Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

996.2 C2 2002 tip, 43k miles. I know it's normal to have white smoke occasionally on cold starts. But I have something different: 1. Race the car in 'pedal to the metal' mode for half an hour at night 2. Park the car 3. Start the car the next morning Result: tons of white smoke out of both mufflers and then blue smoke out the right muffler. Right muffler smoke stops in couple of minutes. No ticking or knocking noise, no smoke if you don't race the car before parking it (I've seen just a little bit of white smoke couple of times, which is nornormal). Should I worry about something?

How old is your AOS? Have you ever tested or had it tested?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Only a simple test: when the engine is running, oil cap can be removed and I feel reasonable vacuum. Original AOS

POST 4Original post

This is what I have experienced at the track when running oil at top mark (full). AOS tested perfect at 5 H2O. When I run oil at midlevel, this almost never happens. In fairness, I also make an effort to do a nice easy cool down lap, keeping revs down below 4000 rpm. My idea (right or wrong), is to give the engine time to burn off that oil mist from the AOS before it gets time to condense and pool in intake.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 16567833

thats not telling u anything. When the aos failes u get more vacuum then the 5 in its suppose to be. May not be an issue but worth testing. I thought mine was fine too but read over 12 on the meter.

My brand new AOS failed 6 months (2000 miles) after installation...Get a manometer on and test!

POST 7Original post

Lots of posts on this topic - do a search. May be AOS going bad, maybe not, get it checked. After driving it hard (like at a DE, not racing at night ), try letting it idle for a few minutes before shutting it off. My '02 Tip will do the same thing on a cold start if I don't do this. Set your oil level about halfway between the low dot and full dot on the dipstick.

You need to do an accurate test of the AOS. We had a member on here not long ago that his AOS when first started was reading 52inH2o, then would slowly come down to a normal reading of 5inH20 after in about 20 seconds indicating a delay in function. Also since you have an 02, that is the year for the dipstick revision. If your engine is before 662 11795 it has the 9.3 quart dipstick and should be ran at half way between min and max. IF you have an engine after 662 11795 you have a 8.7 quart dipstick, do NOT run at half way between min and max without a deep sump oil pan. More info below, this was just brought up yesterday and discussed. I didn't spend too much time looking for my paper material and since I'm retired I don't have electronic access to the Porsche After Sales site, but I remember the "need to know" stuff. Here it is.. Pic 1 is the 9.3 quart dipstick, pic 2 is the 8.7 quart dipstick, identified by the "ears" on the stick. The 8.7 quart dipstick was a running change installed from engine number 662 11795 on to help with smoking on high G-force turns at the track. IF an newer engine was installed that had the newer dipstick, the instrument cluster was to be re-programed/re-calibrated to use the 8.7 quart dipstick instead of the 9.3 quart dipstick. If you are running the 8.7 dipstick AND setting the level at HALF full, you are running at about 1 quart low from the original design !!! ( a deeper sump is a must in this situation).. 9.3 quart dipstick 8.7 quart dipstick ( has the "ears" on it ) Also just to mention that my invention of the UAOS is a much better design and captures the excess oil to stop smoking and the risk of hydrolock and will warn of oil accumulation if it exceeds 117cc..

Many engines have been known to "blow up" when night racing... Be careful out there!

WAIT what? all i've been reading is to keep the oil level at 1/2 mark in the stick/dash gauge my car is an 03 with the later dip stick - the dash gauge and the dip stick reading are the same am i running the oil level too low now?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16569570

A little low is better that to high. Anywhere between the dots and your safe.

Unfortunately info that gets passed around on the internet losses its accuracy. Ever played the game where 8-10 people sit in a circle and whisper a phrase to the person on their right? When the phrase gets back to the originator it has usually changed considerably !!! Yes, you are running the level too low unless you have a deeper than stock sump !!! The early cars had issues with smoking on high G-force on corners on track. Porsche was aware of this and revised the dipstick to LOWER the oil level by 1/2 quart using the updated dipstick and re calibrated dash. Lowering it further is asking for trouble !! When so many people keep repeating the same bad info, it is impossible to correct it !!!

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
