Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Owner had never heard of bore scoring and told us it was the belt rotating.
Leading evidence: 'belt rotating' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'belt rotating' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair typically just became much more expensive' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
Problem with running it till it dies and then repairing is the repair typically just became much more expensive.

I have heard that not everything that ticks is bore scoring and then there is the theory that says change your oil often and drive it till it dies and then sell as a roller or do a rebuild at that stage

Suggestion
Buying it, using heavier oil, and waiting for the inevitable engine death is absolutely an option, just not a smart one in my opinion.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It sounds like a ticking to me but I am still not sure about what are correct Porsche engine sounds
Looking at a 996 with a friend. These are recordings from below the engine below the oil reservoir.

Thanks

Unfortunately we left already so likely not able to get it today.
Due to distancing we could not take it for a ride but I guess we will move on.
It was a nice car though 2003 75K miles and very well taken care of.

Buddy got hooked with my 996 and he is on a quest. I wanted to sell him my Targa but he does not want a Targa. I love my Targa but am yearning for a 997.2. Kind of hard to shop for cars during Covid
Thanks all
There are any number of videos out there with cars with obvious signs of bore scoring. If the worst is confirmed, then a rebuild is 5 figures. Then there's also the "while you're in there" costs.
There's no such things as a cheap Porsche.
Is there any other explanation for that sound.

He is only looking for 14K for the car and I am wondering if it is not bore scoring whether it might make a killer deal.
Just trying to play the devils advocate
A well-kept 996 with 75K miles for $14K? The seller is fully aware of the engine issues.
I have never heard of a "killer deal" when it comes to a 996 making weird engine noises. It's dying and will require $.
Buying it, using heavier oil, and waiting for the inevitable engine death is absolutely an option, just not a smart one in my opinion. Hadnt heard the its just the belt explanation before, its usually its just a lifter.
The explanation I've heard the due to the wear surface on the piston being compromised the piston "rocks" twice at the bottom of the stroke making the easily identifiable "ticking" sound. As wear continues the ticking gets louder and almost sounds like a rod knock. Ends up looking like this...ask me how I know...
