As far as a write up.. Not too good at those.. only took a few pics.. but see below.. Oil pump housing (or water housing) replacement: drain coolant (in my case, my coolant drained itself all over the highway.. lol. ) drain oil remove air box assembly remove serpentine belt remove rear bumper remove bumper rebar remove mufflers remove all heat shields remove cats support engine and remove rear engine mount bolts remove rear engine carrier mount lock crank at TDC lock cams remove a/c compressor (you can leave the hoses connected, just slide it rearward out of the way) remove upper chain tensioner remove bolts holding housing and slide off rearward install new gaskets and reinstall all of the above! The whole job took a solid 7-8 hours from start to finish.

POST 30Original post

that sucks Didn't come that close, but the rear wiggled at me going into third the other week, they really don't like cold and slippery - which can make them fun when it's cold and slippery...
